Libet of Jonathan Dayton, winning 6-1, 6-4. Chilnick and O’Connell went on to dethrone first-seeded Chris Johnson and Andrew Fields of Summit in the finals, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Blue Devil Jeff Diamond, seeded first at second singles, breezed by Sergio Andrade of Roselle Catholic, 6-1, 6-1, then erased Dan Osit of Dayton, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

In the semis, Diamond stopped Derrick Brooks of Cranford, 4-6, 6-1, 60. In the finals, Miles Moriarty of Summit out-glittered Diamond, 6-2, 6-3, for the title.

Blue Devil first singles player Sam Fleder, seeded fifth, won his opening match with Tom Werner of Union Catholic, 6-1, 6-1, then went on to mildly shock fourth-seeded Todd Kraft of New Providence in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-0.

Next, Fleder met top-seeded sensation Kevin Bielen of Linden and

fell 6-1, 6-0. “He’s just hard to play. He is one of the best players that I have ever seen,” said Fleder after his semifinals match with Bielen. “He has a great game and a great serve when he is on it. He hits the serve and can place it so well that, if you hit it back, he has an easy shot to put it away. When he’s on game, he’s not stoppable!

Fleder concluded, “He is great to play with. He’s really a nice guy. It was a good experience.”

In the playoff for third Fleder defeated Timon Jackson of Plainfield, 6-7 (9-7), 6-1, 6-1.

Blue Devil Ryan Jones at third singles blanked Konrad Konick of Linden, 6-0, 6-0, then defeated John Corbin of Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 63, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Jones fell to champion Ryan Hefter, 6-1, 6-1. Later, Jones defeated Dan Delloiacono of Dayton, 6-3, 6-3, for third place.

Before losing to Jones, Corbin defeated Mike Minicozzi of Governor Livingston, 6-1, 6-1. Afterwards, Corbin defeated Viking J. T. Wilkinson, 6-1, 6-4, then lost to Steve Edwards of New Providence, 6-3, 64, in the playoff for fifth.

At second doubles, Raiders Shawn Lafkowitz and Rob Bugg defeated Jorge Medela and Bill Cuartas of Union Catholic, 6-1, 6-1, then fell to Matt Sacco and Brian Jones of New Providence, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. In the playoffs Lafkowitz and Bugg fell to Dan Perez and George Movded of Governor Livingston, 7-5, 6-4, then went on to defeat Tom Rudnicki and Mike Perez of Johnson, 6-0, 6-0, for seventh place.

Fortune was not so good for the rest of the Raiders. Chris Schlegel at first singles pulled a muscle in his rib cage and had trouble performing, losing to Felix Mil of Dayton, 4-6, 63, 6-1, in the preliminaries. Dave Hassan at second singles, dropped his first round match to Paul Gallagher of New Providence, 7-5, 6-0.

“John (Garozzo) got food poisoning last night, had to go to the hospital and just could not get out of bed this morning,” said Raider Head Coach Dave Blackman. “They had to forfeit the rest of the tournament. It was too bad, because they were the one group who were plugging for a medal. They had a good shot at first or second. For him to be home, he had to be pretty sick. He’s very competitive.”

Blackman continued, “It was just a tough break for the team and a tough break for Paul Swedlund. This is two years in a row that something like this happened to him.”

The Westfield High School girls lacrosse team tried to extend their win streak by two on April 26 in Westfield against a strong opponent from Hopewell Valley but came up short, 8-6.

The Blue Devils started strong scoring two minutes into the contest as Julia Gates handled a fine feed from first home Marina Powell to give the lady Devils a 1-0 advantage. Seven minutes later, Powell accomplished the same result by driving the crease and giving her team their second score.

Hopewell Valley was not about to be undone and their high scorer, Saran Lageman started finding the net. Saran would finish with five goals and lead all scorers in the end. Powell, however, kept the Blue Devils close adding another goal at 14 minutes in but Hopewell matched her score to end the half tied, 3-3.

The second half started quickly for both sides. Powell completed her hat trick two minutes into the second half on a great assist from Jenny Korecky; however seconds later, Hopewell knotted the score. Morgan Lang broke the tie on a long pass from Powell and raced to goal shoving it pass the right side of the Hopewell goalkeeper.

Several minutes passed with Westfield in the lead but it was Lageman finding an opening in the defense and tying the contest once again. Two minutes later, Lageman secured her hat trick and put Hopewell ahead for good. Lageman assisted on the next score and added the final two scores.

Trailing by three, the Blue Devils used all available players to shoot on goal. With five minutes left, the lead was cut to two as Powell scored her fourth. With determination the Devil lady laxers controlled the level of play, possession of the ball and shots on goal but to no avail.
