SPF Send 11 PAL Matmen to States

Scotch Plains/Fanwood PAL Raiders are proud to announce that eleven of their matmen have qualified and are heading to the New Jersey State Wrestling Finals in Lakewood on March 20-21 and in Union on March 27-28. Each of the wrestlers had to first compete in one of eight state qualifier tournaments, placing in one of the top three spots in their weight class. Competition is fierce and SP/F’s matmen were able to rise to the demands.

Leading off in the Freshman/ Intermediate division is Matt DeNichilo. Next in the intermediate division is Matt Loomis. Following up in the Junior division are Eric Connolly, Andrew Silber, Andrew Loomis and Derek Francavilla. Next, in the Midget division is Ricky Olsen. In the Bantam division, SP/F is represented by Johnnie Loomis, Dan Gore, Mike Ridge and Trevor Cannon.

Scotch Plains Sr. Basketball Results

(All players over 50)

MARCH 9: SENIOR LEAGUE SEMIFINALS: Cranford Cougars 55, Team Law 25

Berkeley Heights 50, Westfield Pearls 27 MARCH 16: SENIOR LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Berkeley Heights 42, Cranford Cougars 24

CLUB USA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Court Crew (Toms River) 57, Berkeley Heights 47

The Berkeley Heights team captured the league championship of the Scotch Plains Senior League by rolling over an overmatched Cranford Cougars team by 18 points on March 16, causing Cranford’s Bob Keenan to call the Berkeley Heights defense “awesome”. The Berkeley Heights squad chased down every loose ball and rode Pete Tierney’s 15 points to the win.

The victory was somewhat short-lived, however, as the undefeated Court Crew had traveled from Toms River and was waiting to take the court against the winning team for the overall Club Basketball Championship game. The Berkeley Heights team stayed with the Crew for a little more than a half, but the Crew began to pull away in the second half as Berkeley’s players began to wilt.

The Court Crew was led by Jim Blaney with 21, John Kerr with 13 and John Brown with 12. Berkeley Heights got another 15 from Tierney and Dan Cardwell showed energy throughout, chipping in 11.

Old Bridge Douses Flames, 60-52

The Fanwood Flames 5th grade basketball team gave the 6th grade Old Bridge team all it could handle, before dropping a 60-52 decision in the North Brunswick Tournament. The Flames rallied from a 16-point first half deficit to take a two-point lead with six minutes remaining in the game, but Old Bridge’s height and experience advantage prevailed in the game’s final five minutes.

Derrick Caracter led the way with a game-high 31 points. Lance Thomas and Sean Young pumped in seven points apiece. Matt Canfield, Tiffany Smith and D. J. Garrett connected for a bucket each. Bobby Blabolil hit a foul shot. Andrew Colon, Brian Glassett and Matt Canfield all played outstanding defense.

The Flames’ record is 17-14. The Flames’ game against Flemington (A) for the Garden State League championship last week was postponed until this week. The season continues this weekend with a game in the Wayne Tournament on March 27. If the Flames win, they will play March 28.
