Westfield Blue Devil Classic Track and Field Results:

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School boys won four events and the girls won two at the Blue Devil Classic held at Gary Kehler Stadium in Westfield on April 17. Raiders Blair Woodward and Nathan Jones set a new meet record in the team long jump event by totaling 42’ 6.25”. Woodward soared 21’ 6” and Jones soared 21’ .5”. The Westfield girls broke into the win column in the team long jump and in the 3,200meter relay.

Immaculata Tops Highlanders, 19-5

After a decisive victory against Union, the Governor Livingston Highlanders faced Immaculata on April 15 in Berkeley Heights only to get shelled, 19-5. The Highlanders never regained their composure after playing a solid first inning.

The Spartans jumped on pitcher Bobby Phillips collecting six runs on six hits taking a demanding 6-0 lead. The Highlanders countered in the bottom of the first collecting two hits and three straight walks. The runs were scored on a sacrifice blast off the bat of Eric Cantagallo scoring Mark Cantagallo and Terence Reilly. Jason Guidicipietro narrowed the score 6-4 with his two RBI single driving in Hank Hansen and Pete Caggiano.

Immaculata never looked back in the top of the second, slugging the Highlanders for nine runs. The other lone run for the Highlanders came in the third inning on an RBI single by Reilly. Immaculata scored twice in the fourth on a solo blast by Kevin Cust and again with two runs in the fifth accounting for their sixth-consecutive win. Governor Livingston slipped to 4-3.

Highlanders Level Summit Boys, 11-1

The Governor Livingston High School baseball team unloaded on the Summit Hilltoppers, 11-1, at the Millburn Tournament on April 17, Senior Bobby Phillips tossed a three-hitter for the Highlanders.

The Highlanders broke the game wide open by trampling the plate four times in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Eric Cantagallo ripped a double for the Highlanders who upped their record to 6-3.

Lady Spartans Skim Highlanders, 2-1

Kelly Tigera scored the winning run on a throwing error in the 15th inning as the Immaculata High School softball team won the clash of undefeated teams by defeating Governor Livingston, 2-1, in Branchburg on April 15. Spartan Erica Bell had 19 strikeouts and Highlander Gina Turturiello had 15.

The Highlanders slipped to 4-1 while the Spartans improved to 6-0.
