BridgeH2O Laxers Down Lady Blue Devils, 10-7
The Westfield High School girls lacrosse team ran into a tornado in the form of the Bridgewater-Raritan girls, losing 10-7, on April 28 in Bridgewater. Misfortune for the Blue Devils and opportunistic play by Bridgewater set the stage in the early portion of the game.
The Devils scored twice in less than five minutes but both goals were
disallowed due to very late, offsetting penalty calls. With momentum gone for the Blue Devils, Bridgewater regrouped and scored gaining the 4-0 advantage.
After a time out, Westfield took charge and dominated over the next nine minutes. Freshmen Morgan Lang was having a banner day as she put two on the board for the Devils. Assists by Marina Powell and Kelsey Ill led to Lang’s productivity and ignited the team.
Following Lang, center Julia Gates brought the Blue Devils to within one and 16 seconds later teammate Kristen Salmond knotted the contest as she raced from third home for the goal. With three minutes left, Westfield was unstoppable gaining possession of every ground ball as Donna Schaller and teammate Lauren Mattes tightened up the defense.
The Panthers used the halftime to settle things down and came out ready to take care of business. One minute into the half, Bridgewater regained the lead. Over the next several minutes they repeated what had happened in the first half and scored at will. It was like deja vu all over again
Westfield went to a timeout to slow things down and regroup. Down by four, the lady laxers sent third man, Aubrey McGovern to the goal. Her stick handling and left hand shot found and unprepared goalkeeper and gave the Westfield team their first score of the half.
Cheers were short lived as Bridgewater went back up by four a minute later and seemed to put to rest the lady Devils hopes of victory. Bridgewater added another goal a minute later to go up, 10-5, and started clearing their bench with 10 minutes left. Westfield earned some solace by scoring two late goals by Lang who ended up with the hat trick and one assist. Devil goalkeeper Libby Schundler had 11 saves. Westfield slipped to 4-5.

Highlanders Skin Lionesses, 2-0
Gina Turturiello silenced seven Lions, walked none and allowed only three hits to lead the Governor Livingston High School softball team to a 2-0 blanking of Roselle Catholic in Berkeley Heights on April 27. It was the Highlanders’ seventh shutout of the season.
The Lions received good pitching from Carol Kennedy who allowed just two runs on four hits with no walks. Heather McDonald had two of the hits and one RBI which came in the bottom of the fourth. The Highlanders scored again in the sixth on a fielders choice. Gina Pisano and Turturiello each singled in the game.

by an RBI double lined into center field by Terence Reilly. Mark Cantagallo waited patiently with a two-and-two count and connected with his two-run shot deep into center. Eric Cantagallo, added two RBI with a double as the Highlanders jumped out in front 5-0.
The Crusaders scored a run on two singles and a walk in the bottom of the inning, but the Highlander offense exploded with three more runs in the third. Phillips tapped an RBI single, then Jason Guicipietro followed with a double to right, scoring Phillips. Chris Butler’s sacrifice extended the Highlander lead to 8-1.
The Crusaders went on to score two runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning. The Highlanders broke out with three runs in the top of the fourth, collecting four hits. Designated hitter Brian Schmidt belted a double deep into right and Hank Hansen scored on an overthrow by the third baseman. Writenour answered with his second RBI single. Phillips’ RBI single up-the-middle secured an 11-3 advantage for the Highlanders.
Reilly relieved Phillips in the bottom of the fifth with two outs and surrendered two hits, one to Crusader second baseman Dave DiAntonio who blasted a solo homer deep into center.
The Highlanders ignited for three more runs on four hits in the seventh. Butler singled, Reilly walked and Mark Cantagallo drilled an RBI double. Hansen’s sacrifice RBI and singles by Schmidt and Writenour increased the lead to 14. Johnson scored the final two runs in the bottom of the seventh on two hits. After seven scoreless innings, Piccirillo hit a sharp single to right with one out, followed by the leadoff hitter Heather Kantorek who was hit by a pitch thus moving Piccirillo over to second. The Crusader third basemen scampered for the ball on Ellen Findlay’s bunt but failed to make the play at first, allowing Piccirillo to score the winning run.

Highlanders Sink Roselle Boys, 16-2
The Governor Livingston High School baseball team met Roselle on April 29 in Berkeley Heights for their second meeting of the season. The Highlanders blasted away in five innings, scoring 16 runs while giving up just one.
Starting pitcher, Derrick Writenour, was outstanding facing just nine batters in three innings, while striking out eight. Jason Guidicipietro had a solo home run with two RBI in the fifth for the Highlanders and pitched the fourth inning allowing only one run. Senior Brian Schmidt made his return to first base after missing the beginning of the season due to injury. Schmidt contributed with a double, driving in three runs. Eric Cantagallo, made his presence noted with three hits and four RBI.
Head Coach Bill Howard still has his concerns defensively. “Although we are winning, giving teams four outs per inning, just doesn’t get it done, so we must improve on our mental and physical aspects of the game by tournament time.” The Highlanders currently average nine runs per game and are 10-3.
