Craig Scriba, 54, Was Firefighter In Plainfield for Past 28 Years

Craig Scriba, 54, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, April 26, in North Plainfield.

Born in Summit, he had lived in North Plainfield before moving to Scotch Plains 15 years ago.

Mr. Scriba was a firefighter in Plainfield for the past 28 years.

He was predeceased by his father, Erich Scriba, in 1978.

Surviving are two sons, Peter Craig Scriba of Manhattan and Daniel Scriba of Scotch Plains; a daughter, Amy Elizabeth Scriba of Lebanon; his mother, Lorraine Smith Scriba of Springfield, and a brother, Peter Scriba, of Highland Park.

Funeral services were private. Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Helen Razook, 75

Helen Razook, 75, of Westfield died on Wednesday, April 28, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Cranford and California before moving to Westfield in 1995.

Surviving are a son, Mitch Razook, and a sister, Virginia Anter.

A Requiem Mass was held on Saturday, May 1, in the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Rahway.

Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, West, in Cranford.

Lucy A. D’Aleo, 67, Was Homemaker; Life Member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary

Lucy A. D’Aleo, 67, of Toms River died on Thursday, April 29, at Community Medical Center in Toms River.

Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Plainfield before moving to Toms River six years ago.

Mrs. D’Aleo was a homemaker. She was a member of the Dover Senior Center in Toms River and St. Justin’s Roman Catholic Church, and a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Plainfield.

She was predeceased by her husband, Pasquale D’Aleo, in 1981, and

a brother, Tim Barone, in 1990. Surviving are two sons, Robert D’Aleo of Scotch Plains and Peter D’Aleo of South Plainfield; a daughter, Francesann Walters of Toms River; a brother, Patrick Barone of Spring Hill, Florida; two sisters, Tina Simon and Frances Barone, both of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were private. Arrangements were handled by the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals in Toms River.

Charlotte Mulligan, 86

Charlotte Mulligan, 86, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, April 27, in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Newark before moving to Scotch Plains in 1979.

Mrs. Mulligan had been a secretary for GE Supply Company in Newark for 10 years before retiring in 1966.

Surviving are three sons, John A. Mulligan, Kenneth E. Mulligan and Lawrence E. Mulligan, and a grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 30, in the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Peter Polidoro, 84, Master Carpenter With Carpenter’s Union Local No. 620

Peter Polidoro, 84, of Westfield died on Thursday, April 29, at home.

Born in Monteferrante, Italy, he came to the United States in 1928. He had lived in Cranford and Roselle before moving to Westfield 34 years ago.

Mr. Polidoro had been a master carpenter for many years with Carpenter’s Union Local No. 620 in Madison before retiring. He was also a construction and building consultant.

He was a charter member of the Brenner Chapter of the De Moley Society of Cranford where he was

honored as “Man of the Year.” He was also a mason for many years with the Azure Free and Accepted Masons Lodge No. 129 in Cranford.

Surviving are his wife, Emily Polidoro; two sons, Peter Polidoro and George Markwell; a daughter, Sonia Kokie; a brother, Vernon Polidoro; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 3, in the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, West, in Cranford.

Philip Logue, Jr., Mergers Executive With Bank of New York for Many Years

Philip J. Logue, Jr. of Roselle died on Saturday, May 1, at home.

Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Hoboken, Scotch Plains, and Brooklyn before moving to Roselle last February.

Mr. Logue had been a mergers and acquisitions executive with the Bank of New York in New York City for 17 years before retiring last January. Previously, he had worked for Chemical Bank in New York for 10 years and R&T, Inc. in New York for 20 years.

Surviving are three sons, Philip J. Logue, 3rd, Robert Logue and Daniel

Logue; two sisters, Roni De Leo and Joan Kern, and his stepmother, Florence Logue.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 4, in the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, West, in Cranford.

Richard Seely, 59, Mechanical Engineer With PSE&G in Edison for 35 Years

Richard U. Seely, 59, of Long Beach Township died on Friday, April 30, at home.

Born in Glen Ridge, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Long Beach Township in 1998. He had maintained a summer home there since 1987.

Mr. Seely was a mechanical engineer for 35 years at Public Service Electric and Gas in Edison.

He was a former member of the Westfield School Boosters Association and a recreational football coach in Westfield.

He was a graduate of the Newark College of Engineering.

Surviving are a son, Richard T. Seely; a daughter, Kristin M. Seely,

and two brothers, Theodore W. Seely and Christopher A. Seely.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 3, in the Maxwell Funeral Home in Manahawkin.

Hirsch Brown, 85

Hirsch H. Brown, 85, of Durham, North Carolina, died on Wednesday, April 28, at the Triangle Hospice Inpatient Facility.

Born in The Bronx in 1914, he was raised in Newark and graduated from Central High School. He had also lived in Interlaken and in Westfield before moving to Durham in 1981.

He attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and played varsity football.

Mr. Brown had been affiliated with Brown Cigar Company in Asbury Park and with Brown and Sons in Newark.

He was a Mason and a member of the Judea Reform Synagogue.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Isabela Altman Brown; two sons, Edward Brown of Arlington, Virginia and Lawrence Brown of Westfield; his sister, Bernice Sender of San Diego, California, and two grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by the Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home in Durham.

Interment was held at the King Solomon Cemetery in Clifton.

James E. Bennett, 94, Was Lieutenant For New York City Police Department

James E. Bennett, 94, of Westfield died on Thursday, April 29, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in New York City, he had lived in New Brunswick before moving to Westfield four years ago.

Mr. Bennett had served as an officer with the New York City Police Department for 31 years before retiring in 1967 with the rank of Lieutenant.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Kathleen A. Bennett; four daughters, Kay Andriessen, Dorothy Barry, Joan Miller and Maureen Helbig; two sisters, Dorothy Rossini and

Lucille Lang; two brothers, Joseph Bennett and Francis Bennett; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass was offered on Saturday, May 1, in St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.

Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, West, in Cranford.

Santo Fiorino, 71, Former Owner Of Disposal Service in Westfield

Santo “Sam” Fiorino, 71, of Westfield died on Monday, May 3, at home.

Born and raised in New Brunswick, he had lived in Highland Park before moving to Westfield in 1959.

Mr. Fiorino had owned Santo Fiorino Disposal Service in Westfield for 35 years before retiring in 1988.

He was a member of the American Legion Martin Wallberg Post No. 3 of Westfield and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Mountainside and

Westfield. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, where he served as an usher and senior server. He was also a member of the church’s senior group.

He had served as a Seaman in the United States Navy during World War II.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Tillie Scala Fiorino; two sons, Robert Fiorino of Scotch Plains and Dennis Fiorino of Lake Shawnee; a daughter, Genevieve “Gigi” Sofka of Westfield; two brothers, Albert Fiorino of Edison, and Joseph Fiorino of Westfield; a sister, Virginia Mallace of Kendall Park, and eight grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held today, Thursday, May 6, at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Center for Hope Hospice, 176 Hussa Street, Linden, 07036.

Marco DiGiovanni, 90

Marco DiGiovanni, 90, of Los Angeles died on Sunday, May 2, in Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Born in Foggia, Italy, Mr. DiGiovanni came to the United States in 1912. He had lived in Belleville and retired to Los Angeles in 1975.

Mr. DiGiovanni owned and operated Mack Camera Service on Commerce Avenue in Union Township and eventually opened branches in New York City, Philadelphia and Cleveland.

He was also active in several local Union organizations.

He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine DiGiovanni, in 1954, and a son, Nicholas DiGiovanni, in 1967.

Surviving are a son, James DiGiovanni, of Union; a brother, Hugo DiGiovanni, of Mountainside; a companion, Shirley Quinlivan; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held today, Thursday, May 6, at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, Morris Avenue, Union.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Haeberle & Barth Colonial Home in Union.

Madeline McDermott, 74

Madeline D. McDermott, 74, of Whitehouse Station died on Tuesday, May 4, at the Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township.

Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Scotch Plains and Branchburg before moving to Whitehouse Station seven years ago.

Mrs. McDermott was a homemaker.

She was predeceased by a son, William McDermott, in 1983.

Surviving are her husband of 36 years, William F. McDermott; two sons, Jack McDermott, of Branchburg, and Tim McDermott, of Whitehouse Station; four daughters, Kathy Lasch, of Marlton, Joyce Triano, of Somerville, Kathy Swanciger, of Warren and Dee Swanciger, of Branchburg; a sister, Alva Gramlich, Southampton; 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 7, at 8:30 a.m. at the Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 Route 202 South, Branchburg, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Whitehouse Station.

Interment will be held in St. Bernards Cemetery in Bridgewater.

Visitation will be today, Thursday, May 6, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Peter Matino, 84, Lifelong Resident, Was Owner of Shoe Repair Business

Peter Matino, 84, of Westfield died on Tuesday, May 5, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

He was a lifelong resident of Westfield.

Mr. Matino owned and operated Pete’s Shoe Repair, a shoe repair service in Westfield for 38 years before retiring in 1978.

He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church in Westfield.

Surviving are his wife, Fay Matino; three daughters, Frances Homicki, of Branchburg, Joan Pischedda, of Forked River and Phyllis Freeman, of Effort, Pennsylvania; a son, Peter Matino, Jr., of Clayton, North Carolina; a brother, Charles Matino, of Westfield; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Friday, May 7, at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church. Interment will be held in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

TREE PROTECTORS…Cub Scouts from Den No. 9, Pack No. 98 of Scotch Plains recently traveled to the Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside for an Earth Day Service Project. Bear Cub Scouts, pictured left to right, Danny Wright, Justin Berger, Michael Alleman and Brian Pesin, freed the native trees from “alien invaders.” The boys helped remove Oriental Honeysuckle and other vines that can strangle and eventually kill the trees.

Westfield Man Honored By Marine Corps

WESTFIELD – Robert W. Sheehan of Westfield was recently honored at the graduation ceremony at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, on the exact day of his own graduation 34 years ago.

The Marine Corps Band played several selections for him and he was introduced at the Call to Morning Colors, followed by the graduation.

The ceremony ended with a Pass in Review and “Eyes Right” by the graduating Company Marines. The ceremony occurred Friday, February 12, which was the date Mr. Sheehan graduated 34 years ago.

Mr. Sheehan is an insurance executive and no longer affiliated with the Marine Corps, but still spends time in an unofficial caspacity recruiting young men and women to join the Corps. He was with the Marine Corps for 32 years.
