September 3, 2003 UNION COUNTY WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION DRILL
COUNTY – On Saturday, September 6, police, firefighters and EMTs will test their ability to respond to a potential attack using weapons of mass destruction. A drill by Union County’s Office of Emergency Management will involve law enforcement and emergency responders from all of the county’s 21 towns, all county hospitals, health care providers and county and state officials. The drill will also involve as many as 60 community volunteers, many of whom will be patients and victims.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. and will last about four hours. It will begin at Union Train Station, Morris Avenue and Green Lane, Union. Then it will move to the Westfield Train Station, South Avenue, Westfield.
WESTFIELD – Please be advised that on Saturday, September 6, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 12 noon, the Union Country Office of Emergency Management and Town of Westfield, in conjunction with other local, State and Federal agencies and local hospitals, will be conducting a mock emergency disaster exercise at the Westfield Train Station. During the course of the exercise emergency response personnel, equipment, and vehicles will be in the immediate vicinity of the Westfield Train Station on the North Avenue side.
The drill is intended to test our response capabilities. There is no need to become alarmed. This is a mock emergency disaster exercise to evaluate our preparedness. You should feel free to go about your daily routine.
We wish to make this drill as realistic as possible; however, in order to do so it will necessitate a simulated evacuation. At some point in time during the exercise, emergency response personnel may distribute a flyer to your home or business declaring it "evacuated". You will not be required to leave your home or business. This is for demonstration purposes only.
It is important that you do not call the main police communications center if you have any questions or concerns regarding the mock emergency disaster exercise. Kindly direct all your calls to Deputy Chief Duelks at the Westfield Fire Department (908) 789-4131.
