yielded an escape while picking up two penalty points in the second, then added an escape and a two-point penalty to capture a 14-3, majority decision.

In Union, Donnie DeFilippis of New Providence was, once again,

dazzling as he baffled Hornet Craig Wright of Passaic Valley in 4:44 with a pancake throw to a finishing headlock. Before ending it, DeFilippis scored on a variety of six takedowns, mixed in with one escape.

DeFilippis was the only Region 3 wrestler to receive the top seed for the New Jersey State Championships. Ekstrom was seeded fourth and Mergott and DeWitt both received the fifth seed.

Governor Livingston Highlander Tim Marcantonio won a trip to Atlantic City by pinning Doug Deptula of Glen Ridge in 1:22, but had to settle for a third-place opportunity when he was defeated by Brad Christe of Fort Lee, 3-1, in the prequarterfinals.

At Atlantic City, Marcantonio kept alive by defeating Phil DiBiasi of Ramsey, 8-7, in the first round wrestlebacks, then by defeating Levi McVey of Pinelands, 10-4, in the second round. Marcantonio made it to the wrestleback quarterfinals were he was stopped by Jared Frey of Phillipsburg in 5:08.

Senior Mike Machin came to life in the third quarter to lead the Pioneers to victory in the Group 1 semifinal game in Plainfield on March 10. Machin hit 10 of his team-leading 17 points in that quarter. Todd Simo sank 16 points while Tim Simo and Mike Piccolo scored 10 each.

The Pioneers jumped their record to 20-5 an advanced to the Group 1 finals which was held at Convention center in Atlantic City on March 14. Waldwick slid to 20-5.

NJ PAROCHIAL A CHAMPIONSHIP: Seton Hall Prep 57, Roselle Catholic 47

Top-ranked Seton Hall Prep got a contest from the hungry Lions. Senior forward Tim Benoit led the Lions with 21 points and achieved that remarkable 1,000-career point plateau, finishing with 1,002.

Mike Machin tipped in a Todd Simo shot at the buzzer to give the Pioneers the victory in Atlantic City on March 14. Machin finished with 13 points and Simo finished with 12.

Mike Bird ricocheted in the winning goal 2:56 into overtime to left the 13th-ranked Westfield High School ice hockey team to a 4-3 victory over 15th-ranked Summit in the quarterfinals of the New Jersey Devils public schools tournament at Warinanco Rink in Roselle on March 10.

After losing to the Hilltoppers in their first meeting, the Blue Devils racked up three-straight convincing victories over them. This time, however their meeting was more closely contested.

Max Langford and Ronnie Kashlak each fired in a goal to give the Blue

Devils a 2-0 lead in the first period. Just before the end of the period Hilltopper Dave Haire flicked in a goal to tighten the score.

The Hilltoppers struck early in the second period with goals from Mike Nelson and Matt Starker to take a 32 lead. They kept the lead until Josh Falcone netted a goal with 8:03 left in the third period.

The Blue Devils, who advanced to the semifinal round for the first time in school history, played fifth-ranked Brick at the Mennen Arena in Morris Township. Westfield improved to 1512 while Summit slipped to 16-7-2.
