fensive, directionchanging kicks. Then, with less than seven minutes remaining, a scramble in front of the Devil goal resulted in a tap in by Raider Andrew Babicz.
Regulation came to a close and the overtime period featured an offensive fury. Three minutes into the overtime, Rapuano launched a shot which was batted down by Lowyns. Rapuano reacted quickly and followed up with his second goal.
Soon after, Raider Mike Zotti was seemingly tripped in the Devil box and a disputed penalty kick ensued. Ferrara took the shot and skidded it into the lower right side to tie the score. Rapuano then responded with his third goal to give the Devils the lead.
As the darkness set in, more controversy began. Rapuano took a free kick and, to some, the ball appeared
to sink into the upper right corner for a goal. But, the referee claimed that the ball skimmed the football crossbar before entering.
“We looked at the tapes and the ball looked like it was in,” claimed a dejected Rapuano on the following day. “We should have won.”
“After seeing the film, it was not a goal,” said Blue Devil Head Coach George Kapner. “But, it was definitely not a penalty (referring to the Ferrara penalty kick).”
Moments later, Raider Dave Bell took a free kick from about 28 yards out on the left side and sailed it over Schoenemann’s head and into the
upper center for the tie. Shortly afterwards, the game was called due to darkness. Although the mystery remains in the minds of some and the opinions may vary, the Raiders finished with a 1453 record and the Blue Devils finished with a 1082 record.

somebody would tell me. I turned around to talk to a couple on the bench. The next thing I knew, the ball was going into the back of the net. I guess the outside half slipped it through and the ball took a bounce.”
An additional goal was averted moments later when Meglauglin was forced to charge an oncoming Ram again. The shot sailed over her head but an alert Larson headbutted it away.
Late in the second half, freshman Susan Williams’ inclusion appeared to provide some quickness and sting that the Blue Devils needed. First, Donna Schaller, from the center, crossed left to Alex Lee who then sent a shot just wide to the right. Seconds later, Williams lifted a center shot just over the crossbar. Then on a breakaway, Williams burned a shot off the charging goalie’s fingertips. Finally, she followed up on the left and fired again into the arms of the goalie.
“She did a fine job. She has a wonderful four years ahead of her,”
commented Giordano of Williams. Summing his season, Giordino pointed out, “We did better than some people thought we would. This team has played with a lot of heart all year. They had a lot of guts and spunk. We lost only three times and we tied East Brunswick, Cranford and Randolph.”
The Blue Devils completed their season with a 1433 record while Randolph improved to 1921.

CARAVELLO RETAINS TITLE ON BARS
Devil Gymnasts Take Second in NJ State By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
The Westfield High School gymnastics team at 108.875 finished second only to the Marlboro girls who totaled 109.75 in the NJSIAA tournament held in Old Bridge on November 12. Sophomore Lauren Caravello became the only gymnast from last year to repeat when she successfully defended her title on the uneven bars, totaling 9.55.
There was a shaky moment when the Blue Devils were erroneously announced as finishing fifth. “We just about had a heart attack when they announced us as fifth,” commented Head Coach Ellen Kovac. “We knew what our total was and a lot of people have left before they announced our score.”
Last year, Caravello scored slightly higher on the bars with a 9.6. “In my opinion, I thought that Lauren had a stronger bar routine this year,” expressed Kovac. “The scoring was not as generous.”
Caravello’s consistency in every event earned her a tie for second in the allaround with Jayne Propert of St. Rose with a total of 36.975. Kim Kirzow of Monmouth Regional placed first at 37.65. Caravello also tied for fourth with Christina Carpenter of Red Bank Catholic on the balance beam with a 9.325. On the floor exercises, she had a mark of 9.1 and in the vault marked at 9.0.
Freshman Ashley Flood came on strong, scoring a personalbest 36.075 in the allaround, and broke into the topten on the unevens, tying for eighth with a score of 9.125. Flood also poured it on with a floor score of 9.05 and a vaulting score of 8.9.
“Ashley added a doubleback flyaway on the bars and did a Tsukahara on the vault for the first time,” said Kovac.
Jessica Caravello did very well with scores of 9.25 on the floor and 8.8 on the bars. She scored 9.05 on the beam despite having a fall.
“For the team, it was a good beam day but, based on her score, Jessica’s fall may have cost her first,” pointed out Kovac. “So, you can see how
strong her routine really is. She should be very proud.”
Sophomore Christina Massa scored an 8.85 on the vault and 8.6 on the floor and freshman Rachel Skolnick was very strong on the uneven bars.”
“We had a great meet. All of our girls did great,” pointed out Kovac. “The two who were most improved were Ashley and Christina.”
The Blue Devils’ team total was their thirdhighest total ever. Kovac concluded, “It was a very, very nice score for the team. There were no giveaway scores and the field was crowded with excellent gymnasts.”
WICKS NETS SOLE GOAL ON ASSIST FROM CORBETT
Swift Pburg State Liners Ice Blue Devils, 41, in Sections
By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
Speed and accuracy spelled victory for the fourthseeded Phillipsburg High School field hockey team as they iced the topseeded Blue Devil girls, 41, in the semifinals of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 Tournament in Westfield on November 10. Senior Valerie Wicks netted the only Blue Devil goal off an assist from senior Paige Corbett.
Team speed, reacting to the ball and passing accuracy dictates dominance and the Liners held the edge throughout the game.
“I thought that Phillipsburg had more speed than us and I thought that they were better skilled today,” pointed out Blue Devil Head Coach Maggie McFadden. “It’s a hard thing to figure out. They may have been on, but I thought that we were off today.
The message was sent early to the Blue Devils as the State Liners mounted a vicious assault and never let up until Jen Czar, on an assist
from Kristen Potts, ripped in the first goal from pointblank range with just 5: 41 off the clock. During that time, the Liners had four penalty corners and the aggressive defensive play of Corbett helped to soften the load on goalie Jen Woodbury.
The Blue Devils began attacking the ball and finally penetrated Liner
turf 10 minutes in to the game, where
Kristen Leonardis banged a shot
wide left. Moments later, a Wicks to
Leonardis to Katy Onishi attack was repelled. Then, with 11: 40 remaining in the half, Corbett set up Wicks for her tying goal.
The State Liners responded and once again Woodbury earned her keep as she rejected shotaftershot. Then, just before the half, the Liners got another penalty corner. After a pass from Potts, Courtney
Garrison deflected a shot off a Devil defender and into the net to put the State Liners in front, 21.
No time was wasted by the Liners in the second half as Taryn Geleta, on an assist from Garrison, stung the net with just 1: 07 off the clock. Then, with 10: 56 left in the game, State Liner Liz Corso passed to Julie Henshaw who ripped the net for the final score.
“I thought that they (Blue Devils) could have done things differently,” said McFadden. “I tried to get them to pass. I wanted them to attack the ball more. We were backing up and we did not do much to clear the ball out of our circle.”
Phillipsburg had 13 penalty corners to Westfield’s five and outshot the Blue Devils, 202. Westfield finished its season at 1441 while Phillipsburg improved to 1741.
“Phillipsburg played great,” commented McFadden. “I don’t know if they were a better team, but their kids came out and played hard. We could not get the ball upfield. But, good teams will do that to you and Phillipsburg is a good team. I knew that coming in that they were going to be the team to beat. We would have to play our game to beat them. We just did not create the opportunities that we have in the past. They outplayed us.”
