SPF U9 Sideliners Thump Soccer Warriors, Metros
The Sideliners of the Scotch PlainsFanwood Intercity U9 division opened play in the Rahway Tournament in stunning fashion by defeating the Oldbridge Warriors, 61, and the Colonia Metros, 82, on November 26.
In the first game, the Sideliners fell behind the Warriors, 10, but quickly bounced back for the victory. Michael Scannell and Andrew Smith were flawless in goal as they combined to stop 11
shots. They were assisted defensively by Greg Bencivengo, Danny Gore, Brendan McEvoy and Joseph Ellis who constantly put their bodies between the ball and the net.
Lester Nare was virtually unstoppable on the offensive end as he picked up three goals for the “hat trick”. Thomas Holt and Joseph Del Prete added one each while Ellis scored on a penalty kick. Ellis, McEvoy and Scannell also picked up an assist each in the game.
Against the Metros, the Sideliners again fell behind, 10, but this game was never in question as they limited the Metros to only five shots on goal. Once again, the Sideliner defense was awesome. Bencivengo, Ellis, Nare, Gore, Scannell, Smith and McEvoy completely smothered their opponents.
As good as the defense was, the offense was even sharper. Holt was the offensive star for the Sideliners as he collected two goals. Ellis, Del Prete, McEvoy, Clancy, Nare and Cerimele also tallied a goal each. Ellis, Del Prete, McEvoy and Cerimele each picked up an assist.
FERGUSON SCORES LONE HIGHLANDER TOUCHDOWN
Undefeated Pioneers Defeat Scrappy Highlanders, 257
By FRED LECOMTE
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
The Governor Livingston Highlanders football season concluded on Thanksgiving Day at Leider Field in New Providence with a 257 loss to the undefeated Pioneers.
Undaunted by their opponent’s unblemished 100 record and less than favorable field conditions, both Highlander players and fans had much to cheer about as Highlander senior Jeremy Ferguson rumbled for a twoyard touchdown. The first half ended, favoring New Providence with a narrow 137 edge.
The Pioneers sealed their victory in the third quarter with quarterback Andy Silvagni scoring on a twoyard run, while junior fullback Ron Fiorilli scored on a
eightyard run thus finalizing the score 257.
The Highlanders defense lived up to its stingy reputation, holding the Pioneers in check throughout most of the first quarter. With the ball spotted on the oneyard line on first and goal, senior Mike Farrell halted Tremayne Fogg in his tracks. Fred Williams took care of Fogg on second down, then Marty Maroney and Rob Findlay stopped Fiorilli to set up a fourth and one.
With 5: 09 remaining in the
first quarter, Fogg plunged in from the one. Mike Hieber kicked the extra point giving New Providence a 70 advantage.
Throughout most of the second quarter the Highlanders stiff defense stood up against the Pioneer offensive machine highlighted by junior Tom Robina who recorded a 13yard sack, and the solid play of Williams, Farrell, Mark Felezzola and Maroney.
With 5: 44 remaining in the half, the Pioneers were not to be denied, when sophomore tailback, Wesley Girnius showcased his excellent speed behind a host of interior linemen on a right slant and motored 54 yards into the endzone to extend the Pioneers lead 130.
The Highlanders noted as “a team that never gives up till the final whistle”, began their drive to the Pioneer endzone from their 31. Findlay picked up nineyards on a keeper and Tom Geraghty
drove for the first down. Ferguson scrambled for seven more, putting the ball on the Pioneer 48. Findlay connected with Tim Marcantonio, who totaled 25 yards receiving, for 13 yards. Two plays later, Findlay aired to junior
Steve Bergeski for 15yards, placing the ball on the 11. Then Robina, Felezzola and Farrell provided the blocking as Ferguson, who had 53 total yards, blasted in for the score. K. C. Miller’s kick was good as the scored tightened to 137 with 13 ticks left in the half.
The third quarter was dominated by Pioneer offensive back Tremayne Fogg, carrying for 10 and 17 yards, respectively, placing the ball on the Highlander 17. Avoiding several tackles, Fogg advanced to the nine. Despite stiff resistance by the defense, quarterback Silvagni broke for his twoyard touchdown with 6: 27 on the clock. Findlay and Ferguson nullified the run for extra points as the Pioneers forged ahead 197.
Four minutes later the Pioneers threatened again with the duet of Fogg and Fiorelli, advancing the ball to the Highlander eight. With 0: 16 in the quarter, Fiorelli slithered his way through the Highlander defense, for the touchdown to secure a 257 Pioneer advantage.
The Highlanders, with Miller calling signals and 2: 39 remaining in the game, connected with Ferguson for 17yards to the Pioneer 15. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, a fumble recovery by the Pioneers stalled the drive as the Pioneers preserved their undefeated season.

The Sideliners of the Scotch PlainsFanwood Intercity U9 division capped play in the Rahway Tournament by capturing second place on November 27. After winning their first two games, the Sideliners defeated the Fairfield/ West Essex Lions, 10, to reach the finals.
Against the Lions, the two teams locked horns in a real nail biter. The game was decided when Josef Ellis successfully netted a penalty kick.
The Sideliners had several chances to score as Lester Nare, Thomas Holt, Joseph Del Prete, Angelo Cerimele, Patrick Clancy and Andrew Smith kept constant
pressure on the Lions goalie. However, defense is what won this game. Michael Scannell went the distance in goal and was magnificent in registering the shutout. He was helped out by the aggressive defense of Greg Bencivengo, Danny Gore, Brendan McEvoy and Ellis.
The afternoon game pitted the Sideliners against the Den of Lions from Newark with first place on the line. However, the Sideliner express was finally derailed as they fell by the score of 41.
Bencivengo got the lone score. Del Prete, Nare, Holt, Ellis and Cerimele all had chances but failed to capitalize. Scannell, Gore, McEvoy, Smith and Clancy also turned in a solid game. When the final whistle blew, the Sideliners proudly accepted their hard earned second place trophies as they posted a 31 mark in the tournament.

SPF U9 Cosmos Defeat Bridgewater Boys, 31
The Scotch PlainsFanwood Soccer Association’s Under9 boys Cosmos team defeated Bridgewater, 31, and celebrated the team’s last game of the season.
Bridgewater came on strong immediately and sent a high kick over the head of Cosmos goalie Michael Roth for the first goal. The Cosmos quickly recovered, as Roth thwarted four more Bridgewater attempts and Colin Grimm’s defense helped keep Bridgewater away from the net in the first half.
Cosmos forward Jack Dunphy set up right wing Mark Koransky to score in the first quarter. Michael Bumiller and Eddie Byron also made several goal attempts in the first and second quarters, but they were deflected. Koransky scored again in the second quarter, with help from left wing Huan Nguyen.
Cosmos secondhalf goalie Eddie Byron held off five Bridgewater goal
attempts. Dunphy’s aggressive ball handling and Chris McManus’ solid defense kept Bridgewater from entering Cosmos territory. Forward Zach Peart made several runs at the Bridgewater goal to keep up the pressure.
Cosmos forward Eric Murphy scored the final goal in the third quarter, with help from Dunphy and Grimm. Defenseman Paul Spicer stopped a crucial Bridgewater goal attempt late in the game.
Cosmos Coach Howard Koransky thanked his assistant coaches, Nina Byron and Gene McManus and praised the boys’ efforts.
“The team’s goals at the beginning of the season were to learn how to play better soccer, and to have fun,” Koransky said. “We definitely accomplished those goals, and their parents and I are proud of these boys. It was a pleasure to be a part of this team.”
The Cosmos ended its season 541.
