HERRMANN, VOESSLER, FRANZONE LEAD OFFENSE
Raider Nine Finish Season, Defeating Crusaders, 8-5 By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
Going out a winner was just what the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School baseball team did when they stopped A. L. Johnson, 8-5, in Clark on May 20. Junior Dave Herrmann and seniors Joe Franzone and Kevin Voessler provided the offensive edge as they combined for eight hits and five RBI.
Raider Dan Goehry led off the top of the first and sliced the ball to right field. Crusader Jason Navarro made a great diving catch for the first out. Voessler skid a grounder under the first baseman Dave Corby’s glove, then Tom Pai popped out to left. Joe Franzone hopped a single up-themiddle, then Dave Herrmann skid an RBI single past third to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Raider pitcher Kevin Schenk made easy work of the Crusaders in the bottom of the inning, allowing only a
walk to Dave D’Antonio. Crusader pitcher Dave Freitas followed suit in the second by allowing only a walk to Raider Ryan Hahner.
The Crusaders grabbed the lead with two runs in the second. Corby hit a chopper to short, but the throw to first was slightly off course. Rudy Duanno plopped a single to shallow right and Frank Saluccio walked to load the bases, then Chris Barnhart ripped a two-RBI single past second.
The Raiders unloaded their offensive arsenal in the third. Voessler hacked the ball to second and beat out the throw after the second baseman temporarily baubled it. Tim Pai sizzled a single off the glove of the pitcher and Franzone poked an RBI single to right and moved to second on the throw to home. Herrmann drilled a two-run single up the middle to give the Raiders a 4-2 lead.
The battering continued when Schenk tapped an RBI single to center, Ed Jackson reached first on an error, then Hahner walked to load the bases. After Goehry grounded out, the Crusader first baseman attempted to throw out the runner heading to third but the ball sailed out of play and two more runs scored. Voessler made the score 8-2 with an RBI double to left-center.
The Crusaders added a run in the third, then picked up their final two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Two walks, a single from Barnhart and two Raider errors on infield grounders accounted for the final runs.
Herrmann finished with three hits and three RBI, Voessler had two hits
Lauren Salvaggio beat out an infield single and drove in Laura Johnston with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cranford High School softball team edged the Westfield girls, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the North 2, Group 3 tournament in Cranford on May 20.
No runs crossed the plate until the fourth when senior Liz McKeon whacked a double to bring Kristen Leonardis who doubled earlier. Senior Sue Phillips singled in McKeon, then later, sophomore Courtney
Thornton poked a single and later scored on a throwing error to give the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars growled back in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Salvaggio plunked a single to left field, Sam Morano ripped a single to center, then JoAnne DeVito drilled a two-run double down the left field line.
The fateful inning arrived. Jessica Carscadden punched a single up-themiddle, Johnston skid a bunt single, then Lyndsey Pfeiffer advanced both runners on a ground out. Megan Zambell’s infield single brought home Carscadden for the tie, then Salvaggio’s infield single iced the victory.
The Cougars boosted their record to 16-5 advanced to play Governor Livingston in the semifinals. Westfield slid to 14-10.
