Eighteen Will be Confirmed May 31 at Temple Emanu- El

Eighteen 10th graders will be confirmed by Temple Emanu- El of Westfield at a special service on Sunday, May 31, at 10 a. m.

The service will include the reading of student essays, poetry and prayers about God, Torah and Israel.

Those being confirmed receive certificates in recognition of this milestone in their religious education, a temple spokeswoman indicated.

During the past year, students have studied the Jewish historical experience, Jewish philosophy and theology, the Holocaust, Talmud, Midrash, decision making from a Jewish perspective and current events.

In addition, those being confirmed participated in the L'Taken Seminar at the Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism in Washington, D. C.

Madrigal Singers Set Anniversary Concert For Sunday, May 31

The Madrigal Singers will present a 50th anniversary concert of Renaissance song and verse at the First Baptist Church of Westfield, 170 Elm Street, on Sunday, May 31, at 4 p. m.

Founded by the late Louise Rogers Goucher of Short Hills with a group of friends, the Madrigal Singers have been presenting programs of music and readings since 1948. The ensemble's performances include seasonal sacred and secular themes.

Area singers scheduled to perform in the upcoming concert include Barbara Shopiro and Alene Stout of Westfield, Margaret Gooding and Kirk Robbins of Fanwood, and Margaret Thompson of Mountainside.

'Parenting and Internet' Topic of Special Program

A special program, "Parenting and the Internet," will be held Sunday, May 31, at First United Methodist Church.

Esther Cohen, a teacher, parent and member of Park United Methodist Church in Bloomfield, will be the guest facilitator. The program will be held at 9: 45 a. m. in the Social Hall.

Ms. Cohen will lead the group in a discussion of the positive opportunities and the areas of caution parents need to consider as their children explore the Internet. The public is invited to attend.

Wesley Hall Nursery To Hold Graduation

The Wesley Hall Nursery School will hold its annual graduation ceremony tomorrow, Friday, May 29. The ceremony will be held at 7 p. m. in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church in Westfield.

One hundred and twenty children who will be entering kindergarten next year will participate in singing performances and graduation. Refreshments will be served on the lawn following the service.

Evangel Church Plans Program June 7 to 9 On 'Heaven and Hell'

The Evangel Church on Terrill Road in Scotch Plains will present "Heaven's Gates and Hell's Flames" from Sunday, June 7, through Tuesday, June 9, at 7: 30 p. m.

The presentation features a cast of 50 accompanied by dramatic sound and light effects, according to the Reverend Kevin M. Brennan, Pastor.

Due to the mature content of the performance, there will be children's services with Captain Steve and Sue the Crew for ages 3 to 7 years old. A nursery with closed captioned television is also available.

Admission is free although offerings will be accepted to help with the cost of the program. Attendees are urged to come early for choice seats. For further information, please call (908) 322- 9300.

First Baptist Women To Attend Conference

The American Baptist Women of the First Baptist Church of Westfield, 170 Elm Street, will attend the state organization's annual conference at Harvey Cedars Bible Conference Center in Long Beach Island from Thursday through Saturday, June 11 to 13.

The conference, entitled "Soaring to New Heights," will offer Bible study, special music, a missionary speaker from Costa Rica and workshops.

The Reverend Caroline Cargo of Westfield and Donna Beardsley of Piscataway are among those leading the workshops.

Anne Lowe of Mountainside is Conference Chairwoman and Jean Kellogg of Scotch Plains is Conference Registrar.

Interfaith Singles Set June Meeting Schedule

Interfaith Singles, a friendly and supportive group for single adults over 45, has announced its meeting schedule for June.

The group meets weekly for discussion on successful single living. Continental breakfast is available for a $2 donation.

The meetings take place at the First Baptist Church, 170 Elm Street in Westfield, from 9 to 10: 30 a. m. They will be held on Sundays, June 7, 14, 21 and 28.

Choral Concert Slated At Holy Trinity Church

The Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, located at Westfield Avenue and First Street in Westfield, has invited the public to a choral concert on Saturday, June 6, at 8 p. m. in the church.

The concert, featuring the Holy Trinity Choir, soloists, and instrumental ensemble, is being presented as part of the parish's 125th anniversary celebration.

It will include the Gloria (RV 589) by Antonio Vivaldi; the Missa (K. 259, Organ Solo Mass) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the "Te Deum" by Robert Hobby.

The "Te Deum" was commissioned by the parish for the 125th anniversary celebration in October of 1997, and will be presented with a special orchestration prepared by the composer for this concert.

Additional works by Flor Peeters, Heinrich Schütz, and Mozart will also be included. The program is being presented free of charge.

SPIRITUAL MILESTONE… Lisa Roxanne Harris, the daughter of Lawrence and Thelma Harris of Scotch Plains, will be ordained as an American Baptist clergywoman on Sunday, May 31, during a 5 p. m. service at St. Paul Baptist Church in Montclair. A 1988 graduate of Scotch PlainsFanwood High School, she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Rutgers University in 1992. She received her Master of Divinity Degree from the Duke University School of Divinity in 1997. Ms. Harris is presently serving as Ministry Resource Associate on the staff of the Hinton Rural Life Center, a mission agency in Hayesville, North Carolina serving small congregations and rural communities in nine southeastern states. Music Club Scholarships

Awarded to Fourteen Students

The Musical Club of Westfield recently announced its Scholarship Awards for the 1998- 1999 school year. Committee Chairwomen Sondra Tammam and Helene Frieland announced that 14 students won $14,750 in music scholarships, with four firsttime winners and 10 returning recipients. High school seniors and college students majoring in music compete for the awards based on talent, academic standing and financial need.

The four new scholars are W. Alan Brown, Jennifer Kanarek, Benjamin Schwartz and Benjamin Siegel.

W. Alan Brown, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Brown of Metuchen, is

a senior at Blair A c a d emy. He will major in v o i c e and music education at J o h n s Hopkins Peabody Conservatory.

Alan received the Joseph F. Eberle Memorial for Achievement in Music. Last year, he attended the New Jersey Governors' School for the Arts.

Jennifer Kanarek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Kanarek of Scotch Plains, will be a voice major at

Brandeis University. She is a Scotch PlainsFanwood

Benjamin Siegel, son of Mrs. Ronnie Siegel, is the student conductor of the Westfield High School Jazz Band. He will attend Indiana University as a

Memorial Scholarship. The following are returning Scholarship recipients. Paul Bhasin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kevel Bhasin of Westfield, is a senior trumpet performance major at the University of Michigan. He will study at the Aspen School of Music this summer. Paul won the 1998 Yamaha Young Performing Artists Award and was the special guest performer at the Musical Club award ceremony. He received the Mary Williams Belcher Memorial Scholarship.

John Brzozowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Brzozowski of Scotch Plains, is a music education junior at James Madison University. He received the Anthony H. Gleason Memorial Scholarship. John performs in many musical groups.

Cormac Egenton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Egenton, is a Scotch Plains- Fanwood High School graduate. He is a sophomore in viola performance at Vanderbilt University. Brad Gillet, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Gillet of Scotch Plains, is a trumpet performance and music education sophomore at the University of Miami in Florida.

David Heilman, son of Mrs. John Heilman of Fanwood, will be a junior at Jersey City State College where he studies jazz performance and music education. David recently played with the Jersey City State Big Band at the Music Educators' National Convention. Kevin Hildebrandt, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hildebrandt, is a Westfield High School graduate and a junior at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts majoring in jazz and concert guitar.

Christina Martos, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Antonio Martos, will be a junior at Carnegie Mellon University College of Fine Arts as a voice major. She is a member of the school's concert choir. Christina received the Janet Grimler Gleason Memorial Scholarship. Rachel Mendez, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Mendez of Warren, will be a sophomore at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts, where she is majoring in flute performance and music education. Rachel also plays the bagpipes and sings with the school chorus.

Laura Muller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Muller of Union, is a sophomore at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts in music education, voice and viola. Gerard Pregenzer, son of Dr. and Mrs. Gerard Pregenzer of Westfield, is a sophomore at SUNY Purchase College majoring in piano and composition.

Club member donations and concert performances by scholarship winners support the program. The first Musical Club award in 1922, was $25.

Enrichment Foundation To Present Garage Sale

The Education Enrichment Foundation of Scotch Plains and Fanwood will hold a garage sale on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a. m. to 2: 30 p. m. in the parking lot at Brunner Elementary School on Westfield Road in Scotch Plains.

Members of the Board of Trustees will donate items for sale. The Foundation is dedicated to providing enrichment activities for Scotch Plains and Fanwood students and provides grants to the staff of the district's public schools.

Alex Kasten Is Named To Pingry Honor Roll

Joyce Y. Hanrahan, Principal of The Pingry School, Short Hills Campus, has announced the third quarter Honor Roll for the sixth grade.

Among the students who received honors were Alex Kasten, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Kasten of Fanwood.

Students must receive at least a "B plus" average in academic subjects and no grade lower than "L" (grade level) in Special Subjects to qualify for the Honor Roll.
