Westfield PAL ‘D’ Defeats Perth Amboy PAL, 136

The Blue Devils played a tough game in their 136 win against the Red Rangers on November 14.

Defensive players Chris Kalis and Mike McCrea made great tackles to limit Perth Amboy’s first possession to four plays. In the Ranger’s second series, defensive end Joe VallLlobera put pressure on the QB and cornerback Brian Checchio protected against the pass keeping the Rangers scoreless.

In the Blue Devil’s second offensive series, wide receiver Nicholas Cox threw a great block giving Gil Chapman the corner on a pitch play that resulted in a 52yard TD run. Halfback Michael

Henry swept left and cut upfield to cross the goal line earning Westfield’s extra point.

Perth Amboy scored near the end of the half on a sweep play but

failed in their extra point attempt. Offensive players Todd Saunders, Kevin Neylan and Jordan Sharif played important roles when Chapman ran another pitch play for the Blue Devils second TD. The extra point was unsuccessful.

After the half, neither team scored during a defensive battle with key tackles by VallLlobera, Jimmy Reardon, John Dugan, Brett DeFazio and Jimmy Heffernan and near interception by Charlie Read. Westfield’s final game will be Sunday, November 21 at 10: 30 am at home against Scotch Plains.

SPF Soccer Jazz Girls Tie Millburn Magic Girls, 11

The Scotch PlainsFanwood Jazz girls intercity soccer team battled the Millburn Magic to a 11 tie in a wellplayed game at School One on November 14. It was the second time this season the teams met and tied, 11.

The Magic started with a goal midway through the first period. Soon afterwards, the Jazz pressured the Magic with persistent offensive play. Towards the end of the half, Becca McGuire made a nifty move just past midfield, shook a few defenders and sent the ball to Loni Kaye who darted through to the 18 yard line. At that point Kaye slipped the ball to Lauren Mains who rushed past a Magic player and drilled a shot into the right corner or the net to tie the score.

The Jazz ruled in the second half with solid defense from Katie Van Haasteren, Kristin Henkels and Shannon Hauser and mounted several attacks but were unable to score. On one play Lindsey Fitzgerald fought through two Millburn players and sent a pass to Meaghan Kelly who broke free down the middle of the field, but the goalkeeper moved out to

snatch the ball away before Kelly could get off a shot. On another play Bitsy Kipping took a shot right off her face but directed the ball to Jess McGarry who fired just wide.

Millburn made one final rush but just as a Magic player appeared to break free Gaby Falco swooped in front left fullback to stifle the threat.

SPF U9 Sideliners Crunch Clark U9 Soccer Boys, 42

The Sideliners of the Scotch PlainsFanwood Intercity U9 put it all together and topped the team from Clark, 42, on November 14. It was the Sideliners’ best performance of the season and the game was not as close as the score would indicate.

After falling behind 10, the Sideliners turned on the offense. Thomas Holt got the Sideliners on the scoreboard as he took an inbounds pass and powered the ball past the diving Clark goalie.

Joseph Del Prete gave the Sideliners the lead for good when he took the ball from a crowd in front of the Clark goal

and put it into the net. Angelo Cerimele then used a powerful leg to record two goals, the second one coming on a perfect assist from Brendan McEvoy.

McEvoy, Del Prete, Holt, Cerimele and Andrew Smith used speed and outstanding ball control as they were able to drive on Clark at will. The Sideliner goaltending was near perfect as Josef Ellis and Danny Gore combined to shutout Clark. Mike Scannell and Smith were equally awesome in the goal as they faced a barrage of shots and turned away all but two.

Defensively, the Sideliners applied a vice grip. Greg Bencivengo and Steven Young completely smothered Clark as they patrolled the Sideliner side of the field flawlessly. Ellis, Gore and Scannell also came up big on defensive as they broke up several passes and scoring attempts.

Westfield PAL B ‘D’ Rules; Ties Perth Amboy, 00

The Red Raiders of Perth Amboy ran into a roadblock after arriving at Kehler Stadium when the strength and tenacity of the Blue Devil defense allowed no points, resulting in a 00 tie.

The Red Raiders took possession on their own 35. The crippling defense of Mike Diaz, Marc Dowling, Matt Perrelli, DJ Hopkins, Brandon Pantano and Richie Stewart forced them to punt six plays later.

Diaz brought the ball to the Westfield 28, but the offensive maneuvering of Nick DeRosa, Terron Rogers and Tommy DelDuca was cut short by the Red Raid ers’ beefy defensive line. Not to be outdone,

the Blue Devils forced a fumble which was recovered by Andrew Shaffer.

In the second quarter, the Red Raiders ground out two first downs. A determined Cowles Stewart, Mark Harbaugh, Michael Scaliti and Sean Young halted their drive and Perrelli, Pantano and Richie Stewart pushed for three successive loss of yards.

The Blue Devil offense sparked before the half as Pierce Gaynor, Michael Gorski and Rogers pounded out successive gains behind Brandon Cuba, Brendan Cline, David Cognetti, Tim Dohm and Jon Herttua.

Tough defensive play highlighted the third quarter. Matt Risberg, Bobby Mroz, Mike Finne, Thomas Meylor and Scott Steinbrecher shut down the Red Raiders in their initial series.

Determined to avenge the Blue Devils defensive line, the Red Raiders marched the ball to within the Westfield four. Four plays later, the Blue Devils stood proud and held the Red Raiders. Despite the offensive efforts of Tommy Layton, Robert Broadbent, and Kevin Behr the Blue Devils were unable to score.

GROUP 2, ROUND 2: Union Catholic over Harrison, 153, 1416, 153

Deena Zack was deadly with 16 kills and four digs and Kathy Babicz amassed 47 assists as the Vikings improved to 184.

NOVEMBER 11: GROUP 3, ROUND 2: Paramus Catholic (211) over Cranford (139), 151, 152

No. 2, Paramus Catholic did not give the Cougars a chance as Heather Galaydick had 12 service points and 10 digs and teammate Sharon Becker notched seven kills.

The Cowboys retaliated and were led by Josh McMahon and David Reinhardt, who scored two touchdowns each. Cowboy QB Troy Johnson threw for three more scores, while Anthony Arnold added another touchdown to round out the Cowboy scoring. Defensive standouts Zach Deegan, Jack Meagher and Danny Nuber held the Packers to only two scores.

The Packer offense was again lead by QB John Boyd, who connected on two touchdown passes to brother Mark and Joe Penczak.

49ers 12, Giants 6

Offensive standout Marc Dowling scored twice for the 49ers on passes from Scott Dyer and Sean Sullivan as the 49ers held on to outpace the Giants. The 49er defense lead by Thomas Moore and Brian Checchio, along with the Melillo brothers Danny and Mike, contained the Giants all day holding them to just one score.

The Giants lone touchdown came on a perfect pass from QB Jimmy Arbes to Joe Simone. The Giants defense of Eddie Kane, John Dugan and Danny Kehler kept the 49er running game in check, thwarting several drives.

The game remained tied into the second overtime when Susan Hinds sealed the victory with a quick kick inside the sixyard box. The Blue Devils finished with a strong 1111 record.

SP 30+ Basketball League Results:

The Scotch Plains Men’s 30+ Basketball League opened the season with some big matchups. Last year’s regular season champions, Swan Motel, won, 6243. John Krotulis and John Sullivan led the scoring for the win. Chris Freer’s Blazers were led by Chris Asianian and new addition, Jack Baldwin. Both teams are hoping to be battling for the title in 2000.

Basketball Jones lost a very hardfought game to C& C. Pete Costello and Kevin Coupe were on the attack for Basketball Jones, but came up short. C& C, after a disappointing loss in last year’s playoffs, is seeking its first title. Peter Chemidlin’s Investors, led by Glock and Vali offensively, handled David Rosenberg’s short staffed team, Shootin’ and Lootin’, 8357. Paperchase started their season with fireworks beating Soup Campbell’s squad. Jason Green led Campbell’s in the losing effort.
