July 9, 2008: Corzine To Taxpayers: Drop Dead!

Governor signs $3.9 billion borrowing bill without voter approval. Assemblyman Richard Merkt today said Governor Corzine’s decision to sign legislation authorizing $3.9 billion in non-voter approved bonding for school construction projects is an insult to New Jersey taxpayers to whom he promised in January to put a stop to state borrowing without voter approval.

“The Governor looked New Jersey voters in the eye and told them that he was committed to ending non-voter approved debt, only to sign-off this morning on a massive $3.9 billion borrowing program,” said Merkt, R-Morris. “This is a program that will spend $1.5 billion more than that which was ordered by the Supreme Court, with no safeguards for how the money will be spent, and it is being done without voter approval.”

In his State of the State speech on January 8th Governor Corzine proposed a constitutional amendment requiring voter approval for all debt. The Governor stated that, “It is up to those of us in this room to change the ‘credit card’ culture of New Jersey’s finances,” and that, “The public must be put back in charge of the State’s credit card. Borrowing must be done sparingly.” Merkt noted that the Supreme Court had only ordered the state to fund another $2.5 billion in school construction costs, but somehow Trenton has allowed the borrowing to balloon to $3.9 billion – which will total more than $7 billion once the debt service is calculated.

“There was no reason why this borrowing could not have been placed before the voters,” Merkt said. “The Governor’s action today is a slap in the face to the state’s voters and it will only deepen the quicksand into which our state’s fiscal stability is sinking.”

July 9, 2008: Governor Signs Legislation to Borrow $3.9 Billion For School Projects

Governor Jon S. Corzine today signed legislation, bill (S1457/A2873), that provides $3.9 billion in state borrowing to replace or rebuild dozens of substandard schools across the state.

“Today, we fulfill an important obligation to our children by making a down payment on the future of their education,” Governor Corzine said. “Every student deserves to attend school in a safe and healthy building. This legislation recognizes that there are needs in both the SDA districts and in the suburban and rural districts.”

The legislation designates $2.9 billion for Abbott districts and $1 billion for other districts. school facilities projects. $50 million has also been directed toward county vocational school projects.

The new legislation calls for the Education Commissioner to institute a process that prioritizes financing for school facilities projects in those districts and to set-up a process for the annual allocation of school facilities project grant funding available to them.

The bill was sponsored in the Senate by Senators Ronald L. Rice (D-Essex) and Shirley K. Turner (D-Mercer). Assembly sponsors were Albert Coutinho (D–Essex and Union), Grace L. Spencer (D-Essex and Union), Nellie Pou (D-Bergen and Passaic), Elease Evans (D-Passaic), Mila M. Jasey (D-Essex ), Cleopatra G. Tucker (D-Essex ) and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Mercer).

July 9, 2008: Save Muhlenberg Hospital Rally Friday July 11; Randolph Road And Park Avenue.

Keep Up The Pressure! All Is Not Lost! Don't Give Up! Demand That Muhlenberg Remain Open As a Full Service Hospital

There was a great article in the Washington Post this week, Muhlenberg is attracting national attention.

Daniel Schorr's commentary on All Things Considered this evening picked up the Washington Post story and lamented the shutdown of Muhlenberg. We are really starting to increase the level of media attention to this issue. Now is not the time to give up the fight but rather to increase public pressure.

Here is the link to Schorr's commentary: Health Care Faces Funding Woes : NPR www.npr.org/temp lates/story/story.php?storyId=92342728andsc=emaf

News from Dottie Gutenkauf
1--Thursday, July 10, 8:30 am to 5 pm, State Health Planning Board meeting on applications for elective angioplasty without surgical backup facilities applications, including one from JFK. Several hospitals including Muhlenberg but NOT including JFK were chosen several years ago to participate in a federally-funded study of the effectiveness of this procedure -- Muhlenberg came out tops in NJ and among the top nationwide. Some specialized cardiac hospitals sued to prevent the study--the judge ruled that the hospitals in the study could proceed but that all hospitals wanting to do this procedure, including the ones in the study, would have to apply to DHSS. They all did--including Muhlenberg--in mid- December.

March 3, Solaris pulled Muhlenberg's application--just a couple of days after filing the application to close Muhlenberg. THIS IS A BIGGIE BECAUSE this procedure is income-generating. For more info, contact your cardiologist, Dr Blumberg.
A number of us Save Muhlenberg Coalition folks are going to testify. It's at the Westin in Forrestal Village off Route 1 south near Princeton. Yes, of course I'll be there!

Friday, July 11, 5:30 pm, Park Avenue and Randolph Road--another POP/Save Muhlenberg rally (there will be people there to interview).

Monday July 14--following the usual Monday evening POP/Save Muhlenberg Coalition meeting (6:30 pm at the duCret School of Art, 1030 Central Avenue in Plainfield) we are going to go to the City Council agenda-fixing session (7:30 pm in the City Hall Library). We expect to have a bit of a crowd--hope you can come!

St. Anne’s Boy Scout Troop 75, together with the Garwood Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, the Garwood Knights of Columbus, the Garwood Post Office and others will be conducting the third annual Community-wide Food Drive on Saturday, May 17. Residents are asked to look for flyers in their mailbox from the Post Office that will advise them to either put their food out on their stoop for pickup or bring it to the Knights Hall off of Willow Avenue between 9:00 AM and noon. The past two years have been great successes and we look forward to continuing the tradition! We have been able to help a good number of Garwood and non-Garwood residents in need in these tough economic times with constantly rising food prices. This drive is of particular importance because most drives take place at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and food supplies for those in need are now low. Please contact Bill Nierstedt at (908) 654-8586 if you need any assistance or have any questions. We thank you for your support.

April 28, 2008: Springfield Township Issues
Hello Everyone,

I am writing this newsletter a few weeks early because there are some very important meetings coming up and I will not be around in two weeks to get this letter out.

Compost Problem In The Quarry

We have had many complaints regarding the foul smell in the Quarry coming from the compost facility. We have scheduled a meeting with Reliable Wood Products, who runs the facility, to explain what they are doing about this problem and to assure the residents of Springfield how they plan on containing the odor. Questions will be answered.
The meeting will take place on MAY 27, 2007 at the Township Committee Meeting in Town Hall at 8 PM.

Budget Meeting Open To The Public

We are opening up the Budget Process to the public. Any resident of Springfield may come and ask any questions relating to the upcoming 2008 Budget during our next
Township Committee Meeting on May 13, 2008 at 8 PM at Town Hall.
We will have all Department Heads at this meeting to answer your questions. We hope this will bring to the forefront any of your concerns and ideas that you think can help us with the budgetary problems that plague the community.

Special Meeting Of The Township Committee

The Township Committee has added a Special meeting on May 19, 2008 so that we may discuss and try to finalize the Budget for 2008 to be introduced on May 27, 2008.
This meeting will be posted in the Observer.

Downtown Redevelopment

We are trying to get the major of property owners of the designated Downtown Redevelopment Study to attend a Township Committee Meeting either on May 12, 2008 or June 19, 2008 to discuss how we can move forward with this project. It is the consensus of the majority of the TC to move ahead in this fashion.

April 25, 2008: Westfield Community Action Group

I would like to thank everyone who attended the meeting on Tuesday and voiced their concerns regarding the downtown and specifically, the parking situation. It was a very inspirational meeting with over 80 merchants and property owners in attendance. For those of you who missed it, I would like to give you a recap of the evening.

Everyone who spoke had a horror story about parking and the aggressive enforcement of it and all were in agreement that the walking traffic in town was down substantially. Along with that, the storeowners on Prospect Street spoke of the street being closed off and on for six months with virtually no help from the downtown organizations. All felt the need for an organization to address downtown issues – an organization that includes everyone (merchants, downtown property owners and residents). We all have a stake in preserving the “specialness” of Westfield.

We are in the process of creating the Westfield Community Action Group. This entity will be totally funded with however much people feel that they can give. There is no minimum to be a member. We only ask people to give what they can. But we will be a voice for all. The parking situation is what brought everyone together. However, I see this group as the advocate for anything pertaining to our downtown.

Everyone was very enthusiastic and realized that the time for action is now which is why I am writing to you today.

We Need Your Commitment For The Next Two (2) Tuesdays.

·4/29/08 – Place – Jersey Mike’s – 6 p.m. – The agenda will include short-term and long-term goals for the group, delegating responsibilities to maximize our efforts, and discussing the upcoming Town Council meeting.

·5/6/08 – Place – Town Council Meeting – 8 p.m.
This is a very important meeting. As Mike Blancato and Tim Harrington said at our meeting, if we want to implement change quickly, we need to show up in numbers – to show them we are a force to be heard. We cannot let the town continue using our downtown as the go-to piggy bank. They are chasing our customers away. We need to let them know that we’re mad as heck and we won’t take it anymore!
From the comments made at our first meeting, everyone realizes the significance of immediate action. We are the backbone of this community and we need to be heard. Please don’t leave the commitment to your neighbor. We Need Everyone! The time to be involved is now.

April 25, 2008: A Tribute To The Greatest Generation
War Requiem-Benjamin Britten
A Concert to Honor America's Heros

May 3, 2008, 8 pm
Presbyterian Church, Westfield, NJ

Westfield Symphony Margaret Cusack, Soprano, Scott Murphree, Tenor, Peter Castaldi, Baritone Princeton Pro Arte Chorale, Westfield Intermediate School Youth Choir

For tickets call 908-232-9400,

wso@westfieldsymphony.org or purchase tickets at Town Books in Westfield or Martin Jewelers in Cranford. Tickets $25-65.

When the histories of the troubled last 100 years are written in ages to come, there is reason to believe that the War Requiem by Benjamin Britten will be ranked among its finest treasures, an unparalleled expression of artistic sorrow and cathartic reconciliation. The technical difficulty and grand scale of this work has deterred all but the most professional and committed performing arts organizations, and yet its noble message of abhorrence of destruction, and ultimate reconciliation could not be more appropriate than at this moment in time. This performance represents New Jersey’s most significant, cultural commemoration of veterans who have either made the ultimate sacrifice, or who have served, or presently serve, their country. The WSO plans for military representatives and a commemorative ceremony, reaching out to local, as well as statewide, veterans associations.

Don't Miss This Concert-The First Performance of the War Requiem ever in Union County.
