Westfield Soccer Presents Annual Westfield Cup

Nearly 1,800 players, including some of the best youth soccer teams from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, will compete Memorial Day weekend (May 29-31) for the first place trophy of the 19th edition of the Westfield Cup. The lead sponsor of the event which kicks off at 9 a.m. Saturday is Zachary Jackson, a financial services firm, specializing in investments, mortgages and insurance headquartered in Springfield.

The 1999 Westfield Cup features one of the largest fields ever with each of the six age divisions for both boys and girls offering tough competition. On 15 fields throughout Westfield and in neighboring Cranford the players will be demonstrating their talents, trying to be proclaimed the best in albeit individual divisions.

From the opening whistle when the dreams of victory accompany each team onto the playing fields until the final awards ceremony for the 11 victorious first-place finishers on Monday afternoon, the players will be displaying some of the best soccer around.

Mike Melino and Tom Maher, who co-chaired this years event, attribute the impressive field of 105 teams to the solid reputation the Westfield tournament enjoys in the soccer community. In addition to the tournaments’ long-standing tradition, the quality of the games and the professionalism of the operation has attracted attention far beyond New Jersey, enabling tournament organizers to re

cruit teams from several states. The hundreds of games comprising the competition will be staged. Edison Intermediate School will serve as headquarters where results of all games will be posted and standings within each division listed.

Unlike many other tournaments, the Westfield Cup has three paid referees for each game, with one handling the field action and two acting as linesmen. Each field also has a clearly identifiable manager who is available to deal with any problems or emergencies.

The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad will also be on standby to handle any injuries.

The Westfield Cup employs the World Cup structure, having teams play round robin in each division on Saturday and Sunday with points awarded for a win or a tie. The field is narrowed to the twobest teams when they face each other in the championship games on Monday.

The Westfield Cup includes a core committee of 21 individuals who have been working since January to ensure the tournament’s success. Lead sponsor Zachary Jackson will have an information booth at the event. J&M Markets is once again providing the catering for the tournament.

The Soccer Post will be providing vending support. As the competition begins Saturday, the ranks of volunteers will swell considerably as mothers, fathers and friends donate their time to make the Cup possible.

SPF Strikers Stop Soccer Vipers, 4-0

The SPF Strikers U9 inter city team defeated the Westfield Vipers 4-0 on April 25. Rob Cunningham led the Striker charge with a great header, followed by a shot on goal. Westfield countered, but goalie Taylor Molinaro made a great save. Tim Stuart demonstrated solid skills on offense and Brandon Reddington played great defense. Michael DeVizio made a great pass to Tyler Stanek who made a beautiful shot on the Viper goal.

In the second quarter, Eddie Kahn took advantage of a gap in the Viper defense and scored to make it 1-0. Tommy Sutter, made an outstanding defensive play by jumping up and blocking a shot with his chest. Westfield tried to counter but goalie Jeff Stuart made a terrific save.

Ryan Krueger resumed the Striker offensive with a shot onto the Viper goal. DeVizio scored off a corner-kick. to make it 2-0. Timmy Leischner moved downfield and fed the ball to Daniel LiVolsi who scored to make it 3-0.

In the third quarter, Jeff Stuart made a great pass to DeVizio whose shot was rejected. Cunningham followed with another attempt. In the fourth quarter, goalie Reddington kept the Vipers scoreless. Krueger continued the offensive effort and LiVolsi and Kahn combined to score and make it 4-0.

Soccer Killer Bees Dazzle U-12 W. Windsor Comets

The Westfield Killer Bees avenged an early season loss by downing the West Windsor Comets, 2-0, on May 16. It was a match up of two teams tied in their flight.

From the opening kick-off the Killer Bees put pressure on the Comets. Jessie Elkoury and Justine Palme brought the ball up field and then crossed the ball into the six-yard box. Stephanie Bridgeman and Ann Siwulec added several shots on goal during the quarter, but the Comet defense held.

The Comets made several attempts to break through with long passes to their striker, but stopper Aly Carter fought with great intensity to win back the ball. The Bees consistently shut down the Comets’ fast break. Fullback, Marykate Maher displayed her impressive talents by delaying and containing the right wing. Amanda Dickson stymied the left wing, first blocking any advance and then stealing the ball.

In the second quarter, Lauren Purdy and Caroline Cariste moved the ball up the right

until Cariste saw Carter open in the middle and delivered a perfect pass. From 25-yards out, Carter sent a thrilling shot over the keeper and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Bees’ tight defense was too much for the Comets. Sarah Hansen repeatedly won one-on-one confrontations by pushing the ball into open space and making smart, crisp passes. Jenna Federgreen used series of quick turns and pullbacks until she could unleash a long pass up to the left wing.

With only minutes left, the Comets pressed hard for a tie, but defenders Gio Palatucci, Emily MacNeil, Maher, and Palme were impenetrable. Feddergreen, Carter and Amanda Dickson succeeded in pressuring the Comets. Cariste on an assist from Melissa Rosen, found the net just before colliding with the Comet keeper. The victory was Killer Bees’ fifth shutout in a row.

Honor From Freeholders

Winning is something that the Westfield Girls Swim Team does, often. With seven years of state and county championships under their belts and a slate of almost all underclassman, Coach Bev Torok’s team is the one to beat.

Union County Freeholder Mary P. Ruotolo presented resolutions to each swimmer, congratulating them on their winning season during a recent public meeting of the Board of Chosen Freeholders.

“Swimming is a difficult sport that relies on a great deal of commitment, dedication, practice and skill. You must be out there daily working to improve. I commend Coach Torok and the team for having what it takes to produce a winning team, seven years running,” Freeholder Ruotolo said.

Union County Freeholder Chairman Nicholas P. Scutari said, “These young people have learned that you can achieve great things if you are motivated.”

The members of the swim team include: Megan Brown, Christina DaCosta,

Jennifer Chiesa, Meghann McMahon, Abbey Coxson, Jesse Coxson, Cathy Curran, Chelsea Doyle, Bethany Dresely, Tyne Duffy, Sara Beth Euwer, Lindsay Guerriero, Kerry Hart, Nichole Herttua, Stephanie Kolterjohn, Meghan McDonald, Kristen Ostrega, Jane Anderson, Megan Beck, Tara Christakos, Rachel Falcone, Chrissy Kolenut, Ann Marie Nason, Erin Reed, Kristina Barabas, Kitty Fromtling, Ashley Saul, Krissy Schwebel, Crissy Romano and Katie Bartholomew.

In addition, Coach Torok was recognized for being chosen the Star-Ledger’s

Coach of the year and received a resolution for her leadership that helped the team complete seven winning years.

Coach Torok said that it is wonderful to win but “those victories are even sweeter when you are recognized for them outside of the school, and especially by the County’s Governing Board.”

SPF Jazz Tie Soccer Rascals; Defeat E. Brunswick Panthers

The Scotch Plains Fanwood Jazz girls soccer team earned a 2-2 tie against the Rolling Hills Rascals in a make-up game on May 14 and held off the East Brunswick Panthers with a 2-1 victory on May 16. The Jazz upped their record to 5-2-2.

Against the Rascals, the Jazz broke out to a early 1-0 lead when Lauren Hercel rocketed a shot from 16 feet out that caught the upper right-hand corner of the net. Soon after that Jessica Churgin battled for a lose ball and then directed a pass to the middle of the field where Maddie Wasser teed up a shot and buried the ball into the lower left corner giving the Jazz a 2-0 lead.

In the second half Rolling Hills came back to cut the lead in half despite an heroic effort by defender Katie Van Haasteren. A goal in the final seconds by the Rascals knotted the game at 2-2.

Against the Panthers, the first half was scoreless despite some exciting offense by

the Jazz. Hallie Mintz went coast-to-coast but her shot curved just wide. Bitsy Kipping sent a clearing pass to Jess McGarry who fired a shot that sailed two inches over the cross bar. Later, Meaghan Kelly’s shot was grabbed by the Panther goalie.

Early in the second half, the Jazz broke in front when Gaby Falco and Shannon Hauser brought the ball up on the left side. Hauser then found Lauren Mains with a perfect pass. Mains scored.

Mid-way in the second half Hauser knocked in the second goal by deflecting a super corner kick by Hercel. Minutes later, Lindsey Fitzgerald’s blistering shot clanged off the far post. The Panther’s came back with a fast break, but Briana Falco ran down the streaking East Brunswick player and steered the ball out of harm’s way to preserve the victory.

SPF Spartans Stop PeeWee Bulls, 14-13

The Bulls and the Spartans of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Youth Baseball Association Pee Wee Division faced off against each other in an exciting and close game that was eventually won by the Spartans, 14-13, on May 15. The final outcome went down to the last batter in the last inning.

The Spartan bats were on fire as they pounded out 29 hits. Leading the offensive attack were Steven Berger, Alex Ebeling and Huan Nguyen. Offensively, for the Bulls, Blake Van Buskirk and Kevin Regan were a perfect 4-for-4 on the day. Ricky Madurski, Chris Bauer and James Wheeler all chipped in with 3-for-4 days with Madurski hitting a double and Wheeler stroking a two-run triple in the final inning. Jonathan Kosenick also added to the last inning drama with a solo home run on a 2-for4 day. Ryan Dessert and Matt Graziano also collected two hits on the day.

Defensively, there were plenty of gems. For the Spartans, Billy Buckland, John Domanski and Andrew Monroe were spectacular in the field. The Bulls were lead defensively by Dessert who had five putouts including an unassisted double play. Rebecca Kaplan, Ryan Keavney and Gailmarie Sprague also chipped in with putouts on the day.
