Sophomore Courtney Thornton will be the starting shortstop and does have some pitching potential. Thornton has also been proficient with the metal “stick”. She finished with a .423 batting average, thumped one home run, four triples, five
doubles and drove in 17 runs. In addition, her exploits on the base pads earned her seven stolen bases.
“As a freshman, she was very competitive and did not let much rattle her, but of course, she did make some typical freshman mistakes,” said McFadden.
“Courtney has some pitching ability and when she pitches, Katie Brunetto will play short,” added McFadden.
“Although we have a lot of returning players, all of the positions are not necessarily set. I still have some question marks. First base is up for grabs and our outfield positions must be determined.”
Junior Paige Corbett is the only returning outfielder from the varsity. Last year, Corbett committed no errors and was slick offensively as she
had six sacrifices, drove in 10 runs and scored eight.
“Paige has the most experience of our outfielders and has very good range,” said McFadden. “She has a good work ethic, pays attention to details and listens.”
Juniors Katie Richards, Stevie Larson, Katie Brunetto and Erika Van Anglen and sophomore Jessica Wyckoff are candidates for the other outfield positions.
Junior Kristen Leonardis will probably start at second base. Last year, Leonardis batted .357, scored 13 runs, drove in 10 and stole six bases.

“These kids are experienced and, hopefully, if Alicia comes around we could be pretty good,” commented Butz. “We will have a lot of good leadership.”
The Raiders also have some experience with seniors Kim LaForge and Carla Impalli who could play outfield and first base, respectively. Junior Jen Vanderoff who played JV (junior varsity) last year will also provide depth in the outfield.
Butz commented on his expectations for the Raiders. “With a lot of seniors back and a lot of players who have experience, we expect to go far this year although it is going to be a little more competitive in the county this year.”

starters and will be a major force. Immaculata and A. L. Johnson are also quite strong.
“We are going to see some very good softball but the focus here is to go out and have some fun, play the game and play your best,” explained Revel. “If we can’t beat these teams all of the time, we can say at least we did our best.”
As far as the Vikings’ expectations , Revel said, “They are coming off a losing season. Right now, we are just trying to instill in them to come out
and play hard. If we work hard, good things are going to happen. Our first goal is to reach .500. The second goal is to be able to play well with the teams that we know are good. If we can prove to ourselves that we can do that, maybe the second time around, who knows!”
Revel concluded, “As far as lofty goals, I believe that the girls are realistic, we are realistic, we are working hard and hopefully, things will work out.”

have to pay attention to details. They have to work a lot of repetitions. They are going to have to remember from day to day,” McFadden pointed out. “We can’t go backwards and work on what we did the day before. Otherwise, we will never be able to move on until tomorrow.”
Contemplating her offensive punch, McFadden said, “Sue (Phillips) can obviously hit for power. We have a lot of good contact hitters, they are fast and they are smart base runners. As far as base stealing, we have good potential but we must get them on the bases first.”
The Blue Devils have also beefed up their schedule this season by adding Columbia High School and by competing in the Clifton Classic. The Blue Devils will open by hosting Scotch Plains-Fanwood on April 1.
