Blue Devil Giancone Receives Ray Barbuti Football Award

Recently at the Westfield High School Annual Football Banquet junior Running Back, Chris Giancone, was presented the Ray Barbuti Award by Steve Toal, Westfield resident and college football official. Giancone was nominated for the Barbuti Award after suffering a season ending knee injury. Giancone received a certificate and a football signed by all the players of the Princeton University Football Team.

The Raymond Barbuti Award, sponsored by Wilson Sporting Goods Company and administered by the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Football Officials Metropolitan Chapter, acknowledges student athletes for their outstanding courage, determination and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Ray Barbuti, an Olympic gold medal winner and college football official, originated the award to give recognition to young men who suffered injury in the course of participation in the sport and have displayed unusual fortitude, determination and positive at

titude toward recovery. “Due to circumstances beyond their control, many football players have sustained season ending, life threatening and sometimes fatal injuries. We, as officials, feel a strong bond with all players but feel that it is important for us to recognize those individuals who have displayed these unique traits,” Toal said.

Westfield Little Devils Begin Their Wrestling Season

Al Rabinowitz, coach of the Westfield “Little Devil” wrestlers, opened the season with the announcement of captains for the 1998-1999 campaign. Tri-captains Sam Kramer, Craig Hewit and Tommy DelDuca will guide a team of nineteen wrestlers during the next several months.

Besides the three captains, team members include: Joey Corea, Nick Delpopolo, John Falzone, Joe Kania, Matt Leonard, John Martoglio, Mike McCrea, Colin McKay, Jimmy McManus, Tommy McManus, Steve Morrison, Brandon Rolnick, Ricky Ruhl, Drew Skibitsky, Stan Sturgis, and Mike Tannenbaum.

Facing some of the top-ranked teams in central New Jersey, the Westfield Little Devils opened up their season against Middlesex, Roselle Park and Voorhees. Fielding a very young and inexperienced squad, Middlesex defeated Westfield by a score of 66–15. Key victories for the Little Devils included Tommy McManus, Jimmy McManus, Colin McKay, and Nick Delpopolo.

The battle against Roselle Park was much closer contest. Although Westfield came up on the “short side of the stick”, the final score was 4419. Tommy McManus, Jimmy

McManus, Craig Hewit, Joey Corea, and Tommy DelDuca registered key victories for the Little Devils.

The results from the Voorhees match were encouraging, but the Little Devils still couldn’t crack the win column. Big wins were posted by John Falzone, Tommy McManus, Nick Delpopolo, Craig Hewit, and Tommy DelDuca.

Raider Mid-Schoolers Maul Union MS Matmen, 39-27

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Middle School matmen met and derailed Union’s squad on January 12. The final score of the match was 39-27 in favor of the Middle School Raiders. Starting off the match for the Raiders was Dan Abrou, who dominated his opponent Allen Nougoerma, pinning him swiftly in the first period.

Haime Gomez quickly followed suit by overpowering his opponent Dominic Siceo, coming out on top after three periods Mike DeNichilo wrestled a tough match and dominated his opponent Vincent Collier, coming out the clear winner after three periods. Mike Walker continued the Raider rally, aggressively pursuing his opponent Chris Terranova to eventually pin him in the third period.

Adam Garrity overpowered his opponent Alex Lordice quickly pinning

him in the second period. Ray Moskal crushed his opponent Kwalry Kheer, pinning him moments into the first period. Matt Loomis completely crushed his opponent Billy Hare, flattening him quickly in the first period. Andrew Loomis completed the Raider assault by completely dominating his opponent Remee Barber crushing and pinning him in the first period.

Raider matmen Yoev Nudell, Gershon Zebovitz, Anton Etanko, Jason Villane and Rup Chatt all wrestled tough matches, eventually falling to their opponents.

The Raider squad is being coached by Mark Dambaugh, a teacher at Terrill Middle School, Terrill Road, Scotch Plains.

Flemington Burns Flames, 30-24

The Fanwood Flames gave the defending league champions their toughest game of the year before falling to Flemington, 30-24, in Garden State League action. Fanwood gave the champions all they could handle, but missed too many easy shots to score a victory.

Brian Halpin had his best scoring output of the year, leading the team with 10 points. Lance Thomas and Sean Young dominated the boards and scored six and four points, respectively. Tiffany Smith and Andrew Colon rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.

In Central Jersey League games, Fanwood lost to North Edison, 4826. The Flames had their most balanced scoring attack of the season. Ricky Lisojo, Sean Young and Brian Halpin pumped in five points each. Lance Thomas and Andrew Colon popped in four points apiece.

The Flames dropped a 56-28 decision to North Brunswick’s A team. Matt Canfield and Travis Morgan had outstanding games with six points each. Lance Thomas was the leading scorer with eight points. D. J. Garrett hit for four points.

The team saw it’s overall record fall to 3-7. The Flames record is 1-1 in Garden State League play and 0-5 in Central Jersey League action.

Senior hoops action at Scotch Plains -Fanwood High School resumed after the holiday break. The Berkeley Heights squad showed that their team’s fitness level didn’t diminish in a 21-point win over Cranford, whose squad was not able to run with the victors. Berkeley Heights rode the 10-foot shooting skills of ex-Union Catholic star Pete Tierney, who was able to break loose and unleash his unerring shooting at will. The sluggish Cranford team was not able to play the effective hustling style it had become known for, characterized by player-coach Lou Koehler as “out of shape.”

Also showing a dedication over the holidays, Team Law looked sharp in

two victories, paced by newly 50year-old Dan Jayson, who is emerging as the league’s top three-point threat and 6’3” Al Everhart in the low post.

Scotch Plains squeaked by North Plainfield, 31-30, in a game 6’6” Joe Zailsky of Scotch Plains described as “ugly.” Scotch Plains was paced by Zailsky’s rebounding and was aided by newcomer Arnie Cohen, who hit three key jumpers when it seemed nobody on Scotch Plains could hit a shot. North Plainfield was paced by Rich Kotuski and 62-year old rookie Pete Szidar, who buried jumpers for a three-pointer and deuce at critical moments in the contest.

Westfield has also discovered a new scoring option in guard Darryl Hall, who has proven effective from three-point range to balance the inside attack paced by Dan Remler.

Although Bryn Mawr College encourages all its third year students to experience a semester abroad, Westfield resident, Sara Mankoski, has expanded her foreign exchange experience to reach from the bush of Australia’s Outback, to the coral formations of the Great Barrier Reef.

For the past five months, Mankoski studied at the University of Melbourne as a resident of Newman College and traveled extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand, returning home via Figi.

After a brief respite, Mankoski reports to the Sea Education Program at Woods Hole, Cape Cod, where under the auspices of Boston University she will study geological, chemical, physical and biological oceanography in preparation for six weeks on the S. S. V. Cramer.
