Highlanders Outlast Baseball Lions, 11-10
By FRED LECOMTE
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
Despite a brief scare, the Highlanders of Governor Livingston High School rose to the occasion in handling Roselle Catholic in a topsy-turvy, 11-10, slugfest in Berkeley Heights on April 6. Slugger Mark Cantagallo crushed a solo homer, a double and a single to lead the Highlanders.
The offensive whirlwind whistled furiously in the first three innings. Derrick Writenour made his mound debut for the Highlanders giving up just one hit, but the Lions took advantage of errors and scored two runs in the top of the first inning.
The Highlanders put their bats to work immediately. Chris Butler led off the bottom of the first with a walk followed by a barrage of hits. Mark Cantagallo hit what appeared to be a home run over the center field fence, but the umpires did not see it that way and called it a ground rule RBI double. Eric Cantagallo followed his with an RBI double of his own.
Terence Reilly clobbered an RBI triple, then right fielder Hank Hansen connected with an RBI double to center. Frank Cavallo slapped an RBI single and Jason Guidicipietro followed with a single, accounting for seven hits and five runs.
With a 5-2 lead in the top of the second, the Highlanders brought Mike Farrell in to relieve Writenour. Unfortunately for the Highlanders,
the Lions continued with their own hitting rampage, scoring six runs on just five hits to make the score 8-5.
Reilly took over the pitching duties and silenced the Lion offense. In the bottom of the second, Mark Cantagallo connected with a deep shot into center field for his first home run of the season. The Highlanders scored another run on two hits to close the Lion lead to 8-7.
Reilly again silenced the Lions in the third. The Highlanders came back strong with three hits of their own knocking in two more runs and finally took the lead by a score of 9-8.
Reilly continued to mute the Lions' roar to a meow, allowing no base hits in the top of the fourth, although a tying run did score. In the bottom of the fourth, the Highlanders' offense reacted with a walk by Reilly who then stole second. Hansen stepped up and delivered a deep shot into center for a two-run homer making the score 11-9.
In the top of the sixth, Reilly moved the ball around very effectively allowing just one hit and one unearned run. In the seventh, Highlander Head Coach Bill Howard called on Bobby Phillips to secure the victory. Phillips came through in impressive fashion for his first save of the year. Reilly got the win and the Highlanders elevated their record to 3-1.
