Corbin Brothers Capture First in Youth Tournament

Scotch PlainsFanwood (SPF) Youth Tennis Team was one of five towns that competed in the Youth Tennis League Tournament in Plainfield on August 2425. Rita Bokert, coach of the team, expressed her pride in the results achieved by her team members.

The SPF team took first place in three of the four divisions, second in three divisions and third in two divisions. Teammates John Corbin and J. T. Wilkinson competed in the 18 and under final, which was won by Corbin, 76, 64. Adam Corbin, won in the 14 and under division, with teammate Mike Hughes taking third place.

Mike Baumwoll placed second in the 12 and under division, with Billy Albizati capturing third place. In another allScotch PlainsFanwood final, Allie

Hambleton won her match against teammate Allie Zazzali in the under 10 division.

Congratulations were extended to Amy Ryan whose goal was to earn a spot on the High School team. Her goal was achieved.

Thanks to the generosity of the Bokert family, the achievements of outstanding members of the Scotch PlainsFanwood Youth Tennis Team have been commemorated on a plaque, beautifully arranged and engraved with the names of 13 former outstanding players. Mrs. Bokert, team coach, advised that future champions will also be added to this plaque in future. The public is invited to view the plaque which will be placed in the Trophy Case located in the Municipal Building’s lobby. Chemidlin crunched an RBI single

to rightcenter and Frank Pepe zipped an RBI single over third. Matt Fugett put the “Joe” boys ahead, 30, with an RBI single to right.

The St. James “Gang” forgot to load its guns and failed to get off a shot in the bottom of the inning. Both teams were silent in the second but superb fielding prevailed. After Antoine singled in the top of the second, “Gang” shortstop Ed Belford made a brilliant diving snag and tossed the runner out at first. In the bottom of the inning, Antoine at third made a magnificent lunging grab of a liner off the bat of “Gang” member

Terry Gallagher. Talcott led off the third with a walk and Ed Marchelitis sliced a single to leftcenter. Rothenberg stomped to the plate and thumped a tworun double to right, boosting St. Joseph’s lead to 50.

The “Gang” found some bullets and hit the target twice in the lower half of the third. Darryl Eaton looped a pellet over short. Marchelitis at short galloped into shallow left and made what appeared to be a spectacular diving catch. But when the umpire ruled that the ball was dropped, Eaton rolled into second with a double. Next, Hercel hammered an RBI triple to left and O’Hara’s grounder scored Hercel.

Two throwing errors allowed Pepe to score in the fourth, giving St.

St. ‘Joe’ Boys Corral St. James ‘Gang’, 65

Raider Girls Return Three Tennis Veterans

The Scotch PlainsFanwood High School girls tennis team who finished with a 163 record, losing only to the Blue Devils twice during the regular season and once in the state group tournament, will return three veterans. Seniors Carolyn Pilkington and Cara Bristol and junior Gail Hanningan will fill the first, second and third singles slots, respectively.

Last year, Pilkington notched a 174 record and placed second in the Union County Tournament. Three of her losses came from the racket of Blue Devil Jen Matro. Last year, Pilkington was selected First Team AllArea by The Courier News.

Bristol also had an excellent season last year, finishing 144 at third singles. Hannigan finished with a 56 record at second doubles.

Freshmen Elizabeth Pilkington and Amy Ryan have won the first doubles slot and sophomore Caitlin Mahoney, who had a 30 record at second doubles, and junior Katherine Walker will fill the second doubles slot.

The Raiders defeated J. P. Stevens, 41, in their opener on September 13.

1st singles: Carolyn Pilkington (SPF) d. Jaime Cheret, 61, 61

2nd singles: Cara Bristol (SPF) d. Michelle Luk, 63, 63

3rd singles: Gail Hannigan (SPF) d. Helen Soltesz, 62. 60

1st doubles: Elizabeth Pilkington and Amy Ryan (SPF) d. Natalie Gallanter and Mitali Munshi, 62, 36, 63

2nd doubles: Reena Amin and Erica Dixon (JP) d. Caitlin Mahoney and Katherine Walker, 61, 64

Joseph a 62 lead. And, although Tom Ulichny and Matt Hoelzel both singled in the fourth, the “Gang” failed to score.

In the fifth, St. Joseph second baseman Rich Worth dove to knock down a steaming grounder from Belford and held him to just a single. But, all was negated when Belford was called out for leaving first base too early. Joe Dolan hopped a single upthemiddle, then Stan Lesniewski made the score 63 with a triple to center.

St. Joseph pitcher Joe Matuska and St. James pitcher Nick Barattucci dominated in the sixth, seventh and

eighth innings with some help from their defenses. Belford initiated a double play in the sixth and made a great running catch in shallow left in the seventh while Antoine snagged another liner in the eighth.

After “Gang” third baseman Lesniewski made a smooth play, Bob Brennan and Worth both singled but St. Joseph was held scoreless in the ninth.

The “Gang” needed a breakout but found themselves on the verge of capture in the ninth with two outs and Eaton on first. Hercel squibbled an infield single, then O’Hara hammered a tworun double over the left fielder’s head to bring the “Gang” to within one. A chopper to short was collared by Marchelitis and fired to first to foil the notorious James “Gang.”

SPF Sideliners Tie One, Drop One in Bridgewater Tourney

The Scotch PlainsFanwood Sideliners U9 Intercity team opened up play in the Bridgewater tournament with two tough games on September 11. In game one, the Sideliners tied Somerset Hills, 00, and in game two, they fell to Hillsborough, 40.

Against the Somerset Hills Terminators there was plenty of outstanding defense on both sides. Josef Ellis and Brendan McEvoy shared the goaltending duties and had a stellar game, coming up with 14 saves between then. They were helped defensively by the smothering defense of Greg Bencivengo and Lester Nare. Andrew Smith, Danny Gore and Patrick Clancy also came up big for the defense.

Tom Holt and Andrew Smith used their speed as they continually pressed the ball into Terminator territory. Joseph Del Prete, Angelo Cerimele and Michael Scannell also kept constant pressure on

the Terminator goalie. Against the Hillsborough Strikers, Ellis was exceptional in goal and the defense of Bencivengo and Nare was near perfect. Smith, Gore and Clancy broke up several of their opponents scoring attempts. McEvoy, Holt, Smith, Del Prete, Cerimele and Scannell displayed excellent ball control and kept up the offensive pressure. However, in the end, the Strikers’ defense and goaltending proved to be just too much for the Sideliners.
