(908) 272-4456 Adult School to Recognize

Dr. Miner and Mr. Thomas

WESTFIELD – Dr. Robert Scott Miner, Jr. and H. Emerson Thomas will each be given the honorary title of “Trustee Emeritus” and recognized for “their long and faithful service to the Adult School” at the annual meeting of the Westfield Adult School Association tonight, Thursday, May 13.

“As we celebrate our 60th year of service to the community, it seems fitting that we honor Bob Miner and Emerson Thomas — two outstanding, long-time, respected volunteers in Westfield,” said Larry Pargot, President of the Westfield Adult School Association.

Dr. Miner, a former President of the Westfield Board of Education, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from Princeton University.

Following more than two decades with CIBA Pharmaceutical Company (which included a stint in Basel, Switzerland), he joined the Physics Department at Princeton University. Working with Princeton’s Chemistry Department, he conducted research projects for the National Science Foundation in the former Soviet Union; for the United States Energy Research and Development Association (later named the United States Department of Energy), and for the Research Corporation in cooperation with the Clinical Research Group at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

An ordained Deacon and Elder in The United Presbyterian Church, Dr. Miner has been active in The Presbyterian Church in Westfield as a Trustee, Sunday school and Chancel Choir member.

In addition to the Board of Education and the Adult School, he has been an active volunteer with civic and charitable organizations, such as the Westfield “Y,” (former Director and Trustee); the United Fund of Westfield, the Children’s Special

ized Hospital Building Fund, and Union College.

He received a Presidential Certificate of Appreciation for service to the Selective Service System for service on the Scientific Advisory Committee, and was cited for 50year membership in the American Chemical Society. In 1996 he was honored for “service to Princeton University.”

Dr. Miner and his wife, Mary Evelyn, have been residents of Westfield since 1947.

A member of the Adult School Board of Trustees for the past six years, Dr. Miner spearheaded a committee in 1998 to revise the by laws, and recently contacted each of the school’s sponsoring organizations in a fundraising drive to help defray operating costs.

Mr. Thomas, a former three-term Mayor of Westfield, has been recognized with a number of awards over the past few years. The 96-year-old “volunteer” is still active in the community.

The President of Continental Tank Car Corporation, Mr. Thomas has been a resident of Westfield for 58 years. He has donated his time and expertise to a number of organizations, including the Westfield “Y,” the Rotary Club of Westfield, United Fund and Community Center.

He is the Charter President of the Westfield Foundation and helped initiate and incorporate the United Fund in 1957. He is a founder and Past President of the Frost Valley YMCA.

Within the past year, Mr. Thomas was honored by the Westfield Foundation when he was named as Charter President to the Board of Trustees, and by the Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce at its 50th anniversary celebration.

He received the 1981 B’nai B’rith Award, the YMCA’s Golden Man Award in 1973, and the Westfield Rotary Club’s Charles P. Bailey Humanitarian of the Year Award in 1988.

“Emerson Thomas and Bob Miner served on the Adult School Board of Trustees with distinction. It is our honor to honor them,” said Mr. Pargot. “I am delighted to recognize them with the honorific ‘emeritus’ — they truly merit it.”

The Westfield Adult School is a non-profit, independent, voluntary community organization solely supported by tuition charges. Begun in October of 1938, it has offered classes every year since then. Currently, nearly 900 students are enrolled in over 70 courses.
