Westfield Killer Bees Win Nutmeg Soccer Tourney
The U12 Killer Bees competed in and won the Wilton, Connecticut Nutmeg Soccer Tournament on June 12-13. The Flight 2 Killer Bees faced stiff competition from four Flight 1 CT teams.
In the first game the Bees faced the Westport Terminators, Stephanie Bridgemen fed Lauren Purdy, who scored the first goal. The Terminators tied the game, but later, Bridgeman sent another excellent crossing shot that Gio Palatucci sent rocketing in the net for the goal. Late in the game, Jessie Elkoury sent a shot across the goal, which Hannah Burke tapped in for a 3-1 win.
In game 2, the Danbury Sidekicks jumped off to a 1-0 lead, but in the second half, Bridgeman broke away and made a perfect shot into the upper right corner of the net to tie the game. Ten minutes later, Bridgeman crossed to Melissa Rosen for the goal. Once again, Westfield’s defense this time led by Palatucci, Annie Onishi and Jessie Elkoury turned back Danbury’s attack to preserve a 2-1 victory.
In game 3, the Bees faced the Avon Bobcats. The Bees dominated the entire game, highlighted by two quick goals by Purdy, one after a rebound and the other after another excellent cross from Bridgeman. In the second half Avon scored off a free kick, but the Bees scored twice on a cross from Palatucci to Purdy and on a free kick by Bridgeman, for a 41 victory.
Game 4 against the Fairfield Shooters was scoreless until the second half until Aly Carter sent a pass to Purdy who drove down field and sent a rocket into the net. Later, Burke sent a pass up field that Jessica Schor chipped in for a 2-0 win.
In the Championship game, Danbury scored first on a long, high shot into the far corner, but keeper Onishi did make several spectacular saves. Late in the first half Palatucci slipped a short shot by the Danbury goalie to tie the game.
In the second half the strong play by midfielders Paltucci, Dickson, Jenna Federgreen, Ann Siwulec and Sarah Hansen turned back Danbury. The 1-1 tie forced a dramatic 15-minute overtime. With only four minutes remaining, Bridgeman tallied her fifth assist by crossing to Purdy who tapped in her sixth goal of the tournament to give Westfield a 21 victory and their first Tournament Championsship.
