Rotary Club to Present Award To Gaile and Bud Boothe

WESTFIELD – The Charles P. Bailey Humanitarian Award, handed out annually by the Rotary Club of Westfield, will be given on Wednesday, November 17 to Mr. and Mrs. Bud Boothe.

This award is presented yearly to a Westfield resident who has exemplified outstanding dedication and service to the community.

As a member of the College Women’s Club, Mrs. Boothe worked to create the Anna Kane Scholarship for worthy students to complete higher education.

“Westfield is fortunate to have dedicated people like Bud and Gaile Boothe, who have given so much to the community,” stated Dr. Bonsall. “Together they have provided more than 45 years of service to our community. The Westfield Rotary is pleased to have the opportunity to present them with the Charles P. Bailey Humanitarian Award.”

The award will be presented on Wednesday, November 17, at Echo Lake Country Club.

The Selection Committee must choose from among many persons who are nominated by citizens interested in the welfare of the community and who are appreciative of the dedication of those who serve.

The award is given in memory of Charles P. Bailey, a former Mayor of Westfield, and a Past President of the Rotary Club of Westfield.

Mr. Boothe is a graduate of Princeton University and received his law degree from Harvard University. He served as an attorney with American Cyanamid Company.

He has been active in the community as councilman for the second ward for 12 years and Mayor of

Westfield for four years. Mr. Boothe has worked on the Westfield Planning Board, the Downtown Westfield Corporation and served on the board for the Youth and Family Counseling Services. He is also an active member of the Westfield Historical Society.

Since his retirement, Mr. Boothe has worked actively with Habitat for Humanity on construction

projects in Plainfield and Tuckerton, New Jersey, Kentucky and Houston and international projects in Hungary, Philippines and Canada.

Mrs. Boothe is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College with a master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania. She served as a teacher in Westfield since 1971.

She started her career in Westfield teaching at the elementary level at Wilson and Franklin Elementary Schools. In 1980, she began teaching at Roosevelt Intermediate School and in 1987 went to Westfield High School to teach math.

Over the past 28 years, Mrs. Boothe was very active as a cheerleader coach, an advisor to Student Council, Future Teachers Club and Young Republican Club; a member of the Intermediate Planning and Instructional Grouping Committees; a representative for the Math Department in the Parent-Teacher Organization, and as an officer for the Westfield Education Association.

County’s Magnet High School To Offer Information Session

SCOTCH PLAINS — The Union County Magnet High School for Science, Mathematics and Technology, 1776Raritan Road,ScotchPlains,will host an information session for interested applicants and parents for next September’s freshman class on Saturday,October23,at 10a.m.inMancuso Hall.

The Magnet School offers an engineering and design technology-based

curriculum, prepares students for entry into a baccalaureate-degree program.

The school, in collaboration with Union County College, provides the opportunity for students to earn up to a year of college credits prior to high school graduation.

Miller-Cory House Prepares For Historic Tour Weekend

WESTFIELD — The Miller-Cory House Museum, located at 614 Mountain Avenue, Westfield, will be featured on a free two-day fall tour of 22 Union County historical sites.

For “Four Centuries Weekend,” the Miller-Cory House will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 23, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 24.

The Museum will conduct tours of the house and gardens along with demonstrations of 18th century cooking.

Built in 1740, the Miller-Cory House Museumstandsonthe “roadtothemountains” in Westfield. The Miller-Cory House wasnamedinhonor ofitstwopreRevolutionary owners, both descended from the earliest settlers in this area.

Welcome Wagon Club Slates 40th Anniversary Dinner

WESTFIELD – The Welcome Wagon Club of Westfield will celebrateits40th anniversaryattheclub’s monthly dinner meeting on Thursday, November 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Chanticler Chateau in Warren.

Westfield Hadassah Plans Annual Godparents Dinner

WESTFIELD—WestfieldHadassah’s annual Godparents Dinner will be held at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield on Sunday, November 7, at 6 p.m.

The proceeds from this event will benefit the Mother and Child Center at Hadassah Hospital in Israel. Hadassah raised money for the establishment of the center during previous fundraisers.

These new funds will be used for the furnishing oflaboratories,commonrooms and patient and treatment rooms in the hospital.

The purpose of the new center is to provide healing for children and maternity care for mothers in a child-friendly environment, featuring the latest treatments, diagnostic tools and a specialized pediatric and maternity staff.

Fully operational, the center is the foremost facility for maternity and pediatric care in the Middle East.

Godparents 1999 will feature a varied hors d’oeuvres table of special Middle Easterntidbits, dinneranddessert.Champagne and wine will accompany each course.

Entertainment will feature Ruthie Cohen, an Israeli singer of traditional and modern ballads, and the Ralph MitchellOrchestra forlisteninganddancing enjoyment.

Godparent’s certificates will be issued forthe$185 contributionmadebycouples. Those names will be inscribed in the Book of Life on display at Hadassah Hospital. Single participants contribute $92.50.
