Patrick J. Duggan, Jr., 57, Math Professor At DeVry Institute; Bell Atlantic Manager

Patrick J. Duggan, Jr., 57, of Westfield died on Saturday, May 22, at home.

Born in Kearny, he had lived in Newark before moving to Westfield in 1972.

Mr. Duggan was employed with the DeVry Institute in North Brunswick from 1996 to 1998 as an Assistant Mathematics Professor. Previously, he had been a district manager with Bell Atlantic at various locations in New Jersey for 26 years before retiring in 1995.

He was a lector at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.

He served as a Captain in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Duggan graduated from Newark College of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1964. He received a master’s degree in mathematics from Seton Hall University in South Orange in 1994.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Marie Elward Duggan; his mother, Mary Gallagher Duggan of South Belmar; three sons, Patrick Duggan, 3rd, of Chatham Brian Duggan of Westfield and Sean Duggan of Manhattan; a brother, John Duggan of Spring Lake, and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 24, in St.

Helen’s Church in Westfield. Burial took place on Tuesday, May 25, at Fairview Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made either to the Center for Hope Hospice, 176 Hussa Street, Linden, 07036, or to the Westfield Memorial Library.

Herman Tucker, 68, Active in Church Past Master of Mt. Horeb Lodge No. 9

Herman Tucker, 68, of Fanwood died on Monday, May 17, in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Alberta, Virginia on January 10, 1931, he was the son of the late Lem and Mattie Tucker. He had lived in Westfield and Newark before moving to Fanwood in 1976.

Mr. Tucker had been employed by A&N Landscaping in Westfield before retiring. He was previously employed by the Hyatt Roller Bearing Division of General Motors in Clark for more than 32 years.

After moving to New Jersey, he joined the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield and later became a member of the Philemon Missionary Baptist Church in Newark, where he had served on the Usher Board and sang with the Male Chorus.

He was also a member and Past Master of Mt. Horeb Lodge No. 9 of

Free and Accepted Masons, and a member of the Holy Temple No. 4, the Royal Arch Masons, the Hiriam Commandery No. 17, the Moohab Grand Consistory, the Knights Templar, and the Morocco Temple No. 1 A.A.O.N.O.M.S.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in 1991 by his wife, Lucille Harris, whom he married in 1955.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Yancey and Yvonne Richards; two sisters, Helen Graves and Alice Proctor, and two grandchildren.

Services were held on Friday, May 21, at the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in Westfield and at the Philemon Baptist Church. Masonic Rights and additional services were held at the church on Saturday, May 22. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Julian C. Dowell, 85, Freelance Illustrator; Spent 50 Years in the Advertising Field

Julian C. Dowell, 85, of Westfield died on Tuesday, May 18, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1913, he grew up in Riverside, Illinois and moved to Westfield in 1951.

A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, Mr. Dowell later moved to New York, where he began a 50year career in advertising. By age 29 he was the youngest senior art director in New York, working for Sherman Marquette Advertising.

In 1985, after working for numerous firms, he left Doyle Dane Birnbach but continued to draw storyboards as a freelance illustrator for 10 more years before retiring five years ago.

Surviving are his wife, Lucinda Huff Dowell; three sons, William Dowell, Jonathan Dowell and Jeremy Dowell; two daughters, Christina Fleur and Sabina Wendell, and four grandsons.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 13, at 1 p.m. in the First Congregational Church in

Westfield. Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Multiple Sclerosis National Society.

Mary Colapietro, 70

Mary Colapietro, 70, of Garwood died on Friday, May 21, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Westfield and Garwood for many years.

Miss Colapietro had worked for 40 years in various positions at Woolworth’s in New York and New Jersey before retiring 14 years ago.

Surviving are her brother, Thomas Colapietro, and two sisters, Christine Materia and Madeline Ayres.

A Mass was offered on Tuesday, May 25, in St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Garwood.

Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Ruth F. Mariano, 76

Ruth F. Mariano, 76, of Fanwood died on Wednesday, May 19, at home.

Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Plainfield before moving to Fanwood 30 years ago.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph Mariano; a son, Thomas J. Mariano of Whitehouse Station; a brother, Joseph Giordano of Sun City, Florida, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Alfred Lovell, Sr., 67, Navy Veteran; Chemist at Merck & Co. in Rahway

Alfred Vincent Lovell, Sr., 67, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, May 18, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Staten Island, he had lived in Brooklyn and in Roselle before moving to Scotch Plains 25 years ago.

Mr. Lovell had been a chemist at Merck & Company in Rahway for more than 30 years before retiring 10 years ago.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and the New Jersey Football Officials Association.

He served in the United States Navy during peacetime and in the

Navy Reserve during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Lovell earned a bachelor’s degree in science from Brooklyn College.

Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Lovell; two sons, Alfred Lovell, Jr. and Gerard Lovell; a brother, John Lovell; a sister, Linda Mull, and a grandchild.

A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, May 24, in St. John Baptist Church in Scotch Plains.

Peter von Nessi, 81, Awarded Bronze Star; Owned Newark Firm for Over 40 Years

Peter von Nessi, 81, of Mountainside died on Saturday, May 22, in the Manor Care Nursing Center in Mountainside.

Born in Newark, he had lived in Roselle Park before moving to Mountainside in 1954.

Mr. von Nessi had owned Central Warehouse and Transportation in Newark for more than 40 years before retiring as President in 1981.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Bronze Star.

Mr. von Nessi received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Rutgers University in 1947.

Surviving are two sons, Peter P. von Nessi, Jr. and Gregory von Nessi, Sr.; a daughter, Karen Vega; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, May 26, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside, following the funeral from the McCracken Funeral Home in Union.

Patrick Del Negro, 70, Local Parishioner; Retired Clerk With Lucent Technologies

Patrick Del Negro, 70, a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains, died on Friday, May 21, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Mr. Del Negro had been a clerk for Lucent Technologies in Piscataway for many years before retiring in 1990.

He was a communicant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.

Surviving are a brother, Joseph Del Negro of West Creek, and two

sisters, Mary DiQuollo and Edith Rapoano, both of Scotch Plains.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 24, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung, followed by a Mass at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Entombment was held at the Good Shepherd Mausoleum in Colonia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad.

Robert Potts, 51, Construction Employee; Also Worked for County Road Dept.

Robert Darryl Potts, 51, of Broadheadsville, Pennsylvania, died on Tuesday, May 18, at home.

Born in Harlem, New York City, he had lived in Plainfield before moving to Broadheadsville several years ago.

Mr. Potts was a construction worker in New York for over 10 years. He also worked for the Union County Road Department in Fanwood for several years.

He had attended Plainfield schools.

He was predeceased by his parents, Hiram Potts and Ruth PottsThomas; a sister, Doris Potts Osley,

and a brother, Alvin Potts. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Potts; three sons, Gerard Potts, Darryl Potts and Emerson Potts; a daughter, Nicolette Potts; four stepchildren, Gillian, Gail, Gena and Glenn Patrick; four brothers, Larry Potts, Louis Potts, Jeffrey Potts and Cary Potts; four sisters, Barbara Potts-Bowens, Sheilah PottsHamlette, Michelle Potts and Carla Potts-Johnson; a stepsister, Adrian Lake of Scotch Plains, and a stepbrother, William Lake of Oregon.

A funeral was held on Friday, May 21, in Pennsylvania.

Nickolas DiQuollo, Sr., 81, Army Veteran; Was Carpenter at Scotch Plains Company

Nickolas A. DiQuollo, Sr., 81, a lifelong Scotch Plains resident, died on Wednesday, May 19, at home.

Mr. DiQuollo had been a carpenter with Graybar Construction in Scotch Plains for 25 years before retiring in 1979.

He was a Master Sergeant with the United States Army in the Philippines during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Mary M. DelNegro DiQuollo; three sons, Nickolas A. DiQuollo, Jr. of Fanwood and Dominick P. DiQuollo

and Eugene DiQuollo, both of Scotch Plains; a daughter, Arlene Podesla of Bridgewater; a sister, Laura Checchio of Scotch Plains; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 325, Scotch Plains, 07076.

Graveside Memorial Service Planned For Florence Van Wyck Lott Freeman

to 1948, and a member of the Executive Board of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs from 1948 to 1951.

She additionally served as State Chairwoman of Literature from 1960 to 1962, and as President of the Senior Auxiliary to Children’s Specialized Hospital, also from 1960 to 1962. She was a member of various committees of the Westfield Woman’s Club, and for many years was Chairwoman of the Endowment Fund.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, J. Russell Freeman.

Surviving are three daughters, Florence Rom of Point Pleasant, Anne Russell of Le Sueur, Minnesota, and Peggy Dunlap of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; seven grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to The Presbyterian Church in Westfield or to a recipient of one’s choice.

Robert H. Johnson, 86, Senior Deacon; Construction Worker for Many Years

Robert H. Johnson, 86, of Linden died on Monday, May 17, in Rahway Hospital.

Born in Scotch Plains, he had lived in Cranford before moving to Linden.

Mr. Johnson was a senior deacon, preacher, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, as well as a member of the Prayer Band, choir and Brotherhood in the Refuge Church in Plainfield. He also served as President of the Deacon Board.

He had been a construction worker with DiOrio and DiOrio in Scotch Plains, and later with the City of

Linden, for many years before retiring in 1979.

Surviving are six daughters, Barbara L. Fair, Christina L. Johnson, Bessie E. Johnson, Lynda M. Alexander, Lauria J. Betts and Esther L. Davis; a son, Wayne A. Johnson; an adopted daughter, Inez Broner; two sisters, Lola Irby and Catherine Irby; 22 grandchildren and 19 greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 21, in the Refuge Church.

Arrangements were handled by the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.

A Graveside Memorial service for Florence Van Wyck Lott Freeman, 94, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who died on Saturday, March 20, in the Oaks Nursing Center in Winston-Salem, will be held on Friday, June 4, at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Born in Elizabeth on June 3, 1904, the daughter of the late Florence and Van Wyck Lott, she was a descendant of early Dutch settlers on Long Island.

She graduated from Battin High School in Elizabeth in 1921, and from Barnard College of Columbia University in 1925.

Mrs. Freeman was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield and its Woman’s Association for over 50 years, the Westfield Woman’s Club, the College Woman’s Club, the Republican Woman’s Club, and the Auxiliary to Children’s Specialized Hospital.

She was President of the Woodrow Wilson Parent Teacher Association from 1943 to 1945; President of the Westfield Woman’s Club from 1946

Helen J. Romano, 76, Former Secretary; Member of Multiple Sclerosis Association

Helen J. Romano, 76, of Green Brook died on Monday, May 24, at the Green Brook Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Green Brook.

Born in New York City, she had lived in Plainfield and Middlesex before moving to Green Brook two years ago.

Miss Romano was a secretary for her late brother, Dr. Frank R. Romano, Sr. in Dunellen before retiring 24 years ago.

She was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Association, the Opera Guild of Middlesex and Friends of the Library in Middlesex.

She was a communicant of St. Bernard’s Church in Plainfield.

Besides her brother, she was predeceased by her parents, Angeline

and Joseph Romano, and a sister, Rose Artale.

Surviving are a sister, Mildred Sabatello of Scotch Plains, and a brother, Thomas J. Romano of Green Brook.

A Funeral Mass will be held today, Thursday, May 27, at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard’s Church in Plainfield, following a funeral service from the Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield at 9:15 a.m. Entombment will be at Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge following the Funeral Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mid-Jersey Chapter, 801 Belmar Plaza, Belmar, 07719.

Earned Awards in Drawing Competitions Agnes Strenkert, 95, Legal Secretary;

Active Member of Holy Trinity Church

Agnes K. Strenkert, 95, of Westfield died on Monday, May 24, at the Genesis Elder Care Center in Westfield.

Born and raised in Jersey City, she had lived in Westfield since 1923.

Ms. Strenkert was a legal secretary for the Alcohol Beverage Central Board of the State of New Jersey for 40 years before retiring in 1971.

She was an active member of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, where she was a lecturer, Eucharistic Minister, choir member and a member of the senior group. She was also a member of the Catho

lic Daughters of America. She had received the Jubilee Medal Pro Meritis in 1994 for distinguished service in the Archdiocese of Newark.

Surviving is a nephew, Francis Edmund Flanagan, of Springfield, Virginia.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held today, Thursday, May 27, at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church.

Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.

Katherine Sennett, 83, of Westfield died Saturday, May 1, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in New York City, she had lived in Westfield for 53 years.

Mrs. Sennett was a Girl Scout Troop Leader in Westfield and the Past President of “The Club of Little Gardens” also in Westfield. She was Vice President of the Extension Club and a volunteer sewing instructor at the YMCA.

She was awarded the Haney Medal by the School of Art League of New York City, the John Wanamaker Drawing Competition

medal and won the Humane Poster Contest.

She had attended City College in New York where she studied art.

She was predeceased by her husband Walter Sennett, in 1982.

Surviving are a son, a daughter and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were private. Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.

Memorial donations may be made to the Westfield Rescue Squad, Watterson Place, Westfield.
