Carla Schumacher, 74, Bank Supervisor At Chase Manhattan in New York

Carla L. Schumacher, 74, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, March 10, at home.

Born in the Netherlands, she had lived in Queens before moving to Scotch Plains in 1972.

Mrs. Schumacher had been a bank teller and supervisor at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York for 27 years before retiring in 1987.

She was a member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, and a volunteer for Catholic Charities, which helps homeless children in New York.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Nascimento and Stephen O. Nascimento, and a sister, Carmen Slijngard.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 15, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, fol

lowed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.

Evelyn Power, 54

Evelyn Pittington Power, 54, of Plainfield died on Tuesday, March 9, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Fanwood, she was raised in Plainfield and had also lived in North Plainfield for 15 years before returning to Plainfield in 1975.

Surviving are two daughters, Debra Bunton and Kimberly Power, both of Eatontown; two sisters, Shirley Ricci of Denver and Margaret McCabe of Cocoa Beach, Florida, and three grandchildren.

Private services will be arranged by the Scarpa Funeral Home in North Plainfield.

Ruth Becker, Named ‘Woman of Year’; Was District Leader, Air Raid Warden

Ruth Becker of Westfield died on Thursday, March 4, in Union Hospital.

Marie Cafro, 81

Marie Cafro, 81, of Westfield died on Wednesday, March 10, in Rahway Hospital.

Born in Newark, she had lived in Piscataway and Bayville before moving recently to Westfield.

Surviving are three sons, Ralph Cafro, Gerald Cafro and Edward Cafro; two daughters, Grace Chimento and Marie Lazaro; two brothers, Arnold Memoli and Steve Memoli; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Friday, March 12, in Our Lady of Fatima Church in Piscataway, following the funeral from the Middlesex Funeral Home in Middlesex.

March 18, 1999

Born in Newark, she had lived in Irvington before moving to Westfield 30 years ago.

Mrs. Becker was a district leader/ air raid warden in Newark for three years during World War II.

She was a member of the Ladies Felix Fuld Lodge and the Erste Bershader Lodge, both in Newark, and the Women’s Club in Westfield.

She was named “Woman of the Year” by the Senior Citizens in Westfield.

Surviving are two sons, Sheldon Becker and Robert Becker; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, March 7, in King Solomon Cemetery in Clifton.

Arrangements were handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Jack Sanzalone, 4, Former Student At Temple Emanu-El, Local School

Jack Sanzalone, 4, of Westfield, died on Thursday, March 11, at home.

Born in Livingston, he had lived in Westfield all of his life.

He attended Temple Emanu-El preschool and the Precious People Early Earning Center, both in Westfield.

Surviving are his parents, Richard Sanzalone and Lisa Ann Kessler Sanzalone; a sister, Grace I. Sanzalone, all of Westfield; his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Connelly Sanzalone of South Plainfield; and his maternal grandparents, Herbert Kessler and Jane Berenson Kessler of Westfield.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, March 12, at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield. Shiva was observed on Friday, Saturday evening, March 13, and Sunday, March 14, in Westfield.

Arrangements were handled by James W. Conroy Funeral Home in South Plainfield.

Lillian Darrow, 83, St. Bart’s Parishioner; Resident of Scotch Plains for 39 Years

Lillian Toresco Darrow, 83, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, March 10, at home.

Born in Plainfield, she lived in Scotch Plains for 39 years.

Mrs. Darrow was a member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Darrow, in 1970, and by three brothers, Matthew Toresco, Domenick Toresco, and Anthony Toresco.

Surviving are two sons, Larry Darrow of Westfield and Richard

Bruce Darrow of Scotch Plains; a daughter, Rita Poole of Normandy Shores; two sisters, Jeannette DiQuollo of Scotch Plains and Betty Simmons of Sun City, South Carolina; six grandchildren and a greatgrandchild.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 13, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung, followed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.

Mary R. Gibbons, 87

Mary R. Gibbons, 87, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, March 6, at Berkeley Convalescent Center in Berkeley Heights.

Born in Orange, she had moved to Scotch Plains in 1948.

Mrs. Gibbons was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, William Gibbons, in 1990.

Surviving is her daughter, Sharon G. Staehler.

Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, March 10, at Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Helen M. Geiger, 88, Assembly Worker At Cosmair Cosmetic-L’Oreal in Clark

Helen M. Geiger, 88, of Bricktown died on Wednesday, March 10, at Bartley Manor Convalescent Center in Jackson.

Born in Rahway, she had lived there before moving to Bricktown 20 years ago.

Mrs. Geiger had been an assembly worker for 14 years at Cosmair Cosmetic-L’Oreal of Paris in Clark before retiring 25 years ago.

She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Geiger, in 1977.

Surviving are two sons, Richard Geiger of Seminole, Florida and Fred Geiger of Bricktown; a daughter, Anna Ziegler of Fanwood; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 13, at the Silverton Memorial Funeral Home in Toms River.

Valerie V. English, 81, Founded Art Club; Secretary For County Prosecutor’s Office

Valerie V. English, 81, of Mountainside died on Sunday, March 7, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Mountainside 34 years ago.

Mrs. English was head of the accounts payable department at PhelpsDodge in Elizabeth and a secretary in the Union County Prosecutor’s Office for attorney H. Russell Morss.

She co-founded the Elizabeth Art Club, was a secretary of the Art Council of New Jersey, and was a member of the Westfield Art Club and the

Elizabeth Town Cotillion Club. She graduated from the Miami Business School in 1945 and from the Newark School of Fine Arts in 1952. Mrs. English also graduated from the Robert Brackman School of Arts in Noank, Connecticut, and from the Gerry Farnsworth School of Art in North Truro, Massachusetts.

Surviving are her husband, Richard English; two daughters, Devon Colby and Gwyn Nielsen; a sister, Cay Jones; two brothers, Chester Youthkus and Joseph Youthkus, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 13, in the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.

Sandra Moore-Price, 48

Sandra L. Moore-Price, 48, of Fanwood died on Tuesday, March 9, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Chicago, she had lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in Cleveland, in Carol Stream, Illinois, and in Bloomingdale, Illinois, before moving to Fanwood in 1984.

Ms. Moore-Price was an assistant collection manager for Hartz Mountain Industries, Commercial Realty, in Secaucus for 12 years.

She also worked as a collector for Berkeley Federal Savings and Loan in Millburn; and as an account representative for Montgomery Ward in Lombard, Illinois, and General Electric Corporation in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

Ms. Moore-Price was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology from the University of Chicago, and earned a master’s degree in business administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Scotch Plains.

Surviving are a daughter, Shannon M. Price of Fanwood; a son, Thaddeus L. Price of Fanwood; her parents, George W. and Valeria Davis Moore of Fanwood, and a sister, Sharon Moore of Voorhees.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 13, at the First United Methodist Church.

Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Elizabeth Ann Dunn, 61

Elizabeth Ann Dunn, 61, of Brielle died on Wednesday, March 10, at home.

Born in Dickson, Pennsylvania, she had lived in North Plainfield, Scotch Plains and Gillette before moving to Brielle 25 years ago.

A registered nurse, Mrs. Dunn was employed as a school nurse at St. Peter’s Grammar School in Point Pleasant Beach for 10 years. She had previously worked as a nurse for the Ocean Pediatric Group in Brielle.

She graduated from the East Orange School of Nursing.

Surviving are her husband, Gerard J. Dunn, Sr.; two sons, Gerard Dunn, Jr. and Brian J. Dunn, Sr.; a daughter, Maura L. Dunn; a brother, Thomas Bright; two sisters, Joan Jarvis and Mary Giejda, and five grandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Saturday, March 13, in St. Denis Church in Manasquan, following the funeral from the O’Brien Funeral Home in Brick.

Dr. William Young, 60, Clinical Manager For Hoechst Roussel Vet in Warren

Dr. William B. Young, 60, of New Hope, Pennsylvania died on Saturday, March 13, in the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Born in Dumbarton, Scotland, he had lived in London, in Scotch Plains, and in Nova Scotia, Canada before moving to New Hope in 1997.

Dr. Young was the senior clinical development manager for Hoechst Roussel Vet in Warren since 1997. He had previously worked in clinical research for Eli-Lilly’s Elanco Division in Toronto, Canada, as well as for Schering-Plough of Kenilworth.

While living in Nova Scotia and in London, Ontario, he maintained a private veterinary practice.

He was a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Associations and the British Veterinary Association.

Dr. Young was a 1957 graduate of Dumbarton Academy in Dumbarton, Scotland, and a 1963 graduate of Glasgow University in Glasgow, Scotland.

Surviving are his wife, Marie E. Young; four sons, Thomas B. Young, Charles E. Young, William J. Young and James D. Young; a sister, Margaret Graham, and two grandchildren.

A Mass will be offered today, Thursday, March 18, at 11 a.m. in St. Luke’s

Episcopal Church in Newtown, Pennsylvania.

Arrangements are being handled by the Joseph A. Fluehr, 3rd Funeral Home in Richboro, Pennsylvania.

Vera Rubine, Was Active in Hadassah; Coordinated Youth Agency Services

Vera Rubine of Westfield died on Monday, March 15, at home.

Born in Sanford, North Carolina, she had lived in Bayonne and in Cranford before moving to Westfield 25 years ago.

Mrs. Rubine had been employed by the Jersey City office of the New Jersey State Board of Children’s Guardians, now the Division of Youth and Family Services, before retiring many years ago. During her career there, she coordinated agency services and oversaw volunteer scheduling.

She served on the board of the Jewish Family Services in Elizabeth. Mrs. Rubine also was a life member of the Hadassah of Cranford-Roselle, and a member of the Sisterhood of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield and Temple Beth-El in Cranford.

She edited the newsletter for

Lucy DeAndrea, 92, Rehabilitated Homes in Freehold and Plainfield

Lucy Tumolo DeAndrea, 92, died on Sunday, March 14, at the McCarrick Care Center in Franklin.

Born in Philadelphia, she was raised in Long Valley and had lived in Plainfield for 53 years. She had also lived in Toms River for 14 years before moving to Franklin in 1992.

Mrs. DeAndrea had been a secretary for the Plainfield Dress Company. She and her late husband, Peter Andrea, also bought and rehabilitated homes in Plainfield and Freehold, which they then sold or rented.

She was a member of St. Justin’s Roman Catholic Church in Toms River and its Rotary Society, and was a former member of St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church in Plainfield. She was also a member of the Toms River Senior Citizens.

Mrs. DeAndrea was a graduate of Drake’s Business School.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1987, by her son, Francis R. DeAndrea, in 1985, and by her daughter, Josephine Panetti, in 1976.

Surviving are a daughter, Eleanor Gordon of Somerset; five brothers, Louis Tumolo of Lavallette, Anthony Tumolo of Scotch Plains, Germano “Gerry” Tumolo of West Virginia, James Tumolo of Warren and Alfred Tumolo of Flemington; two sisters, Adaline Tumolo of Scotch Plains and Josephine Furey of Toms River; five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, March 18, at 9 a.m. in the Scarpa Funeral Home in North Plainfield, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Church.

Temple Beth-El and served as a troop leader for Troop No. 1 of the Girl Scouts and Brownies of Washington Rock Girl Scout Council for 10 years.

She earned a degree in political science from Douglass College in New Brunswick.

Surviving are her husband, George Rubine; a son, Allen Rubine of Cranston, Rhode Island; a daughter, Marcia Masten of New York City, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, March 17, in Temple Emanu-El.

Arrangements were handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Evelyn G. Anderson, 88, Secretary At Fanwood Presbyterian Church

Evelyn G. Anderson, 88, of Fanwood died on Monday, March 15, in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Mountainside before moving to Fanwood in 1948.

Mrs. Anderson had been a secretary from 1956 to 1997 at the Fanwood Presbyterian Church, where she was also a member and a Sunday School teacher.

She had previously worked for Bell Labs in Murray Hill.

She was a member of Daughters of America, Patriotic Council No. 34.

She was predeceased by her husband, Oscar E. Anderson, in 1966.

Surviving are a son, the Reverend Robert Edward Anderson of Reynolds, Illinois, and a daughter, Dorothea Arrowsmith of Scotch Plains.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, March 18, at 7 p.m. in the Fanwood Presbyterian Church. There will be no visitation.

Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Post Office to Issue Stamp Depicting Hospice Care

The United States Post Office has issued its newest commemorative first class stamp in recognition of the 3,000 hospice programs caring for terminally ill individuals in this country.

The “Hospice Care” stamp design is a butterfly over a home, symbolizing life’s journey to its final stage. It

became available Feb. 9. “This stamp presents an opportunity both nationally and locally to share the message that dying well, surrounded by friends and loved ones, is an option available to all Americans,” noted National Hospice Organization President, Karen A. Davie.

“It is an honor the United States Post Office has chosen to acknowledge hospice care as being worthy of a commemorative stamp,” said Margaret Coloney, President of The Center For Hope Hospice in Linden. “It is the hope of all hospice caregivers that the American people will understand that all of life is precious and that its end deserves the same attention to quality.”

Hospice is a medical program of care for terminally ill individuals and their families Its mission is to provide physical, emotional and spiritual support, assisting the individual to live with dignity and freedom from pain until the natural event of death occurs.
