Scotch Plains Baptist Church Receives Facelift, Restoration
SCOTCH PLAINS — The outside of the sanctuary of Scotch Plains Baptist Church, which dates back to 1870-1871, is currently under construction at a cost of approximately $29,606.
The project includes cleaning, resetting and pointing of the bricks of the sanctuary as well as repainting, roof work and installation of new stained-glass window protectors. The inside of the sanctuary was remodeled two years ago during the congregation’s celebration of their 250th anniversary.
The church’s history records indicate that, “March 30, 1870 is a red letter day in the history of the church. On that day the Committee on Building presented plans for a brick and stone structure, to be erected on the corner opposite the parsonage, at a cost of $23,000. They were given authority to proceed. The first Sunday worship service was held in the new building in July of 1871.”
The exterior renovation project of the sanctuary is expected to take four to five months to complete.

First Congregational Names Recipients of Scholarship
WESTFIELD — The First Congregational Church of Westfield has n a m e d M a t t h e w Rausch and A l i s o n Westerhold as this year’s recipients of the John H. Alexander S c h o l a r ship award.
M r. Alexander was a longtime law partner of Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander and Ferdon and a specialist in federal tax law.
In 1968, he was appointed the Chairman of the President’s Task Force on Business Taxation by former President Richard M. Nixon, a position he held from 1969 to 1970.
Mr. Alexander was a long-time member of First Congregational
Church in Westfield. The award in his memory honors worthy high school seniors who are also members of the church.
Both recipients were active in youth fellowship activities, as teaching assistants in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and in the church’s outreach programs.
M a t t h e w g r a d u a t e d from Seton Hall Prep where he was class valedictorian and will a t t e n d Lafayette College. At the church, he served on the Board of Christian Education. Alison graduated from Westfield High School and will attend SUNY-Oswego, New York in the fall. She was a member of the Board of Deacons at the church.

Women For Women Installs Officers at Pot Luck Supper
At its annual pot luck supper, Women for Women installed new officers for the year 1999-2000.
Newly installed officers are CoPresidents Maryann Higgins and Paula Blumenthal; Vice President Barbara Rothman and Treasurer Meira Findel.
Presiding over the installation of new officers were outgoing President Susan Koslowsky and Executive Director Marilyn Spera.
At the closing of the ceremony, Ms. Koslowsky was presented with a gold bracelet as a token of appreciation for her years of service and flowers were presented to both Ms. Koslowsky and Ms. Spera, for their dedication to the organization.
Ms. Koslowsky served as President of Women For Women for the past three years. As a result of her efforts, the agency has a new home at 511 North Avenue and is now a member of the United Fund, receiving grants to maintain the organization. She also ran seven support groups for children helping children.
Women for Women is a non-profit agency, which offers short-term, low cost, individual counseling and selfhelp support groups for women who
are going through transitional or developmental crises in their lives.

Jane Annis Volunteers At CONTACT We Care
MOUNTAINSIDE — Retired interior designer and painter Jane Annis, has been a volunteer for CONTACT We Care, the 24 hour telephone hotline and crisis intervention service based in Union County for 16 years, assisting callers from Union, Somerset, Middlesex and Essex Counties.
“Working one-on-one with someone in need feels like the right thing to do,” said Ms. Annis. “I feel like it’s something I’m doing for God. When, after so many years I begin to feel as if I’m burning out, someone calls CONTACT and I feel as if I was the right person to be there for them.”
Ms. Annis, who owned the Westfield-based Ideas for Interiors for 25 years, stated, “After 20 years doing volunteer work with the Junior League, I was at a point in my life where I was totally absorbed in my work and wasn’t doing much to give back to the community. I am blessed with wonderful family, good health, and financial se
curity. I wanted to do something to help others.”
Ms. Annis signed up for CONTACT’s volunteer training class, which teaches individuals how to actively listen and deal with a broad range of human needs. “The training was wonderful!” she noted.
Her long tenure at CONTACT includes six years on the non-profit agency’s Board of Trustees. “There was a time when I was doing something for CONTACT on a daily basis,” said the former chairperson of the agency’s personnel and long range planning committees.
“I am proud that while I was on the board, CONTACT took big steps forward with staffing and funding. We accomplished a lot,” she explained.

Local Chapter of Red Cross To Host Special Blood Drive
WESTFIELD — A special blood drive sponsored by the Westfield/ Mountainside Chapter of the Ameri
can Red Cross, in conjunction with The Blood Center of New Jersey, will be held on Wednesday, August 4, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the chapter house at 321 Elm Street in Westfield.
This drive will be open particularly to individuals who have Type “O” blood.
“This type of blood is always in demand for many reasons, and we want to let people with Type O blood know just how special they are,” said Judy Daniels, spokeswoman for The Blood Center of New Jersey.
“All donors will receive uniquely designed T-shirts, a cholesterol screening, and will leave the blood drive knowing what a life-saving donation they have made,” she continued.
Type O blood is regularly in short supply. Type O negative blood is found in just 6 percent of the population, yet in much higher percentages among patients.
According to blood center officials, people with O negative blood are known as universal donors, because their blood can be transfused into virtually anyone.
Type O negative blood is required frequently in emergency rooms and trauma units when blood is needed immediately and there is no time for typing the patient’s blood.
Patients with Type O negative blood can only receive transfusions of O-negative blood. This blood type is additionally used for exchange transfusions for newborn babies and pregnant women, and for premature babies in intensive care units.
Individuals with type O positive blood can give to 85 percent of the population — those with types A positive, B positive, AB positive, and O positive blood type. Although O positive is the most common blood type, shortages occur because of its value to so many patients.
Although the drive is appealing to individuals with types O-negative and O-positive blood, all donors are invited to participate, and all donors will receive T-shirts regardless of blood type.
Individuals should know their Social Security number and bring a signed form of identification with them. Donors must be 18 years of age. Seventeen year olds may donate with signed parental permission.
There is no upper age limit for donors, provided they have donated within the last two years, or have a doctor’s note.
There is a 72-hour deferral for dental work, including routine teeth cleaning, and donors who have traveled outside of the United States recently are asked to call the blood center for eligibility criteria.

County Sponsors Program For Former Stroke Patients
The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, through the Division of Parks and Recreation, is conducting an exercise program for people who have had strokes.
Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday, from noon to 1 p.m. in the auditorium of Runnells Specialized Hospital in Berkeley Heights. The program will continue through Tuesday, November 9.
Conducted by a physical therapy aide and a recreation therapist, the
non-stressful program addresses general fitness and focuses on balance, posture, overall health and exercise which can be performed in the participant’s home.
This activity is accessible to those in wheelchairs, and features activities that can be adapted to a variety of needs.
There is a one-time enrollment fee of $15 per person. Pre-registration is required. For further information, please call the Division of Parks and Recreation at (908) 527-4900.
