Westfield Nationals Topple Raritan 8’s Team, 13-4

The Westfield Eight-year old National Team recently defeated the Raritan team by a score of 13-4.

Westfield got on the scoreboard early with two runs in the first inning with a single by Greg Mucci, a double by Michael Irving and a hit by Matt Isabella. Raritan came back in the first with a walk and two hits to tie the score.

In the second inning, Spencer Cassidy singled, Robert Grandstand walked and Mucci smacked a two-run single. Westfield pitcher Isabella struck out all three Raritan batters in the second to retire the side.

Although Chris Jacob had a single in the third, the Nationals failed to score. Two strikeouts and a pop up also kept Raritan scoreless and the score remained 4-2.

Westfield exploded for five runs in the fourth. Kevin Hearon led off with a

single. A single by Chris Jenkins scored Hearon. T. J. Mruz singled and a hit by Grandstand scored Mruz. Additional hits by Mucci and Andy Flood scored Grandstand. Irving concluded the assault by crushing a two-run triple. Raritan added two runs in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run, making the score 9-4.

Jacob led off the fifth with a walk. Jenkins singled and scored Jacob. Another walk to Cassidy put men on first and second, then Grandstand ripped a two-run single, making the score 124. Westfield added a run in the sixth on a single by Andy Flood followed by three walks.

SP-F 11’s Make Cranford Playoffs

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood 11-yearold Raiders earned a berth in the Cranford playoffs with a 4-1 record in their flight, beating Metuchen, Garwood, Roselle Park, and Kenilworth while losing only to flight winner Cranford. The Raiders were to face either South Brunswick, Westfield or Plainfield in the first round of the double-elimination playoffs.

Leading the offense in the five games were Kyle Gates who batted .625 with three doubles, Jeff Bell with a double and a triple and eight RBI, Clayton Balch with five runs scored and a .600 on-basepercentage, Sean Young with a double and a triple and five runs scored and Matt Scibek and Danny Birnbaum each with big home runs.

Scibek and Brian Halpin won two games apiece on the mound, with Scibek turning in two complete games. The Raider defense was excellent throughout, featuring sparkling infield play. Chris Hambleton provided yeoman service in the catcher’s position in spite of the heat. Chris Cooper played well at third, with Dominique Price, Alex Fourre and Chris Nilsen all contributing with both the bat and defensively in the outfield.
