OFFENSIVE LINE, DEFENSIVE LINE AND JONES DO IT IN STYLE

Big Line, Nate Jones, Raiders Astonish Tigers, 35-0, in Clash of Unbeatens By DAVID B. CORBIN

Silence is golden! Especially since the ever-improving Westfield High School football team muffled the Bulldogs from Malcolm X. Shabazz for three and one half quarters and seized a 23-6 victory at Gary Kehler Stadium in Westfield on October 16. Sophomore Blue Devil halfback Diano Reavis roared, however, as he scored on touchdown runs of 73 and nine yards and totaled 125 yards rushing on seven carries.

On the second play from scrimmage in the first quarter, from the Blue Devil 27, Reavis ripped into the

open and into the endzone with just :53 off the clock. Ryan MacDonald’s kick gave the Devils a 7-0 lead. With 6:15 left in the quarter, Reavis d i d it again, this time for

nine yards, upping the score to 13-0.

“He’s doing good. He’s still

a young pup! He is going to

be around a little while,” said Blue Devil Head

Coach Ed Tranchina.

The dogged Blue Devil defense continued to hold the Bulldogs at bay in the second quarter. MacDonald then

pushed the Blue Devil lead to 16-0 with a 40-yard field goal with 2:15 left in the half.

Blue Devil defensive alertness paid off again in the third quarter. The Bulldogs attempted to pull off a fake punt but the ball was fumbled and Reavis smothered it at the Blue Devil 38. Later, a Devil punt rolled dead at the Bulldog 18. Devastating tackles by Dave King, Tom Hanscom and Pat Tuohy sputtered a Bulldog drive at their own 30. Next, Hanscom created a fumble and leaped on it at the 29.

A few plays later, Reavis sliced 20 yards to the Bulldog three. Quarterback Chris Giacone pushed to the six-inch line. Tuohy seemed to have

Fabulous offense, fabulous defense, fabulous Jones! In a battle of the unbeaten, the Scotch PlainsFanwood High School football team did nearly everything right and racked up a stunning 35-0 victory

over the Tigers in Linden on October 16 to remain unbeaten at 5-0. Once again senior Nathan Jones provided a startling performance both offensively and defensively but it was also the entire team’s efforts which were awe striking.

One can not say too much as Jones rushed for four touchdowns, amass

ing 307 on 34 carries, snagged a pass which resulted in a 75-yard touchdown, made a leaping, one-hand interception and made several cracking tackles. In fact, the Raider defense swarmed all over the Tigers and prevented any hope of a score. Through the guidance of sophomore quarterback Brian Schiller, the Raider offensive line and fullback Gary Cousar fired out first and opened holes for Jones. Once given the chance, Jones then shook off would be tacklers and was off to the races.

“His job is to get us into the endzone,” said Raider Head Coach Steve Ciccotelli of Schiller. “We are bringing him along slowly and keeping it simple not to blow his mind. He is getting better every week and he is making good decisions.”

Ciccotelli added, “Jones had almost 400 yards of total offense. As Jones said in his Comcast interview, he is not doing it by himself. We have a good offensive line. Those guys are playing very well right now.”

Defense prevailed in the first quarter as neither team mounted a serious

scoring threat. Hammering tackles at the line by Dan Loomis,

Dave Herrmann, Rob Dinsmore and Ron Jenerette

kept the Tigers at bay. Toward the end of the quarter the Raiders got

the ball on their own twenty. On second down, Jones slashed to the 25 as the quarter ended. On the very first play of the second quar

ter Schiller hit Jones in full stride over the middle. From there, he burned the turf, leaving everybody in the dust until he reached pay dirt while ticking

only ten seconds off the clock. Doug Gillie’s kick gave the Raiders a 7-0 lead.

On the kickoff, the ball glanced off Tiger Mike

Roman’s pads and was recovered at the 32 by Raider Josh Finkelstein. Three carries and a personal foul later, the ball rested on the nine where Jones rolled right and glided into the endzone with 9:52 left in the half Gillie’s kick upped the score to 14-0. Prior to the half, Jenerette recovered a Tiger fumble and Jones made his spectacular interception.

Soccer Raiders Baffle Bears, 9-0, in UCT By DAVID B. CORBIN

Five Raiders penetrated the net as the firsts e e d e d Scotch PlainsFanwood H i g h S c h o o l boys soccer team o v e r whelmed t h e B r e a r l e y Bears, 9-0, in the first round of the Union County Tournament in Scotch Plains on October 15. Junior Mike Zotti ripped the net three times and freshman Jeff Hensal hit for two goals.

Zotti started the assault just :50 into the game when he nailed a left

footed shot into the net. Four minutes into the game, senior Martin Barredo scored on a cross from junior Dave Bell.

The score remained the same until Z o t t i hooked a corn e r kick and freshman

remaining, Bell fired a right-footed, point-blank shot into the net to make the score 4-0 at the half.

Blue Devil Girls Chill Blue Knights, 9-0

Boom! Within the first twenty minutes of the game the Westfield High School girls soccer team rolled up a 7-0 lead then eased to a 9-0 icing of Irvington in Westfield on October 13. Senior Donna Schaller started t h e chill with two goals within the first two

minutes. In less than a minute, Schaller penetrated the box and ripped the ball into the upper center portion of the net from 10 yards out. Alex Lee was credited with an assist. Moments later Schaller, on an assist from senior Kristen Salmond, penetrated again and drilled a left-footed shot, upping the score to 2-0.

Within a minute on an assist from Schaller, it was freshman midfielder Sue Williams’ turn to score, then a few minutes later, senior Kristen Salmond, assisted by Jen Korecky, sailed a right-to-left shot to jump the Blue Devils’ lead to 4-0. Not once, during that time, were the Blue Knights successful in crossing into

Blue Devil territory. Blue Devil Morgan Lang hooked a shot in front of the goal and Salmond was at the scene to tap it in. Later, with nearly 23 minutes remaining in the half, Elisa Cognetti

ripped an una s s i s t e d

shot into the up

Va l e r i e Griffeth and rippled the left side of the Blue Knights’ n e t , making the score 7-0.

With mercy, Blue Devil Head Coach Pete Giordano mellowed the assault to hold the halftime score at 7-0. Two more goals, however, were scored in the second half. Korecky found success, then Staci Spass followed with the final goal.

The Blue Devils boosted there record to 7-0-3 while the Blue Knights slumped to 0-11.
