Edison Intermediate Tells Fourth Period Honor Roll

The names of 262 students who earned Honor Roll standing during the fourth marking period at the Edison Intermediate School in Westfield were recently announced.

In the sixth grade, 41 students, or 23.84 percent of the 172-member class, were named to the Distinguished Honor Roll, which requires an “A” in all major academic subjects and no grade below a “B” in any minor subject.

Seventy-one students, or 41.28 percent of the class, were named to the Honor Roll, which requires an “A” or “B” in all subjects, major or minor.

In the seventh grade, 35 students, or 19.23 percent of the 182-member class, were named to the Distinguished Honor Roll, and 54 students, or 29.67 percent of the class, were named to the Honor Roll.

In the eighth grade, 25 students, or 16.67 percent of the 150-member class, were named to the Distinguished Honor Roll, and 36 students, or 24 percent of the class, were named to the Honor Roll.

Roosevelt Intermediate Tells Fourth Period Honor Roll

The names of 360 students who earned Honor Roll standing during the fourth marking period at the Roosevelt Intermediate School in Westfield were announced recently by Principal Kenneth Shulack.

In the sixth grade, 56 students, or 25.69 percent of the 218-member class, were named to the Distinguished Honor Roll, which requires an “A” in all major academic subjects and no grade below a “B” in any minor subject.

Ninety-one students, or 41.74 percent of the class, were named to the Honor Roll, which requires an “A” or “B” in all subjects, major or minor.

In the seventh grade, 50 students, or 26.18 percent of the 191-member class, were named to the Distinguished Honor Roll, and 74 students, or 38.74 percent of the class, were named to the Honor Roll.

In the eight grade, 20 students, or 10.64 percent of the 188-member class, were named to the Distinguished Honor Roll, and 69 students, or 36.70 percent of the class, were named to the Honor Roll.

Area Students Earn Degrees From Washington and Lee

WESTFIELD – Three area residents were recently awarded degrees from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia during the school’s June 3 commencement.

Kelly E. Norton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Norton of Westfield, graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Politics.

While at Washington and Lee, she was a member of the varsity soccer team Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She was named to the Honor Roll and the Dean’s List, and recognized as a scholar-athlete.

Ryan M. Elliott, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Elliott of Westfield, graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science with Special Attainments in Commerce Degree. He majored in business administration.

At Washington and Lee, he was Captain of the Rugby Club and a member of the Freshman Orientation Committee and the Committee on the 250th Observance.

He was elected Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma national academic honoraries, and was named to the Honor Roll and Dean’s List. Mr. Elliott was also awarded a Beta Theta Pi Fraternity Scholarship.

Linda M. Salerno graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Salerno of Fanwood.

Area Students Earn Dean’s List Status At Duke University

Nicole Suzanne Schwartz of Scotch Plains and Meghan Love Corbett of Westfield have been named to the Dean’s List with Distinction for the Spring 1999 Semester at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must earn a grade point average placing them in the highest third of their class; for Dean’s List with Distinction, an average placing them in the highest 10 percent of their class.

Nicole is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven N. Schwartz of Scotch Plains.

Megan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Corbett of Westfield.

Sydney Barrow Earns Bachelor Degree From Georgia Tech

WESTFIELD — Sydney Barrow graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta on June 12. She majored in Industrial Design and received a Bachelor of Science Degree with honors.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Barrow of Westfield.

Sydney graduated from Westfield High School in 1995.

Bachelor’s Degrees

WESTFIELD — Wesley B. Smittle, formerly of Westfield, graduated from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia on May 16.

He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Plant and Soil Science from the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Human Resources.

In July, Mr. Smittle will enroll in the masters degree program of the Department of Food Science at Virginia Technological University.

Also in the graduating class was his wife, Anne Y. Smittle. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.

Mr. Smittle is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Richard B. Smittle of Clear Brook, Virginia, formerly of Westfield.

Nicole’s Yoga Center To Conduct New Session

GARWOOD —Nicole’s Yoga Center in Garwood will begin its early fall program session on the week of July 26.

Nicole’s method of Yoga provides a step-by-step program covering basic and advanced postures to improve body image, glandular function, strength, coordination, flexibility and the ability to maintain a quiet, focused presence.

Each class ends with relaxation, meditation and visualization.

A Sitting Breathing Class and a Heart and Back class will be offered. A class of Yoga for Children will be held on Friday, July 16, at 3 p.m. Parents are welcome.

The Yoga Center will be open for information and registration on the following days: Mondays, July 19 and 26 from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, July 24, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Two Local Students Receive Degrees From Vanderbilt Univ.

WESTFIELD – Westfield residents, Elizabeth Ann Mlynarczyk and Michael Lynch Fisher both received their Bachelor of Arts from the College of Arts and Science at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.

Elizabeth is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. Mlynarczyk of Westfield. She graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Michael is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steven D. Fisher of Westfield. He also was named to the Dean’s List for the Spring 1999 semester for the College of Arts.

To qualify for the Arts and Science Dean’s List, students must receive grades equivalent to a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the semester.
