Russell Grabs Sixth Crown; Skids Past Willoughby Road

Willoughby acted up in the fourth when Russo sizzled a single to left and Fred Gamboa walked, but Culinane cleverly escaped the inning.
Walz yielded only a single to Factor in the fifth, then Willoughby returned to the plate with high hopes of regaining the lead. McAlindin looped a leadoff single over third and Chris Park popped out to left. Bill Johnston jolted a single upthemiddle and Scott Gaito yanked a single to left. McAlindin rounded third and headed
for home. The throw from left zeroed in on the plate. McAlindin slid. Russell Road catcher Chris Masterson grabbed the ball and made a tag. Was he out or safe? He was called out. The tie remained.
Russell Road threatened in the sixth. With two outs, Paul LaMastra wiggled a single to left and Masterson walked, then Bob Pikarsky drilled a grounder down the third baseline which was grabbed by McAlindin who then tagged third for the force out.
Willoughby incited nervousness in the Russell defense in the sixth. With one man out, DePalma deflected a grounder off the third baseman’s glove and reached first safely. After Russo popped out to second, Mahoney legged

Secondseeded Russell Road came alive early and rolled to an 116 victory over topseeded Willoughby in game two of the Fanwood Old Men’s Softball Association Championship, evening the series at one game each, at LaGrande Park in Fanwood on August 24. Tim Walsh slammed two, tworun homers for the Russell Road “Crew” and teammates Mike Wechstein and Dave
Buchwald blasted one home run each. Chris McAlindin sparked the Willoughby squad in the top of the first with a single to left. Matt Maloney responded with a single to rightcenter, then Fred Gamboa’s ground out to
second brought home McAlindin. The Road “Crew” got rolling and took a 21 lead in the lower half of the inning. Don Weber hopped a single to left, then Walsh whacked his first tworun homer over the left field screen. Later, a fabulous catch by Willoughby right fielder Scott Gaito prevented further scoring.
Russell Road increased its lead to 41 in the second. Tom Culinane yanked a triple down the right field line and Wechstein followed with a

tworun homer to rightcenter. A leaping snag by Willoughby second baseman Chris Park impeded additional Russell Road “Crew” momentum in the inning.
Willoughby hitter Matt DePalma ripped a single off the shortstop’s glove in the third. McAlindin singled to left and Maloney bounced an RBI single past short. Gamboa narrowed the score to 43 with an RBI sacrifice fly to center. The rally ended when Russell pitcher Tom Culinane
grabbed a steaming line drive off the bat of Kevin Sicola.
The rumbling of the Road “Crew” was clearly heard in the third. After Gamboa, the Willoughby left fielder, made a brilliant running catch in left the noise began. Weber plunked a single over short and Walsh whistled his second tworun homer over the leftcenter field screen and into the playground. Scott Johnson rumbled down to first with a walk and zoomed to second on a fielder’s choice. When Clint Factor banged a single to left, Johnson barreled home to score. Factor then zipped around to make the score, 83, when Jordan Scher cracked a single to left.
Park singled to right for Willoughby in the fourth then scored when Bill Johntson’s chopper deflected off the glove of the first baseman. Willoughby was held to one run when Buchwald caught a liner in center field then threw out the runner as he tagged up and attempted to take second.
The Road “Crew” answered with one in the fourth when Kurt Staeudle drilled a long single off the screen in left, then scored on Dennis O’Connor’s spinning single over the second baseman’s head.
Willoughby made the score 96 with two runs in the fifth. DePalma whizzed a double over third base and McAlindin cleared the bases with a tworun shot which bounced to deep rightcenter. Gamboa and Sicola added singles but no further runs were scored.
Eric Birnbaum opened the first for Russell with a walk but Willoughby first baseman Johntson grabbed a liner off the bat of Johnson and quickly stepped on first for a double play. The Road “Crew”, however, did not relent. Buchwald blasted a solo home run into the playground, Factor followed with a single over short and Scher screamed a skidding RBI double to left.
Culinane tightened the reins for the remainder of the game and held Willoughby Road to only a single from McAlindin, who went fourforfour.

out an infield single by an inch. A sizzling grounder to third was seized by Jordan Scher for the third out.
The fateful seventh inning began with a leadoff strikeout. Culinane chopped a single by the second baseman, then Tim Walsh whammed a shot over the left field screen, just foul by inches. Two pitches later, Walsh lined out to left for the second out. Buchwald hit a pop up behind second which appeared to be the third out; however, the ball was dropped.
With runners on first and third, Factor strutted to the plate and launched a shot off the left field screen. Culinane’s courtesy runner scored and Buchwald rounded third, dashed toward home and dove facefirst onto the plate, just inches ahead of the throw home.
The Russell Road “Crew” was in the driver’s seat, 31, but Willoughby had one last chance to settle the score. Kevin Sicola led off by ricocheting a single off the second base pad and McAlindin followed with a single past Walsh’s fingertips at short. The pressure was on Culinane. Next, a pop up to short followed by a strikeout brought the championship to within one out. A pop out to second gave Russell Road its sixthstraight title.
