SPF 8’s Youth Baseball Tops Kenilworth, 7-6, in Tourney
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Youth Baseball Association 8-year old tournament team opened it’s season on June 26 with an exciting, heart-stopping come from behind win over Kenilworth in the Cranford Tournament.
After falling behind 4-0, the Raiders found their hitting shoes and scored five runs in the fourth inning. William Hubbard singled, then promptly stole second and third and scored on Joseph Del Prete’s RBI single. Del Prete also ended up on third via two steals and was driven in by James Wheeler. Michael Klotz singled Wheeler to third and both runners came around to score on Jimmy Burke’s double. Burke was later driven home on Kyle Richer’s RBI single.
Kenilworth regained the lead, 6-5, in the top of the sixth. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth and Klotz at third, Jackson Udelsman stroked an RBI single to tie the score. That brought up Tyler Della Badia who lashed a single to drive in the winning run.
Leading the offense for the Raiders were Klotz and Della Badia who each collected two hits. Michael Lauricella, Del Prete, Wheeler, Burke, Udelsman, Richers and Hubbard all chipped in with one hit. Defensively, the Raiders were very sound. Tom Holt, Brendan McEvoy, Wheeler, Klotz, Del Prete and Burke all played a solid game. Hubbard, Wheeler, Burke and Klotz all shared the pitching duties with Klotz picking up the win in relief.
Arthritis Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic Becomes a Hit
Several legendary sports celebrities teed up for the First Annual Bobby Thomson Arthritis Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic at Ridgewood Country Club in support of the Arthritis Foundation, New Jersey chapter, on May 25.
Baseball legend, Arthritis Foundation ambassador, and United States postage stamp honoree Bobby Thomson; along with baseball hall of famer Yogi Berra; basketball great Dave DeBusschere; football favorite Brian Kelley, honorary golf pro Bob Ross, and renowned sportscaster Don Criqui teamed up to raise money for the Arthritis Foundation, New Jersey Chapter.
The funds will help more than one million New Jersey residents affected by arthritis.
“With Bobby Thomson as our ambassador, we’re raising awareness and providing resources to local residents in ways we never thought possible,” said Dennis Hirschfelder, Arthritis Foundation, New Jersey Chapter President. “We hope this tournament will grow in years
to come, and become even an even stronger force within the community.”
Five major New Jersey corporations, and a foursome hosted by Chairman of the Arthritis Foundation, New Jersey Chapter, Dr. William R. Darrow, joined celebrities on the green. Participating companies were: Johnson & Johnson (New Brunswick), The CIT Group (Livingston), Lerner, David, Littenberg, Krumholz and Mentlik (Westfield), Howmedica Osteonics (Allendale), and Total Solutions, Inc. (Morris Plains).
Fundraiser participants enjoyed a down-home barbecue, a round of golf with a celebrity, and an elegant dinner, complete with awards and honors.

The Chapter funds arthritis research and offers programs for people with arthritis and their families including: support groups, exercise classes, self-help courses, information and referral service and free public forums on arthritis.
Rajoppi Golf Outing Helps Feed the Hungry People
Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi recently donated $5,800 to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. The donation represents a portion of the proceeds raised at the Joanne Rajoppi 7th Annual Golf Outing held earlier this month.
The funds will be used by the Hillsidebased Community FoodBank, the largest source of donated food in the state, to assist more than 400,000 people a month at emergency: pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, child care centers and other areas where the hungry turn for help.
Kathleen DiChiara, Executive Director of the Community FoodBank, said she was pleased and grateful to receive the donation which will assist the
FoodBank in distributing food to charities around the state.
“I’m delighted,” County Clerk Rajoppi said, “to make the largest contribution in our outing’s history to the Community FoodBank of NJ. Their dedication and commitment on behalf of the hungry in our state is well recognized and they have made a strong impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and adults in our state.”
Ms. Rajoppi noted that this year’s event was the most successful in terms of sponsors, golfers and other contributors. “It’s a reflection of the Community FoodBank of NJ and the work they perform that there was such an overwhelming response to the event,” she said.
SPF 11’s Raiders Eliminate Metuchen and Garwood
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood 11-year old Raiders opened the 1999 tournament baseball season with two victories in the Cranford Baseball League Tournament by defeating Metuchen and Garwood.
Matt Scibek pitched a masterful game in the opener against Metuchen, tossing a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and
one walk in the 6-2 victory. The Raiders displayed tremendous team speed and a stingy defense. Jeff Bell and Sean Young each contributed two hits.
On June 27, the Raiders faced a couple of tough pitchers from Garwood and fell behind 3-1 after four innings. But then their bats woke up. Chris Cooper led off the bottom of the fifth with a hard smash single to center field. Alex Fiore followed with a chopper to the pitcher, who made the mistake of trying to throw out the lead runner at second. Both runners were safe. After they advanced on a passed ball, Brian Halpin flew out to short left field. Clayton Balch then hit a grounder wide of first, which the first baseman fielded but had to hold as Cooper scored and Balch reached.
With the score, 3-2, Sean Young stepped to the plate and on a 2-2 count and drilled a double to the wall in right center, scoring Fiore and Balch with the tying and go-ahead runs. Chris Nilsen then lashed a single to right, scoring Young for an insurance run.
Halpin then came out in the bottom of the sixth and set down Garwood 1-2-3, aided by Bell’s diving catch at first, for a 5-3 victory. Halpin pitched three scoreless innings in relief to gain the victory. The Raiders defensively turned two double plays and for the second consecutive game did not commit an error.
