THREE-PRONGED ASSAULT SPEARS VICTORY

Devil Hoop Attack Downs Kardinal Cagers, 59-56 By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Seniors Tom Langton, Maurice Boatwright and Pete Anzelone combined for 48 points as the Westfield High School boys basketball team frustrated Kearny, 59-56, in Westfield on February 9. The clever use of inside-outside scoring tactics knocked the Kardinals out of their defensive game plan.

The strategy took a while to take effect as the Kardinals jumped to a 15-11 lead after the first quarter. They effectively took advantage of a temporary right-side weakness in the Devil defense and hit several jumpers from that side.

Anzelone drew first blood with a left side jumper but the Kardinals quickly scored seven when Kardinals Joe DaSilva hit a layup and Dave Lorenzo hit a two-point jumper, then a three-point jumper. Matt Rosen nailed a right-side jumper, but the Kardinals flew back with a short

jumper to take a 9-4 lead. Boatwright hit a foul shot, but Joe DaSilva hit a right-side jumper. Anzelone found the mark from the right side, then after Joe DaSilva made a foul shot, Anzelone slicked in a layup. Joe DaSilva sank another jumper then Blue Devil Doug Minarik netted the final two points of the quarter.

Langton played mostly a defensive role in the first quarter by pulling down several defensive rebounds. In the second quarter, he played a devastating offensive role as well, scoring 11 points. Langton strategically positioned himself inside and grabbed nearly all of the offensive rebounds, received clever passes and converted them to layups.

“They were small so we basically tried to get the ball inside to Langton,” said Blue Devil Head Coach Kevin Everly of his strategy with Kearny. “If they triple-team or double-team him, that will open up our players on the outside.”

Langton’s mastery of the boards (rebounding) compelled Everly to say, “It was to his advantage when he was playing a team which was a little bit smaller, that he would have a better view of the basket. He is a very important part of our team. If he’s out, it’s a whole different ball game.”

Everly added, “He has long arms and that helps but I would like to

point out that he is also a very good shot blocker. He averages at least five or six blocks a game. When he graduates, we will miss him a lot.”

Kardinal John DaSilva hit a center jumper at the start of the second quarter. Langton received a pass from Minarik and softly laid it in for the score. John DaSilva duplicated his previous jumper, then Langton gathered a rebound and pushed in another layup. Next, Anzelone grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a short jumper to close to within one of the Kardinals.

The Kardinals did not stay dormant as Romero Papin sank a jumper. Anzelone was fouled and hit both of his foul shots. After the Kardinals went ahead, 24-20, Anzelone rebounded his own shot and laid it in for two, then Langton added another layup to tie the score.

Langton was on fire and added another layup to give the Blue Devils a 26-24 lead. Anzelone added two

Raider Boys Finish 4th in Group Track

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School boys track and field team finished in a tie for fourth with Wall at the Group 3 State Track and Field Meet held at Jadwin Gym in Princeton on February 14. The Raiders totaled 18 points. Lakewood won with 40 points.

Raider Blair Woodward cleared 6’6” to take first in the high jump and tied with Josh Minkins of Willingboro in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.82.

Woodward also teamed with Nathan Jones, Dan Harrison and Mike Dixon to come in sixth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:40.2.

Westfield Blue Devil Megan Shutts finished sixth in the 1,600meter run with a time of 5:30.62.

The top six places in each event will compete at the Meet of Champions held at Jadwin Gym on Sunday, February 21.

nine-point run to tie the game, 1919. Osborne hit for two, Bennie Martinez took two steps to his right and banged a three-pointer from the right-center of the arc, Andy Feeley sank a jumper, then Martinez netted a two-pointer. The Blue Devils called time out.

Langton was fouled and made the second of his free throws, then Doug Minarik took the ball out from underneath the basket and found Boatwright open. Boatwright slid in the layup. Next Weber stole the ball and passed to Boatwright who rolled in another layup. Martinez played for the final shot of the half and sank it to make the score 24-21.

Boatwright sank 11 points in the first half and Weber scored eight, two of which were via three-pointers. Jenerette had all eight of his points in the first quarter and Martinez hit all seven of his in the second quarter.

“Bennie was really hurt. He had a pulled groin, but he loosened his bandage and it seemed to help,” said Raider Head Coach Willie Leonardi. “He did hit a nice jumper off a play we called.”

Holding a slight lead, the Blue Devils were not satisfied and outscored the Raiders, 16-11, in the third. Langton hit a free throw, Weber hit a free throw after a technical foul call, then Jim McKeon nailed a jumper and later assisted Wagner on a layup to stretch the lead to 31-21.

Raider Rich Brown rolled in a layup, then Boatwright banged in one from three-point range. McKeon stole the ball and drove in for the layup to give the Blue Devils a 36-23 lead. Raiders Dave Herrmann hit for two, Hal Burwell hit for four, Brown added a layup and Osborne sank two free throws, but the Kardinals came

back with a free throw and a twopoint jumper, making the score, 2827. Langton hit a layup, then teammate Jim McKeon nailed a jumper. Kardinal Steve Hakusa slid in a layup at the buzzer to make the halftime score, 32-29.

Anzelone continued his scoring pace in the second half, but the Kardinals came on strong in the third to regain the lead, 46-43. Since the Kardinals were forced throughout the game to be preoccupied with Anzelone and Langton, Boatwright began his scoring tear in the second half. With less than 2:00 remaining in the game, the Blue Devils battled back to tie the game, then Boatwright sank a decisive three-pointer to seal the victory.

Anzelone finished with 20 points and Langton and Boatwright totaled

14 each. Rosen finished with four points and Jeff Weber scored three.

Especially, in the second half of the season, Anzelone has stepped up his quality of play. Everly commented, “We had a team meeting and I talked to him and said ‘Do not worry about your shots. Just get it done and prove to everybody how good of a player you are.’”

Boatwright’s stellar performance in the second half did not go unrecognized. Everly explained, “Basically what happened was they (Kearny) went to a zone and our goal was to get the ball to the middle. When you get the ball to the middle, the zone collapses in the middle. Then, we teach our kids to look opposite for the guys on the perimeter. There we have Mo (Maurice) or, on top, it’s Matt (Rosen). When Jeff (Weber) looked opposite, Mo was there.”

Kearny 11 21 11 16 59 Westfield 15 14 17 10 56

while Boatwright hit another twopointer before the buzzer.

With a 40-32 lead, the Blue Devils appeared to be on the verge of another victory. Brown sank a free throw and Martinez sank two free throws. Osborne snatched a steal and drove in for the layup, but Boatwright made a major-league, chest-expanding block which electrified the fans. Unfortunately, the electricity in the clock went on the blink and the game was delayed on three occasions while officials attempted to correct the problem.

Unfortunately, for the Blue Devils, after the delay their hands went icy cold. In the final six minutes, only Boatwright scored four points while the Raiders went on to add 12 and to pull out the victory.

“Lately, they have been playing quite well,” Leonardi said of Westfield.

Leonardi commented on the possible reasons for the Raiders’ come back. “We went full-court man-to-man and trapped the ball. We made some steals and scored. Our half-court press seemed to work. We put quicker people out and that got us motivated.”

Leonardi also commented, “We were down a lot. They tried to hold the lead and sometimes when teams do that they get tight. Then, we got lucky. Another key point was Osborne’s three-point play.”
