Express Nip N. Hunterdon, Tie U12 East Brunswick
The SPF U12 Express defeated North Hunterdon, 10, and tied East Brunswick, 33, on November 67. The victory and tie broke a threegame losing streak and improved its season record to 1163.
North Hunterdon took control early as the Express continued its strong defense/ punchless offense trend. The tide began to turn in the second half as, playing into the wind, the Express began to apply pressure to the North Hunterdon defense.
Finally, Sean Young took a Jonathan DeFiore corner kick that bounced in front of the goal and punched it into the net for the only score. D. J. Garrett played an outstanding game in goal, especially in the first half when North Hunterdon applied most of its pressure. Matt Fleissner battled offensively throughout the second half, and Jeff Bell, Mark Ciecura and Brian Osbahr anchored the defense, while Henry Coxe and Joe Cepparulo were strong in midfield.
The Express jumped to a 10 lead against East Brunswick when a DeFiore
corner kick curled into the net. The offensive pressure continued, but East Brunswick hung in and answered with two goals before the half.
Scoring again midway through the second half to make it 31, East Brunswick appeared to have the game in hand, but the Express battled back. With 10: 00 remaining, Clayton Balch headed in a DeFiore corner kick to draw the Express within one.
Furious attacks followed and forced an East Brunswick handball in the box with under a minute to play. Young stepped up and drilled the penalty shot into the upper left corner for the tie.
Bell and Osbahr continued their strong play at fullback while Fleissner continued to make long runs down the right side and Jack Davis played efficiently at left halfback. Matt Hirschhorn and Jeff Annese battled at left wing and Joey Dziedzic gave a hustling, physical effort at midfield.
Summit Hilltoppers Tumble Westfield PAL ‘B’, 70
In a game characterized by a respectable Blue Devil defense, the Summit Hilltoppers edged the Westfield PAL “B” team, 70.
Playing into a stiff wind, Westfield’s offense took control at their own 35. Unable to capitalize, they were forced to punt four plays later. The punt was short and the Hilltoppers took possession at midfield.
Initially, Summit was stopped in their tracks by the formidable presence of Chris Witkowski, Marc Dowling, D. J. Hopkins, Matt Perrelli, Michael Scaliti and Brandon Pantano. However, two plays later, the Hilltoppers slipped a tackle and dashed into the end zone. The PAT was good making the score 70.
The offensive efforts of Michael Gorski, Mike Diaz, Tommy DelDuca,
Kevin Behr and Nick DeRosa were for naught as the Blue Devils failed to establish good field position by the half.
While both teams stalled offensively in the second half, the Blue Devils defense took the field, erected a Blue Wall and conducted serious business. Perrelli laid the foundation by recovering the first Hilltopper fumble. Cowles Stewart took over on the next series, recovering a second fumble. On the Hilltoppers next possession, it was Richie Stewart’s turn to recover, while several plays later, Mark Harbaugh trapped the fourth Hilltoppers fumble.
In addition, Richie Stewart pounded through the line for a sack. Unfortunately, and in spite of the efforts of Andrew Shaffer, Thomas Meylor, Pierce Gaynor, and Jon Herttua, the Blue Devils were unable to find the endzone.
