Raider Boys ‘3-Peat’; Win Union County Track Title
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13
Raider Steve Cole took sixth at 11’. “I have been concentrating more on holding out the pole, driving out real hard and I am running a little faster than I have been,” said Ray of his accomplishment. “The sun was brutal and I really could not see the box until I was almost right on it.”
Cahill explained his success. “I am gripping higher on the pole now and I am now using a more flexible pole.”
Woodward had a marvelous leap in the long jump, tying his best ever with a distance of 23’5”. Chris Ganey of Union Catholic took third at 21’2” and Raider Nathan Jones was fourth at 21’1.75”. Jones also finished fourth in the 400-hurdles with a time of 57.4.
During the meet, Woodward who had been nursing an injured toe expressed, “ That is my best leap this season. My toe is feeling a lot better now and I am also feeling a lot better with my running.”
While winning his heat during the qualifying round of the 110-hurdles, Woodward gashed his knee on one of the hurdles. Despite the discomfort, Woodward was nosed out for first in the finals by Jameel Dumas of Roselle and finished second in 14.5. Woodward also cleared 6’6” to place second in the high jump behind Ottley Freeman of Plainfield who cleared 6’8”. Raider Derrion Aberdeen finished sixth with a height of 6 feet. Woodward also tied for fourth in the 200-meters with a time of 22.8.
Westfield High School senior Pete Anzelone exercised his dominance in the 800-meters as he out-kicked Dan Sobkowicz of Elizabeth and flew to a first in the event with a time of 2:00. Teammate John Cognetti finished fifth at 2:06.1.
As usual, the Raiders were influential in the shot put. Although not his best throw, Loomis easily grabbed first with a distance of 55’4.5”. Jim Feeley had a personal-best heave of 51’6.75 to place third and Scott Paterson placed fifth with a distance of 47’10”.
The placement in the discus event was decided on the final throws of champion ReJohn Baxter of Cranford and runner-up Mark Bullock of Roselle who had respective throws of 136’2” and 134’7”. Raider Dave Lasus took fourth in the discus with a toss of 131 feet, Loomis placed fifth at 130’2” and Paterson finished sixth at 127’11”
Using a slightly different strategy this time, Blue Devil Gordon Kaslusky finished third to Cranford sensation Tim Styler in the 1,600meters with a time of 4:32.4. Raider Andrew Elko finished sixth with a time of 4:40.5.
“That equals my best time. I like to think that I can go out there and do some damage. My goal is to get under 4:30 before I graduate,” said Kaslusky. “I kind of lost contact with Styler on the last 200-meters but I wasn’t worried about making third.”
The Raiders made a strong showing in the 3,200-meters with senior Josh Ricca taking third at 10:04.1, Nick Klastava coming in fourth at 10:05.4 and Bob Wallden, 3rd finishing sixth with a time of 10:21.2. The Blue Devils finished fourth in the 4x400-meters with a time of 3:30.6 and the Raiders finished sixth at 3:35.7.

Blue Devil senior Julie Elmuccio, who seemed to be having a good time, turned in two very fine performances, finishing second in the long jump with a distance of 16’6” and sixth in the 100-hurdles with a time of 16.6. In the qualifying round of the long jump, Elmuccio soared a personal-best 16’4” then went on to leap her 16’6” in the finals.
Prior to the finals, Elmuccio said, “The jump I had (16’4”) does not carry over to the finals. It was the best that I did all season. I just hope that I can do that well in the finals.” She did!
With a great attitude, Elmuccio commented on how she handles the competition. “I go out there and have fun. I actually believe that it is a little funny. I actually enjoy discussing the events with our competition. And, we laugh about it.”
Raider Stacey Bushinger at 15’8.5” and Christina Hillman at 15’4.75 placed, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump. Lady Blue Devils Level Red Devil Laxers, 13-8
The Westfield High School girls lacrosse team were back in action against Ridge High School on May 13 in Westfield. Earlier this season Ridge edged the Blue Devils by one when they let their lead slip away in the second half but that was not the case this time as the Blue Devils won, 13-8.
Minutes after the opening draw, defensive ace Aubrey McGovern found paydirt for the first score. Her triumph was answered three times over the next two minutes as Ridge was not about to go away. The Red Devils took charge and maintained possession for the next several minutes. Devil goalie, Libby Schundler made several tough saves and received a little divine intervention as three shots hit the goal posts and bounced away.
With 13 minutes left in the first half, Kelsey Ill scored with a beautiful assist from second home Marina Powell. What happened next would bring a smile to even the sternest of coaches as Westfield resurrected themselves and began to play lacrosse. Kristen Salmond controlled the
draw and raced to goal to tie the game. Julia Gates scored 30 seconds later.
Morgan Lang then scored on a breakaway from the right side. Gates again controlled the draw and scored putting the Devils up by three. Eleven seconds later, Gates hit Powell who found an open Ill who scored the seventh goal. Ridge burned a timeout but the momentum was with the Devils. The Red Devils scored twice but Salmond scored two beautiful goals, making the score 9-5 at the half.
Jenny Korecky made her presence known as she scored within 30 seconds of the second half. A minute later Korecky scored her second goal. After calling a timeout, Ridge scored their sixth goal.
Salmond and Korecky both completed their hat tricks and Donna Schaller, Lauren Mattes, Katie Gildea, Liza Yannuzzi and McGovern the defensive backfield shut down the Ridge attack allowing only three goals in the second half as Westfield topped the .500 mark to go 7-6.
