Westfield High School Principal Robert G. Petix and his staff celebrated the first day of the new school year by welcoming more than 1,200 students on September 3.
Arriving for the first time at the high school were ninth graders from Edison and Roosevelt Intermediate Schools and newcomers to Westfield.
In opening remarks to the staff the day before the start of school, Dr. Petix identified several factors contributing to the strength of the high school.
"Terrific children with an exceptionally mature commitment to learning; demanding and supportive parents, a superb curriculum and the dedication of the entire staff," Dr. Petix said, "consistently advance to the tradition of excellence at Westfield High School."
Citing increases in both verbal and mathematics Standard Assessment Test scores and superb Advanced Placement scores, Dr. Petix urged veteran and new teachers alike to draw upon one anothers strengths to make the learning experiences of students challenging and positive ones.
To help students new to Westfield feel welcomed in their new school, English teacher Karin Ninesling and members of the Student Council organized a variety of activities.
Also new to Westfield High School this year are 18 new staff members, an influx of instructional technology, a new administrative software package and renovated rest rooms.
One ninth grader said, "The high school is big but I feel excited about being there and welcome."
