– Obituaries – Willard Woodward, 84, Historian; Former Manager W. T. Grant, Co.

WillardN. Woodward,84,ofToms River, died on Monday, May 10, at Fountain View Care Center in Lakewood.

Born in Flushing, New York, he had lived in Westfield for 33 years beforemovingto TomsRiverin1988.

Mr.Woodward wasamanagerwith W. T. Grant, Company, Florham Park, before retiring in 1976.

He was active in several organizations, including the Mayflower Soci

ety, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Society of Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge, and Flagon and Trencher. He also belonged to the Genealogical Society of the West Fields and the New England Historical and Genealogical Society.

He was a member of the First Church of Christ the Scientist in Toms River.

He was a graduate of Colgate University.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 3rd Division of the US Army. He was awarded two bronze stars for heroism in ground combat.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Arelene Woodward.

Surviving are his wife of 11 years, Mary Ensley Woodward of Toms River, and his son, Newell Woodward, of Lake Mary, Florida.

A Memorial Service was held on Monday, May 17, at D’Elia Funeral Home, Route 70 & Vermont Avenue, Lakewood. Interment will be at The First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, Connecticut.

Mary Elizabeth Lamb, 50, Executive At Career Placement Service Companies

Mary Elizabeth Lamb, 50, of ConventStation diedonWednesday,May 12, at home.

Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Scotch Plains, Carmel, New York

and Fishkill, New York, before moving to Convent Station last year.

Ms. Lamb had been vice president of Manchester International in Parsippany. Previously, she had been a vice president of the Consumer Services Group of Citibank in New York City for 12 years.

In themid-1990’s,sheco-produced a weekly radio program for the Hudson Valley area of New York State, dealing with workplace trends and opportunities.

She had graduated cum laude from the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station in 1970. She was a “Who’s Who” outstanding woman graduate of the year.

Surviving are her mother, Elizabeth A. Lamb, of Scotch Plains; four brothers, William Lamb, of Phillipsburg, PatrickLambofSpringfield, Michael Lamb of Wayne, and Christopher Lamb, of Westfield.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 22, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Scotch Plains. Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.

Thelma L. Lomax, 66

Thelma Louise Lomax, 66, of Buena Vista, Virginia died on Monday, May 10, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Buena Vista.

Mrs. Lomax had been a professor and Alumni Director at Southern Seminary Junior College in Buena Vista before retiring.

She was a graduate of Southern Seminary Junior College, the Universityof NorthCarolinaandCornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Surviving are her husband, William B. Lomax, Jr.; a son, Thomas S. Lomax, and a daughter, Charlotte B. Lomax.

Graveside services were held at the Green Hill Cemetery in Buena Vista.

John Strube, 74, Former Union Mayor; Executive With Norton & Williams, Inc.

John R. Strube, 74, of Union Township, Hunterdon County, died on Wednesday, May 12, at home.

Born in Orange, he had lived in Westfield and Mountainside before moving to Union Township in 1973.

A member of the Union Township Committee for 13 years and the planning board for five years, Mr. Strube served four terms as Mayor of the township.

Mr. Strube was the vice president of sales and director of the export division at Norton & Williams Inc., Westfield, for 45 years.

Heservedin theArmyduringWorld War II and was a member of the North Hunterdon Lions Club.

Hewaspredeceased byhisson,Kurt Strube, in 1991.

Surviving are his wife, Arline Strube; two sons, Eric Strube, of Lavallette, and Paul Strube, of Union Township; twodaughters,CarolTittel, of Goshen, Kentucky, and Christine Strube, of Manahawkin; and three granddaughters.

A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, May 15, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lebanon Township.

Arrangements were handled by the Martin Funeral Home in Clinton.

Interment was held at the Lower Valley Cemetery in Califon.

Sophie Dunetz, 87

Sophie Dunetz, 87, of Westfield, died on Tuesday, May 11, at Rahway Hospital.

Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Newark before moving to Westfield five years ago.

Miss Dunetz was an executive controller for the Armel Ice Cream Co. in Newark for 60 years before retiring.

She was a member of the Union County CancerSociety,Hadassahand the Volunteers Association of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, all of Elizabeth.

Surviving is a brother, Nathan Dunetz.

Graveside services were held on Thursday,May13, atBethIsraelCemetery,Woodbridge.Arrangementswere handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.

Frank Fedowitz, 85, Served as Elder; Executive at A. Gross and Company

FrankFedowitz, 85,ofMaysLanding died on Saturday, May 15, in Mainland Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation in Pleasantville.

Born in Newark, he had lived in Scotch Plains for 40 years before moving to Mays Landing in 1989.

Mr. Fedowitz had been employed by A. Gross and Company of Newark, a division of Millmaster Onyx Corporation, for 45 years before retiring as Vice President of Production in 1974.

He was an elder of the Willow Grove PresbyterianChurchinScotch

Plains. Mr. Fedowitz earned a bachelor’s degree in 1940 and a master’s degree in 1943, both in chemical engineering, from New York University in New York City.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Fedowitz; a son, Frank Fedowitz, Jr. of Manassas, Virginia; a daughter, Andrea Hintze of Belle Mead; a sister, Ann LaPointe of Ramsey; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, May 19, from the Hillsborough Funeral Home in Belle Meade. Interment was at Neshanic Cemetery.

Doris A. Longaker, 86

Doris A. Longaker, 86, of Red Bank, died on Tuesday, May 11, at River View Medical Center in Red Bank.

Born in Newark, she had lived in Middletown and Cranford before moving to Red Bank where she resided for over 20 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, the Reverend Dr. Robert G. Longaker, past pastor of Cranford Presbyterian Church, in 1991.

Surviving are her sons, Robert Longaker, 2nd, of Westfield, and Leslie Longaker, of Rochester, New York; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 14, at First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill, Red Bank. Interment was at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown.

Arrangements were handled by John E. Day Funeral Home, Inc. in Red Bank.

Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church Connect Program at Tower Hill, 255 Harding Road, Red Bank, 07701.

Joseph Palac, 79

JosephPalac, 79,ofFanwood,died on Wednesday, May 12, in the Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Staten Island, he had lived in Elizabeth before moving to Fanwood in 1955.

Mr. Palac was a machine set-up man and die-cast foreman with the Diehl Manufacturing Co., Linden, where he had worked for 42 years before retiring 17 years ago.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Anastasia Palac; three daughters, Carol Reid, Barbara Swistock and Janet Siegel; three brothers, Walter Palac, Edward Palac and John Palac; asister,Helen Wanca;andfourgrandchildren.

A Mass was held on Friday, May 14, at St. Bartholomew Church in Scotch Plains.

Arrangements werehandledbythe Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home in Linden.

Frank A. Barone, Was Army Veteran; Accountant With GAF Corporation

Frank A. Barone of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, May 12, in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Elizabeth, he lived in Scotch Plains for 41 years.

Mr. Barone had been an accountant for 38 years with the GAF Corporation in Linden prior to retiring in 1988.

He was a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus

Council in Elizabeth. He had served in the United States Army during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Margaret Barone; a daughter, Patricia Osborne; two sons, Mark Barone and Neil Barone; a sister, Angela Barone; two brothers, Salvatore Barone and August Barone, and two grandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Tuesday, May 18, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church, following the funeral from the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Betty Delnero Ruggieri, 56, Secretary, Record Clerk for Prosecutor’s Office

Betty Delnero Ruggieri, 56, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, May 12, at home.

Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Scotch Plains most of her life.

Mrs. Ruggieri was a secretary for George Wolf Realty in Springfield for the last three years. Previously, she had been the senior records clerk with the Union County Prosecutor’s Office in Elizabeth until 1993.

She was a member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman

Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Surviving are her husband, Thomas Ruggieri; two sons, Thomas J. Ruggieri and Michael J. Ruggieri, and two sisters, Barbara Scalzadona and Beverly Zielenbach.

A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday,May 17,atSt.Bartholomew the Apostle Church, following services at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Sophie Katsch, 94, of Westfield died on Friday, May 14, at home.

Born in Germany, she had lived in Springfield before moving to Westfield eight years ago.

Mrs. Katsch had owned the Swiss Yodel Restaurant in Irvington with her late husband, Bruno C. Katsch.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Sharon Chapter, in Union.

Surviving are a daughter, Marilyn Schreiber; a son, Bruno C. Katsch, Jr.; a sister, Alma Schule; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, May 18, at the McCracken Funeral Home in Union.

Franklin P. Donatelli, Sr., 65, Councilman In Scotch Plains; Runnells Superintendent

Councilman Franklin P. Donatelli, Sr., 65, a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains, died on Monday, May 17, at home.

Mr. Donatelli was elected to the Township Council last November in a D e m o c r a tic sweep that gave his party control of the governing body for the first time since 1974. He had also been a Superintendent of Maintenance for Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County in Berkeley Heights for 25 years before retiring in 1998.

Councilman Donatelli was a member of the Scotch Plains American Legion Post No. 209, and of the

Mountainside Elks and the Moose Clubs in Mountainside and Forked River.

He was a United States Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Lorraine McDede Donatelli; two sons, Franklin P. Donatelli, Jr. and Stanley Donatelli; five daughters, Lorraine Walters, Barbara Signorile, Sharon Janssen, Teresa Paszkowski and Maureen Donatelli; a sister, Josephine Capperelli; four brothers, Joseph Donatelli, Mauro Donatelli, Thomas Donatelli and Robert Donatelli, and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, May 20, at 10 a.m. from the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

William Rhein, 84, of Westfield died on Monday, May 17, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Florida, New York, he had lived in Newark and in Hillside before moving to Westfield in 1972.

Mr. Rhein was a warehouse foreman for Federal Business Centers in Edison since 1946.

Surviving are his wife, Phronsie Rhein; a son, Gregory Rhein; two daughters, Gayle Elliot and Christine Korteling, and four grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held today, Thursday, May 20, at 11:30 a.m. in the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Mary Donohue, 78, of Spring Lake Heights died on Sunday, May 16, in Spring Lake Heights Senior

Residence. Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Fanwood before moving to Spring Lake Heights two years ago.

Mrs.Donohue wasaclothespacker for G.C. Murphy and Company in Jersey City.

She was a member of the Supper Club and the Senior Citizens Club in Fanwood.

A Mass will be offered today, Thursday, May 20, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Bayonne, following the funeral from the Levis Funeral Home in Bayonne.

Betty Retzlaff, 81, of Westfield died on Thursday, May 13, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Detroit, she had lived in Westfield for the last 44 years.

Mrs. Retzlaff was a self-employed Avon representative for 30 years in Westfield before retiring in 1979.

She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Naomi Circle, both of the First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Thaddeus A. Retzlaff; a daughter, Virginia Jakubowski; two sons, Jon Retzlaff and Peter Retzlaff; seven grandchildren; and a great grandchild.

A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, May 16, in the First United Methodist Church in Westfield.

Memorial Mass Slated For Anthony F. Conti

A Memorial Mass for Anthony F. Conti, 64, of Savannah, Georgia, who died on Saturday, January 30, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, will be offered on Saturday, May 22, at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.

Born in Bayonne, he lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Savannah nine years ago.

Mr. Conti had been employed by Exxon Corporation in New York, serving in various capacities before retiring as manager of administrative services in New York.

He was a member of the Plainfield Country Club in Edison, the Landings Club in Savannah and the Exxon Annuitants Club. Mr. Conti was also a volunteer for the Carmelite Monastery in Savannah.

He was a United States Army veteran and had served in Europe with the Third Armored Division Band.

He was a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, with a bachelor’s degree in management.

Surviving are his wife, Saundra W. Conti, and a half-brother, Vincent Provino.

Russell McKinnie, 61, Was Member Of Teamster Union Local No. 595

Russell McKinnie, 61, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, May 11, at home.

Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Kenilworth before moving to Scotch Plains 31 years ago.

Mr. McKinnie was employed at Chem Clean furniture refinishers in

Scotch Plains for 11 years. Previously, he had been employed at the former Hyatt Roller Bearing Corporation in Clark for 11 years and was a member of Teamster Union Local No. 595 of Linden.

Surviving are his wife, Sherli McKinnie; three daughters, Wendy Bailey of Lacey, Washington, Vikki Pawlowiczof ScotchPlainsandKimberly McKinnie of Plainfield; his mother, Zora Bell McKinnie of Kenilworth; two brothers, Donald McKinnie of Middlesex and Erwin McKinnie ofHenderson,NorthCarolina; a sister, Carolyn Brentley of Kenilworth, and five grandchildren.

Services were held on Saturday, May15,at theJudkinsColonialHome in Plainfield.
