– Obituaries – Reverend David S. Fowler, Sr., 78, Founded Various Area Churches
The Reverend David Scott Fowler, Sr., 78, of Plainfield died on Thursday, August 5, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Kershaw County, S. C., he was a resident of Plainfield for 36 years.
Reverend Fowler was the founder of the Queen City Baptist Church in Plainfield; the founder and Pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church in Scotch Plains; the founder of the Miracle BaptistChurch andtheChristChurch of Transformation and former Pastor
of the Second Baptist Church in Metuchen.
He was a Fraternal Brother of Rosicrucian Order A.M.O.R.C. Reverend Fowler was installed on January 28, 1990, as the 1990 President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People of Plainfield, Branch No. 2100.
He was the owner and operator of Fowler’s Garden Center in Plainfield for 20 years.
Reverend Fowler held doctoral degrees in psychology, metaphysics and divinity, as well as a certificate of merit in theology.
Surviving are his wife, Docia Fowler;two sons,CuttinoM.Fowler, Sr. and David S. Fowler, Jr., both of Plainfield; four daughters, Eleanor Ashley of Montgomery, Ala., the ReverendEstelleSeymour,Catherine Hemphill and Mary F. Timmons, all of Plainfield; three sisters, Evangelist Tyre Provard of Columbia, S.C., Evangelist Janei Stewart of Piscataway and Elizabeth Jasper of Plainfield; four brothers, Deacon Andrew Fowler, Jr. and Deacon Benjamin Fowler, both of Plainfield, the Reverend Willie Fowler of Scotch Plains and Deacon Cal Fowler of Boykin, S.C.;ninegrandchildrenand nine great-grandchildren.

Michael Ginda, 82, Commercial Painter; Saw Action at Battle for Midway Island
Michael R. Ginda, 82, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, August 6, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Carteret, he moved to Scotch Plains in 1947.
Mr. Ginda had been a commercial painter with the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades LocalNo.1005 ofPerthAmboysince 1947, retiring in 1978.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Monsignor Watterson CouncilNo. 1711ofWestfield;Fourth Degree Honor Guard with Watchung Knights of Columbus; a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2314 of Carteret, and Past President of the Jim Beam Bottle Club of the Jersey Jackpot.
He was also a Santa Claus volunteer for the Mount Hope Orphanage and Knights of Columbus councils; an usher, church feast volunteer and Holy Name Society member at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, and a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Eagles in Plainfield and the Sierra Club of
Union County West. Mr. Ginda was a 1947 graduate of the School of Horology in Newark, a school of watch, jewelry repair and consignment study.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was assigned to various ships in the Pacific, including the aircraft carrier
U.S.S. Yorktown. Mr. Ginda was aboardthe YorktownduringtheBattle of Midway Island in June of 1942 when the ship, listing and disabled by Japanese dive bombers, was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine. Before the war, he had served with the United States Merchant Marine.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Kostyz Ginda, and a daughter, Roberta Ginda-Vrachos.
A funeral service was conducted on Monday, August 9, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, followed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.

Kathleen Connolly, 77, Legal Secretary For Many Years at Westfield Firms
Kathleen Connolly, 77, of Westfield died on Saturday, August 7, at The Woodlands in Plainfield.
Born in New Bedford, Mass., she moved to Westfield in 1955.
Mrs. Connolly had been a legal secretary for many years at firms such as Hooley, Butler, DiFrancesco &Kelly;Neale F.Hooley,andSnevily & Eli, all of Westfield, before retiring in 1994.
She was a communicant of the Holy TrinityRomanCatholicChurch
in Westfield. Surviving are a sister, Mary Gleason of Sun City Center, Fla.; two nephews and two nieces.
A Funeral Liturgy was held yesterday, Wednesday, August 11, at the Holy Trinity Church. Interment was at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Adelaide Kirn, 79, Teacher’s Aide For Westfield Board of Education
Adelaide “Addie” Berris Kirn, 79, ofWestfield diedonTuesday,August 3, in Rahway Hospital.
Born in Perth Amboy, she lived in Westfield since 1954.
Mrs. Kirn had been employed by Colgate-Palmolive in Jersey City, J. P. Stevens Company in New York City and the Westfield Board of Education as a teacher’s aide at Grant and Jefferson Elementary Schools during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
She was a communicant of St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield and a member of the Catholic Golden Age organization.
While in high school, Mrs. Kirn was a member of the National Honor Society.
She was predeceased by a brother, Michael Berris.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, A. Fred Kirn; two daughters, Patty DelDuca of Westfield and Susan Davis of Sudbury, Mass.; a son, Peter Kirn of Short Hills; a brother, William Berris of Toms River and eight grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Friday, August 6, at 10 a.m. in St. Helen’s Church. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Concha Fiallo,88,ofMountainside died on Thursday, July 5, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba, she came to the United States in 1961 and was a longtime resident of Mountainside.
Mrs. Fiallo was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
She was predeceased by her husband, Mario Fiallo, in 1990.
Surviving are her daughter, Virginia Perez-Santalla Signorelli; five sisters; two brothers, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Arthur T. Fell, 74, Was Army Veteran, Insurance Executive at Sedgwick James
Arthur T. Fell, 74, of Bethlehem, Pa., died on Tuesday, August 3, at Muhlenberg Hospital Center in Bethlehem.
Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Fanwood for 45 years before moving to Bethlehem in February.
Mr. Fell had been an insurance broker before retiring as Executive Vice-President ofSedgwickJamesin New York City in 1992.
He was a member of the Faith Lutheran ChurchinNewProvidence.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in World War II.
He was predeceased by his wife, Inga Brown Fell, in 1992.
Surviving are two sons, Barry Fell of Bethlehem and Roger Fell of Wayne, Pa.; two daughters, Debbie Fell of East Brunswick and Linda Fell of Mount Laurel and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday,August7, attheFaithLutheran Church. Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Louis Case, Jr., 71, Transco Engineer; Pipeline and Construction Inspector
Louis C. Case, Jr., 71, of Westfield died on Saturday, August 7, in Rahway Hospital.
Born in McDonald, Pa., he had lived in Clarksburg, W. Va., and in Old Bridge before moving to Westfield 31 years ago.
Mr. Case had been a construction inspector with the Middlesex County Utilities Authority for 10 years before retiring. Prior to that, he had worked as an oil and gas engineer for Transco and as a pipeline inspector for Brown and Root in North Slope, Alaska, while the pipeline was being built.
He earned a degree in engineering from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W. Va.
He was a member of the West Virginia University Alumni Association, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Northern New Jersey, the Alaska Shrine and the American Legion of Westfield.
He served in the United States Marine Corps during peacetime.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, BarbaraCase; threesons,LouisCase, 3rd of Yorktown, Va., Russell Case of Mechanic Falls, Me., and James Case of Westfield; a sister, Pauline
Safranekof Carniegie,Pa.,andseven grandchildren.

James Story Lee, 85, Army Veteran; Was Executive at Paper Companies
James Story Lee, 85, of Mountainside died on Tuesday, August 3, in Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown.
Born in Cranford, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Mountainside in 1972.
Mr. Lee had been a general sales manager for the Ris Paper Company in New York City for 10 years, retiring in 1989. Prior to that, he had worked in the same capacity for the John F. Sarle Paper Company for nine years, after retiring as president of the J. J. Lee Paper Company in New York City.
Mr.Lee directedseveralskischools and was one of the first members of the National Ski Patrol. He was also a member of the Westfield Historical Society.
Hewasa communicantofSt.Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, he achieved the rank of Lieutenant serving with the 10th Mountain Division.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Hope Gallaway Lee; two daughters, Mary L. Andrews of Jacobus, Pa. and Nancy Lee Rice of Asheville, N.C.; a sister, E. Harriet Lee of Westfield; a brother, Robert Lee of Whitehouse; 11 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 10, in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield.

Walter F. Moser, 82, Was Fire Lieutenant, Rescue Squad Volunteer in Scotch Plains
Walter F. Moser, 82, died on Monday, August 9, at his home in Scotch Plains.
Born and raised in Jersey City, he moved to Scotch Plains in 1952.
Mr. Moser was employed for 23 years by the Crucible Steel Company of America in Harrison as a Maintenance Supervisor, retiring in 1968. He subsequently had worked for H.F. Butler Corporation of Union as a Plant Engineer for 15 years, retiring in 1985.
He was an active member of the Scotch Plains Volunteer Rescue Squad. Mr. Moser was also a member of the Scotch Plains Fire Department for 31 years, retiring as a Lieutenant of Company No. 1.
He was a communicant of the First United Methodist Church of Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife, Lois Dietz Moser; two sons, Thomas Moser and Gordon Moser; a brother, Donald Moser of Thompsontown, Pa., and five grandchildren.
A prayer service was held on Tuesday, August 10, at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood. Interment was private.

Gordon Harvey Batten, 70, of Mountainside died on Saturday, August 7, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Mr. Batten had lived in Fanwood and Westfield before moving to Mountainside over 35 years ago.
He worked in the long lines communication division of CBS in New York City for 30 years before retiring 20 years ago.
He volunteered with Overlook Hospital for many years.
He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Batten, and a daughter, Anne Batten.
Surviving are a son, Bruce Batten of Mountainside, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were private and held under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Woodford James Mooers, Jr., 76, ofWestfield diedonMonday,August 9, in the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center at East Orange.
Born in Phoebus, Va., he had lived in Atlantic City and in New York State before moving to Westfield many years ago.
Mr. Mooers had been employed as an electrical engineer by IBM in East Fishkill, N.Y. before retiring. During his career, he invented many devices whichwerepatented,including a high speed rectifier used by Westinghouse Corporation in a lunar mission.
Hewasacombat pilotintheUnited States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Mooers was awarded the Gold Star for outstanding service as an air combat pilot.
A graduate of the University of Connecticut, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.
He was predeceased by his parents, Woodford J. and Beatrice Rowe Mooers; a sister, Muriel Mooers and a brother, William Mooers.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Genevieve FarrahMooers;threedaughters,MarciaHill ofAshland,Mass.,Kim Leo of Clinton Corners, N.Y. and Julia Diddell of Westfield; a son, Woodford James Mooers, 3rd of Mahwah; a sister, Una Osrud of Vestal, N.Y.; three brothers, Myran Mooers of Miami, Fla., Eugene Mooers of Placentia, Calif. and Carroll Mooers of St. Petersburg, Fla., and three grandchildren.

First United Methodist Church in Westfield. Interment will be held today, Thursday, August 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery in Arneytown.

Born in Kearny, he had lived in Scotch Plains for 37 years before moving to Whiting 16 years ago.
Mr. Gillman had been a sales engineer with Weston Electrical Instrument in Newark for over 30 years before retiring in 1983.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth F. Gillman; a daughter, Barbara Vreeland, and a sister, Lois Zulli.
Private funeral services were arranged by the Anderson Campbell Funeral Home in Whiting.

Elizabeth M. Jenkins of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, August 8, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Waycross, Ga., she lived in Scotch Plains for 30 years. She also maintained a residence in Tarpon Springs, Fla.
Mrs. Jenkins had been the manager of Benefits at AT&T-Bell Labs in Murray Hill, then Short Hills, before retiring in 1991.
She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Crescent Oaks Country Club in Tarpon Springs, as well as St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Jenkins, in 1995, and by her mother, Mattie Gottie, in March of this year.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Jenkins of Scotch Plains.
The funeral will take place at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, August 12, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood. A Mass will follow at
11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.

She was a member of the 3M Club and the Woman’s Fellowship, both of the United Church of Christ in Newark.

Mr. Franzyshen was employed at Dean Oil Company in Fanwood for 45 years before retiring in 1988.
He was an active member of the Elizabeth Avenue Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years; a member of the Board of Fire Commissioners – Fire District I, Franklin Township and past exalted ruler of the Bound Brook Elks, BPOE No. 1388.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church in South Bound Brook.
Hewas predeceasedbythreebrothers, Edward Franzyshen, John Franzyshen and Frank Franzyshen, and three sisters, Helen Franzyshen, Ethel Franzyshen and Josephine Franzyshen.
