Science Workshop Slated for Nov. 20 For Area Teachers

WESTFIELD — A “Clean Air Challenge” workshop will be held for middle and high school science teachers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 20, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Beadleston High School, 1571 Lamberts Mill Road.

This workshop will provide teachers with science content and skills they can use in addressing current state GEPA (Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment) and HSPA (High School Proficiency Assessment) testing concerns.

According to Nina ViscontiPhillips, Regional Coordinator for Clean Air Challenge, the workshop will highlight how various scientific disciplines can be applied to solving real-life problems, such as the ground level ozone problem. Such applications are promoted in the state testing.

Participants will take a look at the science behind and the issues surrounding the ozone problem and learn techniques for examining this major environmental hazard with their students.

Clean Air Challenge workshops are being offered free of charge to middle and high school science teachers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania as part of a five-year education outreach initiative sponsored by the Exxon Education Foundation.

Hosts are being sought for the Clean Air Challenge program and there is no fee to host a workshop. Teachers receive a $50 stipend and the Clean Air Challenge kit, valued at $240, is provided free to workshop participants.

Congresswoman McCarthy To Speak at Summit Church

SUMMIT – Long Island Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy will speak on “Changing the Agenda” at the Resource Center for Women, located in the parish house of the Calvary Episcopal Church in Summit, on Tuesday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m.

Her discussion will launch a yearlong lecture series entitled “Election 2000: Making a Difference for Women.”

The series will focus on political issues that will impact the lives of women and their families into the next century and on ways women can educate themselves and their elected officials regarding these issues.

Congresswoman McCarthy will speak about her personal experience and the ways individual women can have an impact on the political process.

After her husband was killed and her son injured in 1993 by a gunman who opened fire on a crowded Long Island commuter train, she became a vocal advocate for commonsense laws to reduce gun violence.

Elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1996, Congresswoman McCarthy has worked to address what she believes are the root causes of violence. She has also championed healthcare reform and protecting women’s interests in Social Security reform.

This lecture series is sponsored by the Resource Center for Women, the Older Women’s League, Summit Business and Professional Women, the Summit College Club and the Morris County Chapter of the National Organization for Women.

The church is located at 31 Woodland Avenue at the corner of DeForest Avenue in downtown Summit. Admission is $10, and $5 for students and those on a limited income.

Advance registration is suggested since space is limited. Free parking is available in the municipal lot on the opposite side of DeForest Avenue.

For information and directions, please call (908) 273-7253 or visit the Center’s Web site at members.aol.com/rcfw.
