Welcome to the 1997-1998 Girl Scouting year. As this new year begins, so does the advent of this Girl Scout column which will appear monthly in The Westfield Leader. Its purpose is to inform girls, their parents and their leaders about the upcoming events available to them through Girl Scouting.
The new scouting year officially begins on Wednesday, October 1. Girls who wish to become Girl Scouts may contact the Washington Rock Girl Scout Council at (908) 232-3236. We encourage girls who are considering becoming Girl Scouts to do so because Girl Scouts touch peoples lives through the service they provide, while broadening their own horizons.
Upcoming Girl Scout events in Westfield for which you should mark your calendar are: The Harvest Hayride, which is taking place on Saturday, November 8 (rain date is November 15), at Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside. The event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. and the cost is $1.50 per registered Girl Scout, which includes campfire, hay ride, marshmallows and cider.
Troop registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Each troop will be assigned one hour, with younger troops present during the early hours and the older girls during the later hours. Interested troops are asked to register promptly. Registration forms have been distributed to all leaders. Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts are needed to assist with younger scouts. Leadership and/or regular service hours can be earned.
The Westfield Girl Scout encampment will be held the weekend of Friday through Sunday, May 1-3. This annual event gives girls the opportunity to live in the wilderness, without the modern luxuries of every day life. Mark your calendars now if you are interested in this very popular event.
All registered Girl Scouts are welcome to attend these scouting events, but space is often limited. Persons who are interested in any activity listed above should contact their leaders so that she can provide timely registration.
The Washington Rock Girl Scout Chorus, has begun its fifth year. Girls and adults who enjoy singing and making new friends are encouraged to join the chorus, which rehearses approximately two evenings per month.
Girls and adults interested in "previewing" the chorus and its activities may join the group on Friday, October 17. For additional information regarding registration and time, please contact Skip Adams at Washington Rock Girl Scout Council at (908) 232-3236.
This concludes the first Westfield Girl Scout Wrap-Up. We hope that our activities will appeal to girls of all ages, so that they can become a part of our Girl Scout community. Were looking forward to a great year in Girl Scouting.
