St. Helen’s to Sponsor Enrichment Programs

St. Helen’s Parish in Westfield is sponsoring the following adult enrichment programs during September and October:

Art Pilgrimage to the Cloisters and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine will allow participants to travel by bus and enjoy guided tours of these two examples of religious and artistic beauty. The trip will be held on Saturday, September 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required; and the $32 fee does not include lunch.

All That I Am, a play of five narratives by Irene Mahoney, presents five women — some real, some fictitious — who ask the question, "What about me?" Players include Mary Ellen Fagan, Tricia Fagan and Maureen Fagan. It will be presented at the church on Sunday, October 19, at 8 p.m. The fee of $5 will be donated to a center for abused women and children.

For further information, please call Sister Joanna Kerwin at (908) 233-8757.

Torah Center Plans ‘Shofar Factory’

The Union County Torah Center will present "The Shofar Factory" on Sunday, September 28, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the center, 418 Central Avenue in Westfield. The center is located behind the West Coast Video Store.

Everyone who attends will learn and experience the various steps involved in transforming a ram’s horn into a Shofar, the horn traditionally blown in synagogues throughout the world on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The purpose of the Shofar is to awaken the entire Jewish Nation to repentance and motivate them to make good resolutions for the coming year.

The program is geared towards children and is designed to teach them about their heritage and the rituals they will be observing in their local synagogues.

The admission is $2 per person. For an additional $5, attendees can make and bring home their own Shofar.

For more information, please call the center at (908) 789-5252.
