Big Line, Jones Astonish Tigers, 35-0, in Clash
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13
In the second half the Raider offensive and defensive lines continued to pound the tiring Tigers. The result was a 21-point Raider spree in the third quarter.
Raider Clifton Freshwater received the kickoff on the five and returned it to the 19. Using Jones on every play but one, Schiller engineered an 81yard drive which resulted in a sweet 20-yard touchdown run by Jones.
Next, the Tigers were stopped on their first series and forced to punt where Jones signaled for a fair catch at the 20. On the first play, Jones found a seam, slipped through it and the race was on again until he touched the goal post 80 yards away. Gillie completed his fourth extra point to boost the lead to 28-0.
The continuous pounding of Loomis, Herrmann, Jeremy Dodge and Jenerette took its toll on the exhausted Tigers. Another punt gave the Raiders the ball at their own 35. Again, Jones poured through the Tiger defense like water through a leaky house. Not infallible, Jones did have another nice run but fumbled on the
eight where it was recovered by teammate David Larkin on the five. Jones took care of matters, however, when he zoomed into the endzone with :08 left of the third quarter.
Jones rested in the fourth, but the Raider defense did not. Highlighted by an eight-yard quarterback sack at the hands of Loomis, the Raider defense maintained the shutout.
“Overall, our defense and offense had their best game of the year,” expressed Ciccotelli.
The Raiders will travel to Belvidere on Friday, October 22 to face a fine Stateliners team.
“We will talk about the game in films this week and I will remind them of the importance of the game,” concluded Ciccotelli.

Blue Devils Lower Highlanders, 8-0
Kristen Leonardis and Nicole Seib ripped the net three time each to lead the third-seeded Westfield High School field hockey team over the Governor Livingston girls, 8-0, in Westfield on October 16. Jessica Wyckoff and Paige Corbett added one goal apiece.

CORBETT BURNS IN TWO GOALS
Blazing Devils Topple Hilltopper Girls, 2-0
By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
The momentum continues to roll in the right direction as the Westfield High School field hockey team burned the Hilltoppers, 2-0, in Summit on October 13. Senior Paige Corbett blazed in both goals in the first half and the Blue Devil defense did the rest to maintain the shutout.
Since battling to a 0-0 tie with then seventh-ranked Pompton Lakes on September 30, the Blue Devils banged off impressive victories over Union, Piscataway and now Summit which has been seeded third for the Union County Tournament, Kent Place gained the top seed and the Blue Devils have been seeded second.
“We did very well against Piscataway and they did very well against us,” commented Head Coach Maggie McFadden. “I guess the real difference in that game was that we did a better job finishing than they did. That game was very scary however. They had some good attacks that we had to hold off. They had us back on our heels a little bit.”
Against the Hilltoppers, Corbett scored her first goal from 16 yards out midway through the first half when she
netted a corner shot from senior Kristen Leonardis. Seven minutes before the half, Corbett stormed back, shirked a defender and whipped the ball over the goal from about 15 yards out.
“Paige really stepped up. She scored some beautiful goals,” explained McFadden. “She is shooting a lot better, taking more shots and getting more opportunities.”
The Hilltoppers did threaten throughout the game and Blue Devil goalie Jen Woodbury was up to the challenge as she made several crucial rejections.
“It was a well-played game on the part of both teams and was fairly evenly played,” said McFadden. “Summit had some chances obviously since they had 10 shots on goal. Jen (Woodbury) played outstandingly. We just got the better of them that day.”
McFadden concluded, “Very quietly, we have been d o ing what we want to
do. My kids are not flashy. I don’t have
one superstar. They are not a dominating team. They have just been able to capitalize on other
teams’ mistakes. They work well to
gether and go out and do their job.
They expect to win when they
go out on the field.”
The Blue Devils lifted their record to 9-2-1 a n d Wo o d b u r y chalked up her sixth shutout of the season. Summit skid to 7-3-1.
Westfield 2 0 2 Summit 0 0 0
lead, Head Coach Tom Breznitsky was not particularly pleased with the performance. “We got two goals in the first five minutes, then we fell asleep. You can’t let that happen. You have to stay sharp. Kids have to remain hungry. Too many guys have been complaisant. So I made some changes and sat some guys down.”
Immediately, with just :43 off the clock, Zotti rushed inside the box and netted his second goal. Exactly three minutes later, he duplicated the feat. Next, with 8:58 off the clock, junior Andy Babicz scored on an assist from junior Brett Bushinger.
The Raiders were rolling and along came Hensal on an unassisted goal with 16 minutes left in the game. With 9:36 remaining, Hensal, from the right corner, nailed the far left post to finalize the scoring. The Raiders improved to 9-2-1.
“I started playing those guys who have been working harder and
harder,” commented Breznitsky. “When you play a team who sits back in the box you have to open it up a
little bit with your spacing and movement off of the ball.”
However, Breznitsky was pleased with
some performances. “When you see a guy like Dwight Simms who as a freshman scores with his head,
that is a guy who wants to play. I have four freshmen who are doing well. One
(Hensal) scored two goals today. They are coming on and some of the older guys are going to have to learn that they must keep work
ing. Because, if they are not, somebody will take their place.”
