play. Later, now on offense, Jones was seen dragging Farmer tacklers several yards before being brought down. A slick reverse to Raider Anthony Cary, resulted in a 13yard gain to the Farmer seven. Although on the verge of scoring, the Farmer defense held and took over at the ten.
From there the Farmers engineered a 90yard touchdown march. A 27yard reception by DeFrancesco followed by respective nine and 14yard receptions by Bubnowski quickly placed the ball on the Raider 40. A 22yard keeper by Devlin and a 17yard touchdown pass to Taji Alexander with 1: 37 left in the third quarter, put the Farmers back in the game.
A short period of shaky play by the Raiders was extinguished when Jones made a leaping interception at the ten. But the ball slipped from his fingers and, fortunately, the omnipresent linebacker Dave Herrmann grabbed it at the three.
“It feels real good to beat Union,” commented Herrmann. “I’m glad to be a Raider. We proved ourselves today. It is the first time that we beat Union. The seniors were ready. It
was the last time that we would wear the Raider blue. It is the greatest day of my life right now!”
Later, with 56 seconds remaining in the game, Harold Burwell sealed the victory by recovering a Farmer fumble at the Raider seven. When the time ran out, coach Ciccotelli was doused with water from a Gatorade
bucket. “It was cold,” expressed an invigorated Ciccotelli who attempted to
explain the great turnaround. “I wish that I could figure it out. We talked to other
coaches about it. You never know. Today, our main concern after that tough loss was would they be ready to play today. And they did. They are a great group of kids.”
Ciccotelli pointed out, “We’re a good football team. We had a few blips. It’s tough. We had one Sunday but the kids showed their character.”
The Raiders completed their season at 92 while the Farmers finished at 83.

SCHALLER, SALMOND LEAD DEVILS IN SCORING
Heart, Determination Define Lady Devils’ Soccer Season
By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
Heart and fierce determination defined the demeanor of the Westfield High School girls soccer team this season. Finishing with a very respectable, 1433 record, the Blue Devils were led by TriCaptains Donna Schaller and Kristen Salmond on offense and Leigh Kendrick on defense.
The Devil girls were competitive in every game and never got blown out. Their first and worst loss came in the Union County quarterfinals where they were stunned by the Crusaders of A. L. Johnson, 31. Battling down to the wire, the Devil girls suffered a heartbreaking, 21, loss at the feet of then undefeated Kearny. Then finally, in the North Jersey Section 2 finals, a badhop bounce gave the Rams of Randolph a 10 victory over the Devils.
Earlier in the season, on September 18, the Blue Devils tied a very strong East Brunswick team, 33. In that game, junior goalkeeper Michelle Meglaughlin had probably her most outstanding game of the year as she made several remarkable saves. Four days later, the Blue Devils deadlocked with toptwenty ranked Cranford, 11.
The Blue Devils outscored opponents 9015 and shared the scoring wealth as no less than 20 girls managed to ripple the nets. In 15 games, Meglaughlin had 107 saves, many of them superb, recorded six shutouts and yielded 14 goals for a 7.6 savepergame average. Freshman backup keeper Kelly Schmidt had 15 saves, allowed one goal and recorded four shutouts.
Schaller led the Devils with 16 goals while Salmond led in assists with 12. Schaller’s 10 assists and Salmond’s 14 goals placed them in a tie for team points with 26. Both Schaller and Salmond were the heart of the offense and demonstrated a fearless ability to not give ground to
opponents. Junior Susan Williams was third in team points with 16, 12 goals and four assists. Juniors Gwyn Lederman, with six goals and nine assists, and Alex Lee, with seven goals and eight assists, tied for fourth in points with 15. Sophomore Morgan Lang ripped in nine goals and set up three assists for 12 points and senior Valerie Griffeth banged in five goals and contributed six assists for 11 points.
Sophomore Jennifer Hayes netted two goals and abetted in five assists while junior Jen Korecky had one goal and four assists. Junior Taryn Wyckoff booted three goals and added one assist and senior Erika Van Anglen had one goal and three assists. Juniors Kerri Anness and Melissa Fry, with one goal and two assists each, and Stacy Donohue, with three goals, finished with three team points apiece.
Although a mainstay on defense, Kendrick did get her day in the offensive sun with one goal and one assist.
Freshman Stacy Spass also had a goal and an assist while seniors
Kristen Gundrum and Stevie Larson, junior Elisa Cognetti
and sophomore Elyse Goldweitz contributed one goal
apiece. S a l m o n d completed her high school soccer career ranked 14th on the AllTime Westfield High School scoring list with 35 goals and 26 assists
for 61 points. S c h a l l e r
r a n k e d 16th with
29 goals and 22
assists. Seven veterans will be lost to graduation; however, nine polished juniors, three sophomores and three talented freshmen, not counting some special hidden speed and talent from the Union County Champion junior varsity squad, will offer the Blue Devils a very promising season next year.
