Workshop on Parenting
WESTFIELD — The First Baptist Church in Westfield will host its “Smart Discipline” workshop for parents on Wednesday, July 7, from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. in the sanctuary of the church.
The workshop, which includes a system for motivating children “to follow the rules,” will be introduced by local television personality Molly McClosky, who has appeared on “Romper Room.”
The Smart Discipline approach intends to build a child’s self-esteem, while teaching them the consequences of their choices and actions.
The workshop is free of charge and is open to the public. It is hosted by the Vacation Bible School (VBS) of the First Baptist Church, which is offering evening classes for children from fourth to fifth grade, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, July 5 to 9. The VBS program is also free.
On the evening of July 7 only, the church will provide childcare for the siblings of children in VBS if their parents are attending Smart Discipline.
“We are trying to make it easy for parents to hear the principles and techniques of positive parenting. Systems like Smart Discipline give hassled parents an alternative to arbitrarily punishing, yelling at, or
striking a child,” said Dr. Dee Dee Turlington, Minister of Christian Education and Evangelism at First Baptist.
To register for either or both events, please call church office at (908) 233-2278.
