September 28, 2008: Bailout - for my Westfield friends who might be thinking of voting democratic this election, check this first. Just the facts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5tZc8oH--o
12:38 September 28, 2008
September 28, 2008: Bailout – Much of the blogosphere is up in arms because of the provision in Senator Dodd’s financial bailout bill that might funnel profits from the bailout plan to ACORN Housing (related to the disreputable activist group ACORN), and other more reputable service organizations. I have read Dodd’s proposed statute and in some respects, it is far worse than has been reported. Senator Dodd has placed a loophole in the bill that is explicitly designed to siphon off tens or hundreds of billions of dollars to the Housing Trust Fund and the Capital Magnet Fund even if there are no net profits in the $700 billion venture. You know, it would be easier for me to believe this was a crisis, if the people in charge were acting like it was a crisis, instead of just an opportunity for graft. Then again, to some of these people, everything is just an opportunity for graft. It's no wonder the Republicans are dragging their feet on this bail-out b#5*!t. But it's also no wonder the Democrats want some cover by the Republicans. Michael Ferrante Weehawken

September 28, 2008: Bailout vs. bankruptcy? Bankruptcy is the preferred option here. In any other industry when an institution is over-leveraged, the firm declares bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is a systematic and rational system for re-allocating resources and clawing back ill-gotten gains. But in a bankruptcy, the judge can treat executive compensation like other debtors, which we all know has been a major stumbling block for the $100 million CEOs advocating bailout (over bankruptcy) in this current disgrace. In all news coverage the tag line is there is not enough time to prepare for bankruptcy - we need to act NOW to the tune of $700 billion or so. What is the rush? Why are the banks so different from all other distressed institutions? Could it be that investment banks historically are major contributors to political parties. Are they merely using their political power to socialize these massive losses on the rest of society - especially under the guidance of a Republican administration? A few well-placed bankruptcies in this current morass would encourage future CEO’s to not over-leverage their firms in the first place. The markets would put a renewed premium on solid balance sheets. Jeffrey Miron, a Harvard University professor, observes this government intervention is without comparison and precedent. He advocates allowing the normal process of business failure and bankruptcy to run its course. “It’s just nothing like the calamity the administration is making it out to be,” he said. Most financial cons require the mark not knowing who took him/her. This time we know who the perps are. And the American taxpayer once again continues to be the mark. Richard Green Lambertville, New Jersey (609-397-8236)

September 19, 2008: Republicans pick Gaglione to challenge Quijano Union County Republicans have chosen Union Township Board of Education President Linda Gaglione to challenge Assemblywoman Annette Quijano in the 20th Legislative Direct. Gaglione unsuccessfully challenged State Sen. Ray Lesniak last year, getting 4,478 votes to Lesniak’s 9,760. She was unanimously chosen to challenge Quijano at a county committee meeting on Tuesday night in Kenilworth. Quijano was recently sworn into office after being narrowly chosen by the Union County Democratic Committee last month to replace Assemblyman Neil Cohen, who resigned after child pornography was allegedly found on his legislative office computer. Cohen remains in an undisclosed mental health facility, according to sources. Charges have still not been filed against him. Democrats have a large registration advantage in the legislative district, which is dominated by the City of Elizabeth and includes the towns of Union, Kenilworth and Roselle. The District historically has the lowest voter turnout in the state. Gaglione could not be reached for comment. Union County Republican Chairman Phil Morin said that if the stars line up just right, Gaglione could have a shot at winning. “I think she brings good experience, having run before for a legislative level office, and having the experience working on the school board for several years,” he said. “If we catch the right waves, we can be successful… I think realistically a lot of what happens below the ticket in that district will depend on what happens on the top of the ticket in the president and Senate race

September 16, 2008: Trust Fund Is Established To Benefit Wil Kehler WESTFIELD – A trust fund is being established to accept donations on behalf of five-year-old Wil Kehler and his family. Wil, one of Doug and Lane Kehler’s triplet children, has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his left femur. Osteosarcoma is a rare and malignant form of bone cancer. Wil is the grandson of Jeri Priscoe, Alice Kehler and the late Gary Kehler. He must undergo 30 weeks of treatment, including 19 weeks of chemotherapy at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. After three months of chemo, Wil will undergo limb-salvage surgery, at best, or above-knee amputation, at worst, to repair his leg after removal of the tumor. Either option will result in intensive physical rehabilitation and future surgeries to account for Wil’s growth. While Wil’s sarcoma team at MSKCC offers a good prognosis, the road to get there will be long and difficult. Wil’s mother currently is out of work caring for her son. His father will continue teaching at Westfield High School, although leaving coaching and tutoring to others. Their friends and family hope to raise funds to provide financial support in areas that insurance and family reserves cannot adequately cover. Although contributions will not be tax-deductible, all the funds will be used to help the family. Contributions may be made to the Wil Kehler Fund and sent to: P. Jeffrey Christakos, Westfield Wealth Management, LLC, 415 South Avenue, West, Westfield, N.J. 07090. Whatever your concern, someone has dealt with it before.” Volunteers are also needed to help with short-term projects at the community level, such as fun events, badge workshops and cookie sales. Girl Scouts are always looking for guest speakers, ranging from senior citizens who can share their life experiences, to executives who can share their business sense, to homemakers who can share their skills. September 3, 2008: Musicfest To Be Held Rain Or Shine This Weekend At Nomahegan Park In Cranford
CRANFORD -- With an ever changing forecast showing possible rain for this weekend, preparations have been made to ensure that Union County MusicFest will continue to be held on Friday, Sept. 5th and Saturday, Sept. 6th at Nomahegan Park in Cranford, County officials announced today.
Stages have been made weather-proof, and artists are prepared to perform, and the public should be prepared to bring any rain gear needed in the event of rain. County groundskeepers are also making the necessary preparations for any rain, including materials that would help keep the soil and grass traversable following inclement weather.
According to today’s accuweather forecast, Hanna is expected to push up the East Coast with high pressure over the western Atlantic steering the system. By Saturday, Hanna may weaken to a tropical storm after moving over land Friday night, but may bring rain into the mid-Atlantic and along the Eastern Seaboard this weekend.
“We are continuing to monitor the weather pattern for Union County,” said Christopher Scaturo, the Deputy Director of the Union County Office of Emergency Management. “While there is still a bit of uncertainty about the track of the storm, concert-goers should be prepared to bring umbrellas and ponchos.”
For more information on the concert, go to www.ucmusicfest.com.
