Killer Bees End Season With 21 Victory Over Union
The U14 Westfield Killer Bees soccer team finished in second place after an very intense and exciting, 21, victory over the Union Quasars on November 21.
The Quasars pulsated with an attack up the middle, keyed by their strong, fast center striker. The Bees stung and paralyzed the Union attack as stoppers Annie Onishi and Maggie Reynolds played close tight defense. Westfield counter attacked up the wings taking advantage of excellent crosses by wings Lauren Purdy and Carrie Hubbard.
The first goal came after fullback Emily MacNeil sent a long pass up to Hubbard on wing. Hubbard dribbled the ball to the corner and made a perfect cross to Gio Palatucci, who buzzed a shot into the net. The Killer Bees held the lead until halftime with solid goal tending by Maria Hove, combined with excellent overlapping defense by fullbacks Lauren Meriton,
Emily Mortenson, Kate Albino and Justine Palme.
In the second half, both teams battled up and down the field. One Quasar shot hit the post and deflected in to tie the score. Westfield stoppers Marykate Mahr and Reynolds then silenced the Quasar striker.
Meanwhile, Laura Shelman and Reynolds continued the attack up the wings with great crossing shots. With only 15 minutes left, Hove at right half brought the ball up from midfield and slid a pass to center half Palatucci, who made a perfect pivot shot for the winning goal.
Scotch Plains PAL Shaves Westfield PAL ‘C’, 136
The Westfield Police Athletic League’s “C” football team ended its season with a 44 record after a 136 loss to Scotch Plains at Kehler Stadium in Westfield on November 20.
Westfield started on offense and got off to a quick start when halfback Sean Ferro ran around left end for a 39yard gain on the game’s second play. Unfortunately, the drive stalled and Westfield turned the ball over on downs at the Scotch Plains 29yard line.
The Raiders then exploded with an eightplay drive culminating in a 20yard touchdown pass. Then, the Raiders extended their lead to 70 when they completed a pass for the extra point.
On the Raiders’ next possession, the Little Blue Devils forced a fumble, which was recovered by Thomas Moore. The Blue Devils cashed in on their opportunity with an impressive eightplay drive of their own. Ferro had the key play when he gained three yards on
a clutch fourth down play to keep the drive alive. Quarterback Mark Boyd gained important yardage and Mike Venezia capped the drive with a 25yard touchdown run offtackle. The extra point attempt failed.
The Blue Devil defense, led by tackles from Derek Anderson, Ryan Yarusi, Sean Sullivan, Kevin Anderson, Chris Sailors and Robert Cox, played well. Nicholas Delpupolo got Westfield’s second turnover with an interception and Moore batted down a Raider pass.
With the Westfield offense struggling, Scotch Plains added a touchdown late in the fourth quarter thanks to excellent field position.
Ferro led Westfield in rushing with 77 yards and Venezia added 52 yards rushing and 10 yards receiving. Defensively, Santo Nardo led the Devils with six tackles, Stanton Sturgis and Ryan Torcicollo each had five, Richard Delaney had four and Eric Scrudato had three.
two plays later, an alert senior Val Wicks smothered a fumble on the 50 to return possession to the seniors.
Brunetto fired to Powell at the 45 where she was flagged by junior Jill Veltri. Leonardis hooked left to the 25 for a huge gain; however, a crucial penalty backed the ball to the senior 49. Next junior Megan Rodd ripped a flag at the junior 42. Despite some key defensive plays by linebacker Jen Korecky, Griffeth later broke loose from the 37 and glided into the
downed by Brian Gallagher at the Cardinal one. Forcing a punt, the Blue Devils took over at the Plainfield 47 and, after Giacone hit Ray for a 30yard gain, the Devils took the lead on Giacone’s quarterback sneak. MacDonald added the PAT.
As in the Hoboken game, when the visitors broke a long touchdown on the first play after a Devil score, Plainfield got its crowd back into the game when Davis took a pitch to the far side, got a couple of nice blocks and raced 66 yards to score. A bad snap caused the PAT to be missed and Westfield held a 76 halftime lead.
The Devils could not take advantage of a blocked punt on Plainfield’s first possession of the second half, but another MacDonald punt rolled dead at the Cardinals twoyard line. On third and six, Davis took the handoff, reversed direction in the backfield and outran everybody for his 94yard touchdown (sound similar to the Linden game?). Sophomore quarterback Mike Lowery ran the PAT and it was 147 Plainfield.
But there was no quit in the Devils. The defense — ends Gallagher and Paul Johnston, tackles Joey Saunders and Kantu Barr, linebackers Ray, David King, Mike Ciacciarelli and Pat Tuohy, and defensive backs Giacone, Mroz and Hanscom — was all over the Cardinals, who had negative 14 yards on their next 10 plays, resulting in two punts and a lost fumble.
Early in the fourth quarter, Westfield was in business at the Plainfield 41 after a short punt. A 15yard pass interference penalty and a 13yard burst by Giacone put the ball at the nine. Jenkins ran for five, but
fumbled, with Ciacciarelli alertly pouncing on the ball to keep the drive alive. On the next play, Giacone scored untouched, thanks to a block by Jenkins that took out two defenders. MacDonald’s PAT was good and with about five minutes left the game was knotted at 14.
Taking over at its 35, Plainfield ran Davis for a yard (Gallagher and Barr on the stop) before taking a fiveyard penalty. But on secondand14, Lowery faked to Davis and Bobby Holloman broke free behind Giacone in the secondary. Lowery’s pass was a wobbler, but Holloman grabbed it and barely outraced Giacone for the goahead score.
Following the kickoff, Westfield’s three plays all lost yardage and after a punt, Plainfield ran out the clock.
Plainfield 0 6 8 6 20 Westfield 0 7 0 7 14
endzone with 5: 41 left in the third quarter to boost the score to 140.
For the remainder of the game, the senior defensive line was
unpenetrable. The fierce wall of Paige Corbett, “Taz” Dennis and
Van Anglen was just too intimidating. Color commentators John Toriello and Brian
Kemps did an outstanding job of analyzing the events of the game and added their unique style of humor. Each shared their opinions and were often in accord as the memorable phrase, “It looks that way to me, John,” was often repeated.

The SPF U12 Express boys soccer team captured second place in the annual West Deptford Thanksgiving tournament, finishing with a 31 record.
The Express defeated the Gaetano FC United, 10, but wasted several opportunities before Joey Dziedzic buried an outside shot, assisted by Joe Cepparulo. Sean Young, Jeff Bell and Brian Osbahr provided a smothering defense. Matt Fleissner and Jeffrey Annese attacked from the wings and Clayton Balch played well at midfield.
Next, the 10 victory against the Haddonfield Dynamos belonged to goalie D. J. Garrett, who was peppered early but refused to yield and made a great save on a breakaway.
The Express battled back and played Haddonfield even until Fleissner scored on an assist from Young. Osbahr and Bell were strong in defense, Jonathan DeFiore was aggressive at midfield and Balch doubled effectively at halfback
and left wing. Against the Cherry Hill United Blast, the Express took control early and won, 20. Bell scored first on a low outside shot that slid past the goalie untouched. Young scored the second goal after a corner kick by DeFiore. Balch, Jack Davis and Mark Ciecura were aggressive in midfield and Fleissner and Matt Hirschhorn pressured the defense the entire game.
The Express lost 21 in the championship game against the Mt. Laurel United Gladiators that dominated the fatigued Express, but eked out the victory on a great shot early in the second half. After Ciecura was tripped, DeFiore took a free kick and Davis converted for the goal. Young, Osbahr, Bell and Cepparrulo played terrific defense to keep the Express in the game.
The Express finished with a 1483 record, including a first and two seconds in tournaments.
SPF U12 Soccer Jazz Finish Second at Rahway Tourney
The Scotch PlainsFanwood Jazz girls intercity soccer team scored three straight victories to earn second place in the girls U12 division of the Rahway Thanksgiving Tournament. The Jazz endured an early loss to the eventual tournament winner, but won their last three games.
Against the Staten Island Lasers, Lindsey Fitzgerald scored from 18 yards out. Later, Becca McGuire booted to Gaby Falco, who then streaked up the left side where she passed to Lauren Mains. Mains headed to Shannon Hauser who added the insurance goal with a rifle shot into the far corner.
Next, against the Edison Comets, the game was scoreless until the closing minutes. Maddie Wasser stole the ball and ripped an outlet pass to Meaghan Kelly at midfield. Kelly streaked ahead on a breakaway, but as the goalie came out to cut the angle, Kelly alertly slipped the ball to Mains who poked the ball into
the open net for a 10 victory. Finally, the Jazz battled Berkeley Heights and dominated early. Lauren Hercel and Bitsy Kipping both took shots that just missed their marks. At the 20minute mark Kristen Henkels stopped a Berkeley rush and passed to Jessica Churgin. Churgin passed to Jess McGarry who blasted a shot that was knocked away by the goalie, but Mains pounced on the rebound and rippled the net.
In the second half, the Jazz continued their attack as Brian Falco scorched a shot from 20 yards away. The goalie made the save, but the defense failed to clear and Loni Kaye nailed a shot just inside the left post. The Jazz held on to win 21.
