"Sunflowers" by Vincent Van Gogh

Few things in life are guaranteed. But, one thing is for certain: turn on your radio and you will more than likely hear the Latin crooning of the latest suave sensation, Ricky Martin. Songs like "Livin' La Vida Loca" and "The Cup of Life" are dominating the airwaves and teenage and (I'll admit it) grown women are tumbling over like dominoes when his image flashes on the television screen. Even Ricky himself confided that he is aware that everyone has their 15 minutes of fame. Sink or swim, he's going to enjoy his.

MTV or Music Television (for those of you who are not of the MTV generation) is wholeheartedly supporting the Ricky Phenomenon. And here is another guarantee: he will be hauling quite a number of MTV Music Awards off stage on September 9 and thousands of screaming fans will be sure to follow. Ricky is nominated for Video of the Year, Viewer's Choice and Best Pop Video, all for "Livin' La Vida Loca." Who said those days as a member of Menudo would amount to nothing?

While they have grabbed the hearts of the teeny- bopper set since their debut two years ago, The Backstreet Boys will most likely grab some of those MTV awards along the way. Although, their song, "I Want It That Way," is competing heavily with Ricky's chart- topper. The group of five is up for Video of the Year, Viewer's Choice and Best Pop Video as well. May the best heartthrob( s) win.

The MTV Music Awards is well- known for celebrating those musicians who are at the top of their game, on the front covers of

Teen Beat and Rolling Stone and dominating the morning shows of radio stations such as Z- 100 and KTU. But, let's face it, folks – these nominees are having their 15 minutes of fame. New Kids on the Block had theirs and so did Michael Jackson. Need I mention those crazes? Enough said.

So, here are my predictions for the MTV Music Awards:

Vincent Van Gogh was the epitome of French Impressionism. From the swirling sky in "Starry Night" to the striking poverty featured in "The Potato Eaters," his work has always been easy to identify with and tends to evoke strong emotions while appealing to the eye.

Motivated by an interest in religion, Van Gogh tried to become a Protestant minister, but it is rumored that he was so extreme in his views and personality that he was rejected by the Protestant society.

Therefore, his brother, Theodore Van Gogh, decided to finance Vincent's career as a painter in Paris. ToulouseLautrec, Gauguin, Pissarro and Seurat became the painter's great influences during his time in Paris.

In 1888, he moved to Arles where it is reported that he had his first bout with insanity. While visited by Gauguin, Van Gogh

cut off his ear. This action is perhaps just as famous as his artwork.

Committed to a mental hospital in 1889, Van Gogh continued to paint until he left in 1890 for his brother's home in Paris. After later settling with a friend of Cezanne and Gauguin, Dr. Gachet, he committed suicide.

LAHASKA, Pa. —Scarecrows and crisp apple dumplings drizzled with vanilla sauce in the fall. Iced gingerbread houses and boutiques laced with white lights in the winter. Succulent strawberries and tiny teddy bears in the summer. Welcome to Peddler's Village in Lahaska, Pa.

If it seems too early to think about watching the leaves turn colors, painting pumpkins or erecting scarecrows, then you are missing out on planning one of the most ideal vacations which is only an hour away.

History

This 18th century village which was established by Earl Hart Jamison in the early 1960s began as a farmer's chicken barn with a hatchery and a group of chicken coops. It is now the home to 75 quaint specialty boutiques and restaurants which are familiar to the Westfield and Scotch Plains- Fanwood area, but far away from the hub- bub of the Metropolitan area.

Where to Shop

What else makes Peddler's so unique? "It's not a mall for one thing," revealed Public Relations Manager Judith Goldschmidt. "We offer a beautiful environment that is relaxed and family- friendly with personal service. There are no chain stores. There are mom and pop shops which offer an incredible array of merchandise."

One of the shops, Zephyr Gallery, which is owned by the mother- daughter team of Toby Quitel and Melissa Paterson, offers the purchase of whimsical pottery, American crafts, wearable art and handcrafted jewelry.

"We're fresh, fun, colorful and unique," said Ms. Paterson, adding that Peddler's is a shopping destination and not just a "tourist trap."

"It's like being in the country every day," mused Helen Cuff, manager of Artisan's Gallery. She added that the village is comprised of a "family of shopkeepers" with special camaraderie who are a part of a merchant's group that helps to design and develop the growth of Peddler's Village. Kaleidoscopes, eclectically painted furniture, stained glass and other treasures are spotlighted at Ms. Cuff's shop which has been a staple at Peddler's for 18 years.

Pine Wreath & Candle, Ltd. equals Christmas all year round with specialties such as Christopher Radko ornaments, brass and

candle accessories and holiday adornments, and of course, all types of candles imaginable.

"People come back time and again," noted Jim Groman of Pine Wreath & Candle. He noted that it is rewarding to find customers who remember the store for its unique offerings. He recalled customers he met up with in Germany who

enjoyed his shop which he believes is a great part of the Peddler's family.

Everything imaginable is c h o c o l a t e dipped at Skip's Candy Corner. Finely crafted quilts and wall hangings are available at Quilts I n c r e d i b l e . Children can find their favorite playthings among the vast array of dolls and collectibles at The Village Doll Shoppe.

Would you like to sample a premium assortment of wines? Visit Chaddsford Winery. Bring home a

savory basket of imported cheeses from Grandpa Hicks Cheese & Gourmet. Grandpa Hicks is also known to peddle freshly- squeezed lemonade and homemade pretzels in a giant green wagon toward the entrance of the village.

Where to Dine

If this all sounds too much like a Utopian getaway, you're right on the mark. When it's time to stop shopping and the aromas of the restaurants start to tempt, Peddler's Village offers a string of fine restaurants to attract any mood or mode of hunger.

Mile- high sandwiches and Chicago- style pizza are available at Hart's Tavern; The Spotted Hog lures with piles of nachos and delectable pasta dishes; Jenny's Bistro greets diners with Victorian elegance; Animal Crackers features everything from smoothies to burgers and Cock n' Bull tempts with buffets, fresh seafood and hand- carved roasts.

Scarecrow Festival

Pretty soon, scarecrows will be popping up all around Peddler's and they probably won't look as familiar

as the beloved scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. Instead, they're bound to be glitzier, bursting with colors, textures and fabrics. Some will probably have their own themes such as "Gourd Vadar and Luke Strawalker."

Why the new visitors? Peddler's will be hosting its 21st Annual Scarecrow Festival, complete with a competition and display. Over $5,600 will be available in cash prizes.

The festival, which is slated for Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19, from 10 a. m. to 5: 30 p. m. will include activities for children of all ages. Scarecrow- making workshops, magic shows, a stiltwalker, a Farm Heritage Show and the Tim Janis Ensemble will be held on Saturday. The workshops will continue on Sunday with the return of the ensemble, heritage show and stiltwalker. A country music show and pumpkin painting will be available for children of all ages.

The competition will be held from Monday, September 13, to Halloween. Scarecrows will be judged in the following categories: A Scarecrow

Whirligig, An Extraordinary Contemporary Scarecrow, A Traditional Scarecrow and The Amateur Scarecrow.

Other Festivities

The Apple Festival, which is celebrated on Saturday and Sunday, November 6 and 7, highlights everything apple. Country apple butter is cooked over an open fire. Pie- eating contests and those aforementioned dumplings are top fare.

For full details on the village, other annual festivals or rules and regulations for the competition, please call (215) 794- 4000 or visit www. peddlersvillage. com.

In Closing

On a personal note, Peddler's Village has been a second home since early childhood. There is no greater escape which provides warmth and hospitality.

In the words of my mother as she looks around Peddler's Village before getting in the car after a day of making memories, "I could come here again and again."

PEDDLER'S ARTIST… Painting with all of the colors she can find, this little girl enjoys the pumpkin painting portion of the Scarecrow Festival at Peddler's Village in Lahaska, Pa. which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19, from 10 a. m.

WINNING ENTRY… This scarecrow, 'Little Girls Dreams' garnered Third Place in the Amateur Scarecrow category of the 1998 Scarecrow Competition at Peddler's Village. THE WARMTH OF THE SEASON… All of the colors of

fall and the spirit of the scarecrow season come to life at Peddler's Village.

SCOTCH PLAINS — The 25th Annual Labor Day Italian Festival will be held from Friday, September 3, to Monday, September 6, from 5 to 11 p. m., each day on the grounds of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church on Westfield Avenue in Scotch Plains.

The festival, hosted by the Scotch Plains Chapter of UNICO National, an Italian- American service organization, in conjunction with the church, will celebrate the community's Italian- American heritage.

The Italian festival began years ago to honor St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the township's sizable Italian- American population emigrating from Montazzoli, Italy, Province of Chieti.

The festival was resurrected after a 10- year hiatus to honor the traditions of the Italian- American population and to share those traditions with the community. The event has been held without interruption since 1975.

The church parking lot will be transformed into an old- fashioned street festival. Booths will offer Italian delicacies of mussels, clams, pizza, calzones, zeppole, pasta, steak and pepper sandwiches, sausage and pepper sandwiches, meatball sandwiches and Italian pastries.

There will be rides and games throughout the four- day event. Offpremise raffle tickets are being sold for 50/ 50 drawing scheduled for September 6 at 10 p. m. on the church grounds.

To purchase raffle tickets, please contact the rectory of St. Bartholomew Church at (908) 322- 5192.
