KASLUSKY, VASQUEZ EACH GRAB TWO FIRSTS
Blue Devil Track Men Rush Past Cranford Boys, 94-31 By DAVID B. CORBIN

Senior Gordon Kaslusky and junior Francisco Vasquez each grabbed two firsts to lead the Westfield High School boys track and field team past the Cranford High School boys, 9431, at Gary Kehler Stadium in Westfield on April 6. The Blue Devils took first in 11 of the 15 events.
Kaslusky crossed the finish line in 2:03.2 to win the 800-meters which was swept by the Blue Devils. John Cognetti placed second at 2:06.1 followed by Brian Dowd at 2:08.2.
Kaslusky at :54 teamed with Dan Egan, Jacob Albertson and Noriyuki Teraoki, each with times of :59.9, to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:56.
Vasquez flew over the 110-hurdles and finished first with a time of 19.7 followed by teammate Miguel Cruz at 22.1. Vasquez edged teammate Seth Augenstein in the 200-meters 24.3 to 24.7 and Blue Devil Erik Zimac was just behind with a time of 24.8 to complete the sweep.
Vasquez also placed second in the 400-meters at 1:01.8 and team
mate Jason Dreyer took third at 1:05.7. Augenstein won the 100meter dash with a time of 12.2 followed by Zimac at 12.3. Cruz soared 18' 4.5" to take first in another Blue Devil sweep in the long jump. Ed Harry was second at 17' 8.75" and John Kazasis was third at 16' 7.25". Harry also cleared 4' 8" to win the high jump.
Senior Anthony Pecoraro excelled in the field events and heaved the javelin 131 feet to win the event in yet another Blue Devil sweep. Junior Josh Ray took second at 101 feet and Augenstein was third with a toss of 99 feet. Although placing second, Pecoraro had a very good throw of 124 feet in the discus and his shove of 33' 7" was good enough for third in the shot put.

Results of Summit Relays Track and Field:
Ray rose 10 feet to seize first in the pole vault and Scott Kenny at 9' 6" and Tim Kelman at 8' 6" completed the sweep.
Senior Pete Anzelone blazed across the finish line in 52 seconds to take first in the 400-meters and Jim Daly won the 1,600-meters with a time of 5:00.2 and teammate Josh Bengal crossed third at 5:16.2. Matt Borchin placed second in the 3,200-meter event with a time of 10:57 and Daly was third at 11:48.
"We were missing a few runners but this will give us a chance to find
out what the kids can do in a high pressure situation," said Blue Devil Head Coach John Martin.
"For a vacation meet, it was pretty good. Overall, it was a good first dual meet. We had a decent April weather day."
Martin commented on where he felt his team did well. "I though that the 800 kids were good, the intermediate hurdles were good for the first time out and Anthony Pecoraro in the discus, threw 124 feet."
The Blue Devils competed in the Summit Relays on April 10 and their next dual meet was with the very strong Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys on April 13.

it with a time of 5:32. Cougar Kathryn Verhoeven placed second at 5:39 and teammate Jessica Lutkenhouse placed third at 5:59. Blue Devils Maura McMahon won the 800-meters in 2:30 and Tara Bhandari came in second at 2:31 followed be Verhoeven at 2:34. Rachel Ackerman won the 3,200-meters with a time of 12:31 followed by Claire Tafelski at 14:05.
The Cougars did not have their full contingent of girls and Coach Carpenter felt that it would help her team if there would have been more competitors. "They have nearly 100 girls on the team but showed up with only 25. They had La'Kel Chester who did push our girls in her events but other than that, we were running against ourselves."
Carpenter reflected on how the meet affected her team. "In terms of the younger kids, it was the starting point. That is the way I feel about it. The distance girls ran times which we expected them to run. Of course, we are looking for them to drop."
Carpenter concluded, "We are looking towards Summit when we go to the Summit Invitational."
