St. Anne’s Assault Staggers Dazed St. Louis Posse, 173

By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

St. Anne advanced to the second round of the Saints Division playoffs in St. Bartholomew’s Oldtimers Mens Softball League action by ditching the St. Louis “Posse”, 173, at Brookside Park in Scotch Plains on August 27. St. Anne got an entire team effort in its assault as every team member either scored or drove in a run.

After the “Posse” was blanked in the top of the first, St. Anne surged with five runs. Chuck Krajcsik thumped a leadoff triple to left. Wally Bradshaw whacked an RBI single to right and Jerry Reipe followed with a single to left. Karl Grossmann hopped an RBI double past first and Pete DeChristofaro chopped an RBI single past short. After “Posse” shortstop John Esposito made a fine leaping snag, Steve Mihansky lofted an RBI sacrifice fly to center. Charlie Laskowski upped the score to 50 with his RBI single to left.

St. Louis was quieted in the second thanks to a secondtofirst double play

initiated by pitcher Dom Deo. St. Anne’s bats were also quiet in the second.

Bob Pudlak had the only single for St. Louis in the third, then the “thunder sticks” of St. Anne exploded with eight runs to elevate the score to 130. Riepe wiggled a single over second, Grossmann crashed a single to right and Riepe scored when the ball was mishandled. DeChristofaro

tapped an RBI single to left and advanced to second on an error. Tony Gianucci walked and DeChristofaro scored when Mihansky’s grounder was overthrown.

Laskowski prolonged St. Louis’ agony with a single to left, then Joe McEvoy added to the misery with a tworun single to rightcenter. Deo drilled a single to right and Rich Chaplin slapped an RBI single upthemiddle. Finally, Krajcsik lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to center.

Esposito got the “Posse” on the scoreboard in the fourth when he singled to right then later scored on Rory Ruhl’s single to center; however, back came St. Anne with two runs in the lower half of the inning. Riepe ricocheted a hard single off the fingertip of the pitcher and Gianucci tomahawked an RBI single to left.
