plunged into the endzone, but his knee was ruled down at the threeinch line. Finally on the second play of the fourth quarter, sophomore halfback Terrence Jenkins smashed in for the touchdown. MacDonald’s kick boosted the score to 23-0.

The Bulldogs had another drive cut short when Tuohy made a leaping interception on the Westfield 38 and returned it 23 yards to the Bulldog 39. Runs by Giacone, Reavis and Jenkins gave the Blue Devils a second down at the Bulldog one but a penalty and a botched pitchout re

covered by the Bulldogs at the 18 quelled the drive.

The Bulldogs averted a shutout with an 82-yard drive which was capped by quarterback Jibril Stokes’ three-yard touchdown run with 3:34 remaining. Later, with less than a minute left, Blue Devil sophomore Jay Cook made a leaping interception at the Bulldog 27.

The Blue Devils had 253 yards rushing on 42 carries and Giacone was 3-7 passing for 46 yards for 299 total yards. The Bulldogs had 220 total yards, 122 rushing and 98 pass

JACKIE LAVERY TAKES SECOND IN ALL-AROUND

Pioneers’ Huge Scores Top Lady Raider Gymnasts By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Sophomore Jackie Lavery scored her highest total this season, and second b e s t ever, b u t the very talented Somerville gymnastics team received some incredible scores from the judges to out-point the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School girls, 108.05-103.65. Although a defeat, the team total was the highest accumulated this season by the Raiders.

“It was one of our best scores,” said Raider Head Coach Tammy DelRosario. “Our highest score was 106 about four or five years ago. We did very well. We did not have too many falls on beam. We got some

scoring, DelRosario said, “ It depends on how they start. I was disappointed in some of our scores; however, some of our scores were high. I

believe the scoring in general was a little high.”

Lavery’s total of 35.5 in the all-around placed her second behind Pioneer Laurinda Sutpen who edged her by .5, totaling 36. Lavery, who pos

sesses incredible strength and “moxie” performed a stun

ning routine on the balance beam which featured a gutsy back flip on the 4” board, several powerful leaps and a straight-arm press to a handstand. Her effort earned her a second with

a 9.25. “The beam is my favorite,” said Lavery. “I like it when I hit the back flip. The handstand is

vault, the beam and the bars. “It gets sore afterwards and hurts a little during my routines,” said Church of her injury. “But, I don’t think about it that much. I am not sure when I will be at my peak. I am just taking it day by day.”

DelRosario said of Church, “Right now, her routines are still watered down but she was clean with her routines and scored well. I can’t wait to see when she is able to fully compete.”

Co-Captain Kelly Church had a score of 8.7 on the floor, an 8.6 in the vault, an 8.3 on the unevens and a 7.0

on the beam. Co-Captain Diana Filo fared well with an 8.0 on

the floor, a 7.85 in the vault and a 7.65 on the bars. Junior Rachel Eannucci had an 8.2 on the beam and sophomore

Megan Grabel earned a n 8.55 in the vault and a 7.9 on the bars.

Somerville elevated its record to 4-0 while the Raiders moved to 5-1.

Tranchina added, “We needed this big time. We were stopping them up front and held them to one touch

down. We should have scored again here on the six-inch line.”

Tranchina pointed out, however, “We had too many penalties. We had four major penalties which was bad. We have to work on that. We are making progress.”
