work of Eric Vitale of Brearley with a fall in 1:12. In the semis, he scored a takedown and a two-point nearfall before decking second-seeded Jon Garay of Rahway in 2:55.
“I was annoyed that they seeded Garay ahead of me,” said Feeley. “Initially, he tried to headlock me and I countered it, then picked up some back points. In the second period, he chose down and it was a bad decision on his point.”
Feeley added, “I’m determined to be the county champion. That’s a goal in my life right now.”
Interpretation seemed to determine the outcome of the heavyweight fi
nals between Feeley and Mike Munoz of Roselle Park. After a standing first period, Munoz took a 1-0 lead with an escape. Feeley nailed a double-leg takedown, then Munoz tied the score 2-2 with another escape. Just seconds before the end of the second period, Feeley took the initiative and attempted a takedown, but Munoz slipped behind him to take a 4-2 lead.
Feeley escaped in the third and again chased the shy Munoz all over the mats. After Munoz received his second warning for backing off, Feeley was awarded a penalty point to tie the bout. Still with :30 remaining in regulation, Munoz continued his mat shyness and, in the final seconds, backed off faster than some people can run. The referees just looked on. Time ran out and overtime was to begin. Feeley
continued the attack but Munoz slipped under his arm and around for the takedown to win 6-4.
“Jim had a real good tournament,” said Artigliere. “He’s wrestling better than he has been wrestling all year long and I would have to say the same for Tony (Melendez). They are going to build from here. This is a warm up for the sectionals, districts, regions and states.”
Artigliere commented on Feeley’s bout with Munoz, “He didn’t wrestle a terrible match. Some things could have gone his way obviously that didn’t and I am not even talking about the calls. Just the way he went about them! Hopefully, he is going to correct those errors and, they are going to meet again.”
The afternoon seemed to be filled with several degrees of upsets but none so dramatic as Tezucar’s in the 152-lb. semifinals. Prior to the upset, Tezucar disposed of Carl King from Linden via 17-0, technical fall and Giancarl Pezantez of Brearley by fall in 1:01.
In the semis, Tezucar faced Tom
Coaches Discuss County Wrestling Date Change
By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
The Union County Wrestling Tournament has been one of the last, if not the last, county championship in New Jersey to be contested. For years, many county coaches have expressed their concern for scheduling the tournament to a wiser date earlier in the season.
“This year it really doesn’t affect us since we are not in,” said Westfield High School Head Coach Glen Kurz. “But I can definitely understand why a coach can be concerned about the matches the kids have to wrestle. They could wrestle anywhere from four to six matches here, then go into a sectional tournament.”
Kurz added, “The good part could be that it could be used to your advantage. If you have a good lineup and the kids are doing very well in the counties, they could be mentally ready Petrusko of Rahway, whom he de
feated 16-3 just a week earlier. This time Tezucar went to work, scoring a takedown and two three-point nearfalls to grab an 8-0, first-period lead.
In the second period, from the standing position, Petrusko had Tezucar in a head-in-arm situation and began to fall toward his back. Tezucar appeared to be in control, but suddenly, Petrusko wrapped his leg around Tezucar’s far leg and had him stacked and stuck in 2:16.
Some areas in Pennsylvania have called a form of that baiting maneuver a Cement Mixer, Rahway wrestlers originally called it a D-3, but
that new style has been dubbed, “The Petrusko” according to Rahway Head Coach Fred Stueber.
“We have called the move a D-3 and worked with it in practice,” said Petrusko. “It’s a desperation move and I was down so much that I decided I had nothing to lose.” Petrusko declined to reveal the real secret of the move.
Many wrestlers crumble after a stunning defeat such as that, but not Tezucar. He came back to pin Anthony Alves of Union in 2:00, then won by 15-6, majority decision over previously second-seeded John Donofrio of Cranford who also was the victim of a mild upset in the semis.
“It shows a lot of heart for one of the top kids in the state to lose in the county semifinals and come back to take third,” said Westfield Head
Coach Glen Kurz. “He got himself ready. He had a good wrestler. Donofrio won the title last year. This may have been an awakening for him and he will be ready in the districts.”
Discussing his comeback, Tezucar pointed out, “This is an important tournament but not half as important as the districts. I know that I will be better prepared for the districts and am looking forward to it.”
Tezucar further added, “I will meet them (Petrusko, DeWitt and Donofrio) in the districts. I wrestled well against Donofrio. I controlled the top position very well and I knew that I could work the arm bar from past experiences with him. He is a good competitor.”
Raider Dave Loewinger, seeded first, pinned Dan Genovese of Cranford in 1:21 at 112, then fell to Doug Corso of Rahway in the semis. In the consolations, Loewinger blanked Altay Vigilante of Brearley, 8-0, then received a forfeit to place third. Blue Devil John Leonardis defeated Phil Maffei of Union, 8-3, and later defeated Tom McDermott of Johnson, 8-7, to grab seventh at 112.
At 119, Raider Mike Loewinger defeated Rob Burnett of Rahway, 40, in the quarterfinals. After falling to Brett Vanderveer of Governor Livingston, he defeated Jamar Walker of Elizabeth, 5-2, but was then defeated by Burnett, 3-0, for third place.
Raider Charlie Tripet at 125 pinned Jason Hirth of Johnson in 4:17, then decisioned Joe Ruggerio of Brearley, 7-4. In the semis, he dropped a tough 2-1 decision to first-seeded Graham Markel of Union. Markel won by virtue of a penalty point. Tripet finished fifth.
Raider Mike Tripet, at 135, defeated Chris Dowling of New Providence, 11-9. After losing to champion Craig Frost of Roselle Park, he beat Dan Conclaves of Roselle Catholic before falling to Shawn Stueber of Rahway in 3:53.
Although not placing, Raider Matt DeNichilo picked up two victories by defeating Mark Yospin of Brearley, 9-0, and James Color of Johnson, 132, in the 103-lb. class.
Raider Mike Grabel, at 145, defeated Greg Donofrio of Cranford, 43, in the quarterfinals, then lost a 1210, overtime decision to top-seeded Justin Finnerty of Union in the semis. Grabel scored on two takedowns, five escapes and a warning penalty point. The deciding point may have come in the second period when Grabel was banged with a penalty point for using an illegal full-nelson.
Grabel came back to defeat Dan Freer of Rahway, 6-3, then dropped a 9-5 decision to Joe Majocha of Johnson for third place.
Another mild upset came at 171 when Mike Mergott of Johnson went after last year’s 171-lb. champ Doug Schoening and seized a convincing 8-1 decision in the semis.
“He just beat me in the dual meet in the final seconds. Ever since that time I set a goal to beat him,” said Mergott. “This should help me in the seedings for the districts.”
Blue Devil Mike Kivetz won by a 145, majority decision over Walt Braxton of Rahway, then fell to Craig Howlett of Roselle Catholic in the quarterfinals. Kivetz blazed back in the consolations with a fall in 4:15 over Justin Katz of Brearley, then manhandled Mike Farrell of Governor Livingston, 20-5 to eventually place sixth.
Raider Scott Paterson at 215 edged Blue Devil Brian Williams, 3-2, then had a rock-and-roll, 12-10, win over Mike Harms of Brearley. Later, Paterson was on the short side of an 18-14 decision with Nate Mooney of Roselle Park.
The final upset of the afternoon occurred in the 215-lb. finals when Ishmael Medley of Elizabeth received enough stalling penalty points to defeat previously undefeated Pat Ekstrom of Cranford, 5-4.
Roselle Park took top honors for the third year in a row, totaling 237 followed by Rahway with 214.5. Frost was selected as the Outstanding Wrestler for the lower weights and Medley won the award for the heavier weights.
Probably the best exhibition of talent and showmanship came from Donnie DeFilippis of New Providence at 140. DeFilippis, who defeated Frost,
11-6, on February 6, demonstrated his phenomenal finesse from virtually any position throughout the tournament, especially in the finals when he won by a 19-3, technical fall over Ralf Chavanne in just 3:17.

to go. I would like to say that I would like to keep it this way right now.”
Raider Head Coach Mike Artigliere who withheld five of his varsity wrestlers from the county tournament stated, “I am all for moving the date back. No way it should be at this time. You just can’t wrestle at this level of competition and go into a state tournament three days later and expect to do well.”
“It’s very tough on a team that has to compete in the state sectionals,” said New Providence Head Coach Gary Bremer. “In the counties, many kids may wrestle as many as five bouts and they can get pretty beaten up. Then to have to wrestle in a state sectional match just three days later is very tough. I believe that it really hurts Union County wrestling.”
Union County Wrestling Seeding Chairman, high school coach, former two-time state champion and revered mentor Jerry Sachsel commented, “There are two possibilities. They could set it back a week or even have it around the Christmas holidays. There is plenty of wrestling around this time of the season. So, it might be wiser.”
Perhaps, if some coaches felt that it was necessary to pull several of their varsity wrestlers from the tournament in order to rest them for the sectionals, then maybe even that practice alone may have diluted the quality of the Union County Wrestling Tournament.
