PUPPET SHOW… Kathleen Jacobs & Puppets will perform at Park Middle School in Scotch Plains, as part of the Annual Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 28, at 7 p. m.

SCOTCH PLAINS – The annual Halloween Parade in Scotch Plains will be held on Thursday, October 28, beginning at 6 p. m. The parade route will begin at Scotch Plains Municipal Building and end at Park Middle School.

The local police and fire departments will assist in the event. Marchers will proceed down Park Avenue to Park Middle School. Paraders will then be treated to an interactive puppet show by Kathleen Jacobs & Puppets. This production will feature

the mysterious Dragon which will come to life with the assistance of audience members.

In the event of rain, which will cancel the parade, participants will proceed directly to Park Middle School’s auditorium for the puppet show.

A pumpkin will be given to one member of each family, compliments of the Scotch Plains Business & Professional Association and a candy treat from the Scotch Plains Department of Recreation.

IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY!… Hosted by Franklin Elementary School, The Great Pumpkin Fair will return this year on Saturday, October 23, from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m., rain or shine, at Roosevelt Intermediate School. Scarecrow making, cookie walks, a Chinese auction, crafts, games, caricatures and a bake sale will be available. Tickets for the event will be presold at Franklin School and on the day of the fair. WESTFIELD – Joanne Krueger, a Scotch Plains resident and former president of the Union County Master Gardeners, will present a free lecture, “Tips on Fall Bulbs” on Wednesday, October 27, at 1 p. m. at the Scotch Hills Country Club in Scotch Plains.

The presentation will cover his tory, selection, planting techniques

and care. The discussion will be illustrated with color slides and free handouts.

WESTFIELD – The St. Lawrence String Quartet will perform for instrumental students at Westfield High School on Monday, October 25, to explain their music and coach students.

The ensemble will appear as part of the Arbor Chamber Music Society’s Mentoring Program, which brings musicians to the high school string and wind students throughout the school year. The program is made possible this year by Lucent Technologies, the Westfield Foundation and the Bergen Foundation.

The St. Lawrence String Quartet will open the Chamber Society’s ninth season on Sunday, October 24, at 4 p. m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield. A program featuring Schumann’s String Quartet No. 1, Janacek’s String Quartet after Tolstoy (“ Kreutzer”) and Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet,

with pianist Lenore Davis, will be held.

Radio City Holiday Trip Planned for December

SCOTCH PLAINS – Scotch Plains Department of Recreation will sponsor a trip to see the Wednesday, December 14, performance of the “Christmas Spectacular” in Radio City Music Hall.

The bus will leave from Green Forest Park in Scotch Plains at 3 p. m. and return to the park, leaving New York City immediately after the 5 p. m. performance.

There is a limit of four tickets per person and residents may register beginning on Monday, November 1. The cost is $45 per person.

Nonresidents may register, spacepermitting, beginning on Monday, November 8, at a cost of $47 per person. Children attending must be over five years old and will be charged the adult price.

Holiday Craft Bazaar Set By Atlas Chapter

WESTFIELD – Atlas Chapter No. 99 Order of the Eastern Star of New Jersey will hold its Holiday Bazaar at the Masonic Temple in Westfield on Saturday, October 23, from 9 a. m. to 3: 30 p. m.

Lunch will be served from 11: 30 a. m. to 1: 30 p. m.

Handcrafted items, fall and Christmas decorations and baked goods will be available.

Fiftyone Union County organizations and presenters of arts programs will receive a total of $144,600 from the 19992000 Union County Arts Grant Program:

Westfield:

·Lenore Davis of the Arbor Chamber Music Society: $4,000 for six chamber music concerts and $2,500 for master classes in middle and high schools.

·Ann Hoener of the Choral Art Society: $3,500 for a series of choral music concerts.

·Cynthia Smith of Westfield Community Players: $5,000 for an annual series of theatrical productions.

·Dr. Barbara Thomson of the First Congregational Church of Westfield: $1,800 for a series of halfhour concerts entitled, “MidDay Musicales.”

·Margaret N. Fontana of Function Ten: $1,300 to provide a series of four theatrical performances.

·Elisa Sananman of New Jersey Connect, Inc.: $3,500 to provide a public art mural in a specialneeds facility.

·Julia Black of the Westfield Y and First Night Westfield: $1,800 to present to New Year’s Eve arts events.

Scotch Plains:

·Lois Altschul of the Jewish Community Center of Central New Jersey: $1,800 for the musical theater revue, “Broadway Kids.”

·Linda O’Brien of the Scotch PlainsFanwood PTA Young People’s Theatre: $2,200 to fund a series of eight theatrical performances.

Fanwood:

·Ching H. (Robert) Chang of the Chinese American Cultural

Association: $3,000 for performances and classes in Chinese and Western choral music.

The organizations receiving grants through programs coordinated by the Union County Division of Cultural and Heritage Affairs will be honored by the Freeholder Board at a reception that celebrates October as National Arts and Humanities Month.

The reception, hosted by The Elizabethtown Gas Company at its

headquarters at Liberty Hall Center in Union, on Wednesday, October 27, at 6 p. m. is open to the public. Recognition will also be given to 10 recipients who were awarded directly from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, 54 Union County HEART (History, Education, Art Reaching Thousands) Grant recipients and the 22 “Four Centuries In A Weekend” sites of Union

County. Marcia Cohen, Chairman of Union County Cultural and Heritage Programs Advisory Board explained that the applications were initially evaluated by professional panels and then were reviewed by the Arts Grant Committee in a competitive process before being acted upon by the Advisory Board.

WESTFIELD — Kathy Czap of Westfield recently completed the North American Summer Music Games Tour with the Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps.

The group’s finalist finish at the Drum Corps International World Championships in Madison, Wisc. placed it in the Top 6 in the world and the Top 5 drum corps in its division in North America.

This is Kathy’s second season with the Raiders. She was featured on the flag and also appeared in dance solos.

During the winter months, Kathy performs with Stardust Color

Guard, also sponsored by the Raiders. Kathy is a Junior at Westfield High School where she participates in the marching band program.

The Raiders are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Secaucus, and the Joseph Lane American Legion Post of Lodi.

Membership age ranges from 14 to 21 years. Registration for the RAIDERS 2000 will begin in October.
