arm bar, then worked a cradle to take a 7-0 lead into the second period. After adding another three points using a painful power half, Tezucar put Farinas out of his misery in 3:19 with an old-fashioned reverse half and a chin hook.
Blue Devil Tom Hanscom persisted on inflicting punishment on Corey Gary at 160, winning by a, 15-5, majority decision. After being taken down, Hanscom racked up three reversals, a cradle to a headlock nearfall, a cradle nearfall and a Peterson nearfall to emphasize his victory.
Kivetz’s 8-2 victory over Minutemen Captain Dennis Osby was not only important for the team but also quite important to himself for District 11 ranking. Wrestling his best match all season, Kivetz limp-armed a Russian setup and slipped behind Osby for the takedown. From there, he tried to tire out Osby using a stretcher and a power half. Kivetz added a reversal and a two-point nearfall and yielded a reversal to take a 6-2 lead into the third. Kivetz finalized the scoring with a single-leg, spin-behind takedown.
“He (Osby) was second in the districts ahead of me last year,” pointed out Kivetz. “I remember watching him wrestle DeWitt in the finals. I took all that in and said that I really want to beat that guy.”
Kivetz explained his strategy. “I tried to stretch him out a little to see if I could get him a little tired. I knew I wasn’t going to pin him quickly.”
Kivetz added, “He got high in the second period and I turned into him and caught him with a Peterson.”
“He was smart,” said Kurz of Kivetz’s command of his bout. “It will mean a lot. If he scripted it, it couldn’t have gotten much better.”
The final act of persistence overcoming resistance came at 189 when
junior Josh Ray overcame adversity to pin Darrell Leak in 3:07. Leak scored a takedown and a three-point nearfall early in the first period, then added two more nearfalls by the second period.
Once again, Leak scored a takedown and turned Ray to his back. Ray never gave up as he snaked Leak to his back then finished him with a headlock to stretch the lead to 43-24 and to clinch the victory for the Blue Devils.
“Our kids did a great job. Josh Ray had a good wrestler and he never quit on him,” said Kurz.
“In practice, we keep stressing constantly going at them, constantly on the attack and stay on the mat for six minutes. We had three or four kids use the full six minutes. And, they needed it! I don’t care if you are losing 11-0, the match isn’t over until it’s over.”
The Blue Devils improved to 3-0.

KIVETZ, CLARK, SAWICKI GRAB PINS
Soaring Kardinals Stop Devil Matmen, 61-18
By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
Reality struck when a more experienced Kearny Kardinal team swooped into Westfield on January 16 and flew away with a 61-18 victory over the Westfield High School wrestling team. Mike Sawicki, Mike Kivetz and Nick Clark did manage to record falls for the Blue Devils.
Sawicki, wrestling at 112, hit Kardinal Minh Lee with a spin-behind takedown, then turned Lee with a wrist and a half nelson to pick up two more points. Moments later, Sawicki used the same move to show Lee the lights in 1:51. Since the Blue Devils had forfeited the 103 class, the score became tied 6-6.
The Kardinals ran off a string of four falls, a forfeit and a majority decision to take a commanding, 406, lead into the 152-lb class.
Blue Devil Matt Castaldo dropped a close, 3-2, decision to John DiGravina at 152. DiGravina scored two points on a single-leg lift takedown in the first period, then Castaldo escaped. DiGravina hit a sit-out escape in the second period to take a 3-1 lead, then after DiGravina received a warning for stalling, Castaldo escaped for one point. DiGravina held on for the victory.
The Kardinals won by fall at 160 to go ahead, 49-6, then Kivetz made swift work of Brian Wood at 171. Kivetz knocked Wood with a Fireman’s takedown and turned him to his back with a half nelson to take a 5-0 lead. After allowing Wood to escape, Kivetz scored another takedown, then stacked Wood in 1:48.
With the score now, 49-12, Blue Devil Josh Ray did some rolling with
Ben Furtado at 189. Ray scored a takedown and nearly pinned Furtado with a cradle in the first period, but experience paid off for Furtado in the second period when he caught Ray for the fall in 2:31.
At 215, Blue Devil Brian Williams made a fatal mistake when he attempted a difficult Julio roll on a very physical Anthony Distano and got caught halfway through the move in 1:21.
Clark, wrestling at heavyweight, flew into DiMitri Georgolis and scored a double leg takedown and immediately pinned in :16 with a half nelson.
Westfield experienced it first loss of the season and fell to 3-1 while the Kardinals upped their record to 3-2.
